PORT Adelaide and West Coast both have interest in out-of-contract Western Bulldogs midfielder Riley Garcia.
The 23-year-old is yet to secure an extension at the Whitten Oval, but a handful of rivals across the country are monitoring the West Australian.
Garcia has played nine senior games this year around seven VFL games, overcoming the injury issues that limited him across the past few years.
Opportunities have been hard to secure in the Bulldogs' midfield, despite dominant form in the VFL.
Garcia collected 34 disposals, 17 tackles, 10 clearances and two goals against a strong Carlton reserves side on Sunday after being the unused sub the day before and has averaged 32 disposals and eight clearances for Footscray this year.
The Swan Districts product collected 23 touches and 11 contested possessions in his most recent AFL appearance against Brisbane in round 13, but was squeezed out of the 23.
Garcia was selected with pick No.62 in the 2019 AFL Draft, months after rupturing his ACL in the final game of Western Australia's under-18 championship, ruling him out of most of his debut season. – Josh Gabelich

If we want a small forward, we should draft Kako. He's better than Croft was in his draft year, and has all the traits to be successful at senior level.
I'd like to see Arty trialled in defence to see if he can fill the JJ role. Has the pace and creative kicking, just hasn't got the production from what we've seen. But I'm skeptical as to whether he ever makes it as a small forward given how much he's stagnated. Might as well try before we delist. For that reason, drafting a small forward like Kako seems even more logical
From all accounts he's going early and if the rule changes happen Essendon can match it. I like the suggestion based on what I have read though.
Unrestricted Free agents: Taylor Duryea, Jason Johannisen, Lachie McNeil
Restricted free agent: Tim English
Non-Free Agents: Bailey Smith, Charlie Clarke, Buku Khamis, Dominic Bedendo, Lachie McNeil, Riley Garcia, Alex Keath, Kelsey Rypstra
Big names have dominated this list all season, with all in footy expecting Bailey Smith to depart. Tim English appears more likely to stay but hasn?t shown any movement on a new deal yet. Most others on the Dogs list are likely to stand pat until late in the year, including veterans Taylor Duryea and Alex Keath. Jason Johannisen?s calf has hurt his chances of pushing his case. Buku Khamis fielded interest last year, does that come again? Riley Garcia is one player who has been tearing it up in the VFL for years and could find more opportunity elsewhere.
Jason Johannisen
UFA Age: 31 Games: 196 2024: 9
The Norm Smith medallist may not get back from a calf injury in time to play this year. Interesting call coming given his age.
Verdict: In the air
Taylor Duryea
UFA Age: 33 Games: 207 2024: 15
Playing on another one-year deal, Duryea continues to be picked week after week. No reason why he shouldn?t get another deal.
Verdict: Signing on
Bailey Smith
Age: 23 Games: 103 2024: 0
The footy world expects Smith to move on from the Dogs, with Geelong and Hawthorn seen as frontrunners. Hasn?t played yet this year due to a knee injury.
Verdict: Going
Tim English
RFA Age: 26 Games: 125 2024: 17
No rush from the English camp to re-sign with the Dogs, amid interest from West Coast. Hasn?t performed to the level of his 2023 season this year. Seems most likely to stay.
Verdict: Holding fire
Riley Garcia
Age: 23 Games: 27 2024: 8
Averaging 31.7 disposals and 137 ranking points in the VFL this year, numbers that suggest he is too good to be playing twos. No steps forward on a new deal yet and will surely have interest elsewhere.
Verdict: In the air
Dominic Bedendo
Age: 22 Games: 2 2024: 0
Landed a one-year deal late last year but still hasn?t played an AFL game since 2022. Likely to be moved on.
Verdict: Going
Alex Keath
Age: 32 Games: 109 2024: 5
Has been a stop-start year for the veteran tall defender due to knee and hamstring issues. The Dogs have plenty of tall cover in defence now, so he might have fallen down the pecking order. Decision to come at the end of the year.
Verdict: Holding fire
Charlie Clarke Age: 20 Games: 1 2024: 1
Played one game in the seniors back in round 8 but hasn?t been seen since. Hasn?t lit the world on fire in the VFL either.
Verdict: In the air
Lachie McNeil
UFA Age: 22 Games: 47 2024: 5
Worked his way back into the side recently and needs a big finish to the year to stick around.
Verdict: In the air
Buku Khamis
Age: 24 Games: 22 2024: 12
Turned down some interest elsewhere to stick with the Dogs last year. Been in and out of the side so a big finish to the year coming.
Could Josh Barnes actually get off the fence and provide an actual verdict?
Right! The article should be titled ‘for the most part, I don’t know’.

And what's the difference between in the air and holding fire?
To be confirmed.
