His dad spent two seasons at St Kilda, while his uncle is an AFL premiership player with Port Adelaide and Brownlow Medallist with Essendon.

Nasiah Wanganeen has talent running through his veins, with dad Terry Milera and uncle Gavin Wanganeen by his side.

And the rising star – one of 30 players selected in the 2021 SANFL under-18 State Talent Hub – is using his family links to help give himself the best chance of being drafted next year.

“Dad played a bit of AFL and league footy so he’s taken me for more sessions and helped me a fair bit,” Wanganeen said.

“He tells me what it takes to become an AFL player and helps me with all the technical stuff that goes on in footy and the hard work that needs to be put in to get there.

“Mum’s brother is Gavin, so he’s my uncle.


“I’m real close with his (Gavin’s) son, Tex, and whenever I catch up with Tex and see uncle Gavin, he gives us tips on what it takes.”

The 17-year-old midfielder’s silky skills were on show when he lined up with team Grundy in the SA All-Stars game in October.




During that game, he showed speed, almost took the mark of the night in the second quarter and soccered a close-range goal in the last term.

Wanganeen, who this year featured in Glenelg’s under-18 side, had also been part of Port Adelaide’s Aboriginal Academy and the Crows’ Next Generation Academy.

He said being surrounded by professional players for the past few years had also helped fast track his development.

“It was a goal of mine to make the talent hub squad, so I trained harder than I normally did, and trained on more days to improve my fitness and skills,” Wanganeen, a Seaview High School student, said.

“Playing in the under-18s was a big jump from playing in the under-16s as I was playing alongside and against blokes who were aiming to be drafted this year.

“But I learnt a lot.

“Being in the academies has been a good experience and it’s been great to be surrounded by professionals, past and present players, who have passed down a bit of their knowledge to me”

The SANFL announced the players selected for the state under-18 and under-17 talent hubs earlier this month.

The academy is aimed at giving the state’s most talented youngsters a chance to participate in an elite high-performance program, which kicked off this week with a four-day training camp at Thebarton Oval.

Braden Andrews

Club: Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 189cm, 83kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: The Chargers are set to have another early draft prospect with Andrews among their crop of top talents for 2021. The tall midfielder is classy with the ball and possesses a great step that can help him cut through opponents at the stoppages. At Under 16 level, he was used in a number of roles and showed his composure with ball in hand.



Samuel Banks

Club: Tasmania/Allies

Position: Defender

Size: 186cm, 72kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Banks is the best prospect out of Tasmania after impressing over the past 24 months. His work across half-back was on show in the Under 16 carnival, where he also impacted games further up on the wing. Clarence pushed Banks into the senior team, where he didn’t show any signs of weakness against senior bodies.



Rhett Bazzo

Club: Swan Districts/Western Australia

Position: Key Defender

Size: 194cm, 74kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Bazzo turns 18 in October, with clubs hoping there’s plenty of development left in the tall. His intercept marking is exceptional and he will be one of the first few West Australians called out on draft night.



Cooper Beecken

Club: Glenelg/South Australia

Position: Defender

Size: 188cm, 72kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Beecken is one of the more exciting prospects in the draft pool, given his ability in the defensive half of the ground. He is a rangy defender who knows when to intercept and impact. His pinpoint left foot pass makes him a player you want to have the ball in his hands going forward.



Jase Burgoyne

Club: Woodville-West Torrens/South Australia

Position: Midfielder

Size: 184cm, 69kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Port Adelaide has first access to the son of club great Peter. Burgoyne averaged 28 disposals at SANFL Under 18 level last season playing across half-back and through the midfield. He was ranked second for disposals in the competition, with only ball magnet and 2020 Kangaroos draftee Tom Powell ahead of him.



Campbell Chesser

Club: Sandringham Dragons/Vic Country

Position: Defender

Size: 185cm, 78kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: The dashing defender has speed to burn and can break the lines coming out of the backline. Chesser’s rebounding work is his clear strength, but the 17-year-old is likely to move into the midfield for extended periods in 2021.



Nick Daicos

Club: Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 182cm, 71kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: There’s almost no doubt Daicos will be an early selection this year, with the Collingwood father-son prospect in the mix for the coveted No. 1 selection. He has shown his wares across the flanks at certain periods for various teams, but looms as a midfielder in the future. Even when Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson were strutting their stuff at Carey Grammar, Daicos’ name continued to be spoken about as recruiters watched the top talent in the APS school boys competition.



Arlo Draper

Club: South Adelaide/South Australia

Position: Midfielder

Size: 185cm, 71kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Draper is one of the talented South Australians who are likely to be considered with picks at the pointy end of the draft. His form in the SANFL Under 18 competition last season was strong, winning plenty of the ball for the Panthers. In Round 9, he collected 21 contested possessions and 11 clearances. He can push forward too, as indicated by his four-goal haul in a semi-final.



Neil Erasmus

Club: Subiaco/Western Australia

Position: Forward

Size: 187cm, 79kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Erasmus is one to watch given he had limited exposure in Western Australia last year. He slotted four goals in the WAFL Colts grand final, showcasing some classy skills in the attacking half of the ground.



Ben Hobbs

Club: GWV Rebels/Vic Country

Position: Midfielder

Size: 182cm, 76kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: The inside midfielder is the player who wins the ball in the coalface and gives his all for the team. His clearance work is impressive and he shows composure with the ball, rather than thumping it forward out of stoppages.



Jason Horne

Club: South Adelaide/South Australia

Position: Forward/Midfielder

Size: 182cm, 75kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: The 17-year-old is the early favourite for the No. 1 selection given his stunning feats throughout 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The forward-midfielder pushed into the South Adelaide senior side and didn’t show any signs of intimidation. Horne has a strong leap and isn’t afraid to tuck the ball under his arm and dash towards goal. Horne took out South Australia’s MVP at the Under 16 Championships.



Matthew Johnson

Club: Subiaco/Western Australia

Position: Midfielder

Size: 192cm, 80kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Johnson is one of the taller midfielders likely to feature heavily in 2021. He dominated the WAFL Colts grand final with 22 disposals, 10 contested possessions and five clearances. He is a tough midfielder who works well in traffic and doesn’t get flustered under pressure.



Alex Lukic

Club: Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Key Forward

Size: 195cm, 86kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: With a lack of tall players in the draft pool, Lukic might be one of the top picks in the national draft later this year. He booted nine goals in three outings for Vic Metro in the Under 16 Championships in 2019, including a five-goal haul against Western Australia. Lukic marks well on the lead and is clean below his knees.



Charlie Molan

Club: GWV Rebels/Vic Country

Position: Midfielder

Size: 186cm, 78kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: The 18-year-old has played several roles for the Rebels, but seems likely to mould into a midfielder at the next level. He wins most of his ball on the outside and is usually clean by foot. Charlie is the brother of Richmond AFLW player Sophie Molan.



Cooper Murley

Club: Norwood

Position: Midfielder

Size: 177cm, 66kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Murley made the All-Australian side back in 2019 after a starring carnival. The pandemic couldn’t stop him last year as he dominated for Norwood in the SANFL, winning the club’s Under 18 best and fairest. He averaged 26.6 disposals throughout the year, zipping out of the middle and disposing of it well off either boot.



Josh Rachele

Club: Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country

Position: Midfielder

Size: 179cm, 77kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Rachele’s standout 2019 campaign resulted in him winning the Kevin Sheehan Medal as the best player at the Under 16 Championships. His burst and power coming out of stoppages was a key trait many clubs noticed. He screams X-Factor and is looming like a potential first-round selection.



Matthew Roberts

Club: South Adelaide/South Australia

Position: Midfielder

Size: 183cm, 78kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Roberts is a pure mid who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and win the ball at the stoppages. He racks up plenty of disposals and is generally a strong user of the ball on his left side. He showed he can push forward, booting 12 goals in seven matches in 2020.



Josh Sinn

Club: Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 186cm, 72kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: Sinn is one of the better Victorian draft prospects and will have a full season of NAB League football, given his schooling at Xavier College has come to an end. He is a classy prospect who links up well on the outside and has a strong dash of speed.



Tyler Sonsie

Club: Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 181cm, 73kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: The Vic Metro midfielder won the side’s MVP at the Under 16 Championships after a mightily impressive carnival. He has a strong footy IQ and just knows where to run to win the ball. He is a player who makes things happen and is in the best players more often than not.



Jacob Van Rooyen

Club: Claremont/Western Australia

Position: Key Forward

Size: 194cm, 88kg

Foxfooty.com.au says: In a midfield-heavy draft, Van Rooyen is one of the better talls that clubs will be jostling over. At WAFL colts level in 2020, the 17-year-old slotted 19 goals from 10 matches. His marking close to goal is strong – he’s rated elite for contested marks – and he is a nice shot for goal.

Been to a couple of Glenelg junior matches last few weeks, really like the look of Hugh Stagg; looks like an AFL foorballer already. Lewis Raysin has great skills as well.

Nas Wanganeen is playing reserves for Glenelg, isnt dominating (yet) but some of the things he does are very smooth/clever
