Reckon it's a big ask to pick up a small forward mid-season with any expectation of them having an immediate impact. The position's too complicated and team specific, while the running is off the charts at senior AFL level. Feel we're better off putting time into developing quality in that area over a full preseason and more.
Outside of Essendon losing a batch of players and needing to find a couple a couple of quick fixes most clubs appear to use the MSD as a way trying to get a bit of a jump start on that years National Draft.
I suspect that is exactly what we have done. Sellwood might get a game or two because he's a bit more advanced but a more realistic view is that we just get a good look at him at Footscray.
Walker is probably not in contention for a senior game this year but we get him in early and help set-up him up for next year.

Currently we don't have a 3rd or 4th round pick at this years National Draft so bringing in Sellwood and Walker effectively helps fill those spots for us.

I don't believe we have drafted to fill any short term objectives or needs so it's going to be worth watching Footscray over the next few weeks to see hos the boys settle in.
I wonder if Walker is used as a forward at Footscray despite being labelled as a defender.

Thanks for that, it'd be nice if he was ready for consideration after a couple/ a few weeks and shown he's any good.

Also FWIW our best 3 NGA/FS picks this year are Hicks, an explosive small forward, Williams a classy HBF and Darcy a key defender. All will get drafted IMO, but unfortunately Williams is also linked to Hawks as FS - I’m hopeful he may choose us though, usually the academy prospects do. Perfect mix for what we still need on the list.

Bring in Butters and those 3…. Damn that’d be a hell of an offseason.

Sellwood reminds me of Bergman, hopefully he fills the role adequately and we don’t need to throw around the crazy dollars being spoken about and can save ourselves for the real big midfield piece

He looks very keen to throw himself into contests defensively, I wonder how he is at locking down on a forward

Also good call on the small forward part - you’re right, haven’t really thought of that before but it would be an absolute whirlwind trying to learn the running patterns of the team midseason. Think HBF is one of the very few positions you could realistically pick up team specifics pretty quickly

Still reckon it's a big ask for immediate impact.

Very happy with these pick ups, Selwood in particular - I honestly think he’ll play this year he looks ready to go, body’s already ready and there’s a spot for him. Really like the look of him, competitive, strong in the air and a nice long kick. If he can come in and play a role in the backline in and start to take over from Doc we’re laughing.

Really wanted McKinlay with the second which was a shame but Walker looks good too, don’t know much about him but definitely fits a need and I like going early on a 19yo - feel we have overlooked this avenue in past years, it’s a bit of a free hit, especially after a strong draft last year.

As others above have said we have Dolan & Hynes coming through in the front half, and the backline is aging. Walker, Selwood along with Jacques & Buss who I both really rate - hopefully goes a long way to building some youth coming through in a line that can trouble us at times. With Sellwood and Jacques looking bit more utility and aerial threats, now I just want a real speedster next to come through under Jj.

In the front half would still love a high quality small forward this year, preferably a classy finisher/crumber type.

I think they nailed the MSD.
With Weightman back next year, Dolan and Hynes coming through, the greater need was HB and intercepting, Sellwood first was spot on.
If Mccinlay was available, then would have suited the 2nd pick to, however, you don't always get what you want, and grabbing another intercepting type, at 19, who would have likely have gone 30-40 in this years draft, smart shopping.

Yeh I reckon they know longer term we’re set up forward with Weightman, West, Hynes, Dolan etc. This shores up our backline for life beyond JJ and Duryea

So not only have we gone hard on defenders, we've targeted two defenders that seem to be known primarily as intercepters. One medium (186cm) and the other tall (194cm)

We must have decided it was better to get Sellwood. Linked with a larger number of small forwards so obviously knew Mackinlay would not last.

Edit: nevermind we took another defender, welcome Zac
