    2024 List Management Thread

    Picks at this early stage:

    2nd pick tied to Dogs
    3rd pick tied to GCS

    Players OOC:

    Big names:

    Jamarra Ugle-Hagan
    Tim English (RFA)
    Bailey Smith

    Around a while now:

    Riley Garcia
    Rhylee West
    Buku Khamis

    Older types:

    Jason Johannisen (UFA)
    Tom Liberatore (UFA)
    Alex Keath

    Pups:

    Jedd Busslinger
    Charlie Clarke
    Harvey Gallagher

Possibly (or not) on the list next year:

    Taylor Duryea
    Dom Bedendo
    Lachlan McNeil

Rookie List: No mandatory elevations in 2024. Only by choice.

Likely to retire: Keath & Duryea. Need big years: Khamis & Garcia. Do we want to keep all of JUH, Tim & Baz if they are all stupid offers to contend with?

I think we aversge 6-7 changes a year, so it will be a quieter year or maybe a couple of trades after only Sweet wanting out this off season.

I love your work BT but can you wait for the corpse of 2023 to get cold first??

    My head hurts already!

      Re: 2024 List Management Thread

So I’m thinking next year, assuming no mass exodus of players, might just be some tidy up work.

Main listers needing good years: Bedendo, Khamis, Garcia
      Main list retirement/s: Keath
Trades: Hopefully we re-sign our big names. But we’d expect at least one request from someone at some level of skill
Rookie listers needing good years: McNeil
      Rookie list retirement/s: Duryea

I could see maybe 5 main list it’s and just 1-2 rookie list spots. If it’s just the 5 vacancies then maybe/hopefully a good free agent and maybe a trade and three picks. Open up another rookie list spot for another MSD pick via Doc and make a call on McNeil. We don’t need to elevate any other rookies. If we don’t want to draft really late, we could elevate JOD a year early.

I think we’ve done a lot of heavy lifting the last two years that we should be fine tuning the list in 2024.

I really don't think it's a great move to not have a 3rd experienced ruckman on our list. English being supported Lobb and backed up by Darcy who I still don't think is ready is a poor plan. Lachy Smith is going to take some time.

I disagree, I think it's a risk worth taking. An experienced backup would only play if we had a few rucks go down at once, even if that happened it would probably only be a game or 2. Odds are it would be a wasted list spot. At least Smith will be developing.

I could have accepted someone like Teakle who has some experience but with some development left, however the club opted for Smith so let's hope he isn't required in 2024.

Yeah I agree - wasting 4+ spots on one position when, realistically, only 1 can play in the 22 is overkill.

A gentle reminder (with respect to the conversation in the previous couple of posts)...there were games in the twos a few years ago now where Gardner played in the ruck role for periods of games. Given we see players like JOD and Buss hopefully moving ahead of Gardy in 2024, maybe he resurrects those skills this year to add additional ruck coverage (if needed). Just thinking out loud....

I can also recall Gardner getting injured in the ruck in his first or 2nd game.
I don't have a lot of faith that Lobb could be a 4 quarter ruckman for an extended period.

And don’t forget Buku in the VFL ruck.

A mature age ruck could do worse than sign on at Footscray with a view to a mid season spot if the cards fell that way
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Agree , its one spot which we may need a genuine ready made backup. If English is out for a few weeks we could be relying on a few part timers to ruck thats not including Lobb.

On the contrary likely to be competing with Darcy and Smith a fair amount of the time. May be worth finding a club where you can be a clear number one and get picked up by clubs as the best ruck available playing proper minutes every week.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

                          Agree with this.

I am hoping Darcy is playing senior footy, but Smith is certainly playing ruck at Footscray and should be prioritised over any potential State League player.

We also have a few additional talls to fit in.

They don't need to be at Footscray for us to select mid season.

I’m comfortable enough with both Lobb and/or Darcy taking over main rucking duties, and also not using a list spot for a contingency to circumstances where three seperate players get injured. You have to assume that something will go right (or at least not horribly wrong) sometimes.

I think we lose 1 big namer out of the 3, and i'd be shocked if that was Mara. I think we're an 80% chance of losing baz, 50% of Chilli and <20% for Mara.

I also think that the performance of Sanders this year might also play a role in whether we fight hard to keep Baz around or not. If he can come straight into the side and perform from the early stages of the season (similar to Baz when he entered the league), then we may take what we can get via free agency and attempt to turn that into a replacement young mid who can also impact early.

There's a heck of a lot of water to go under the bridge regarding our big 3, and team performance is going to be a huge factor. Fingers crossed we go deep into September and retain all 3 for the want of success rather than money.
