Unless some of the more marginal players turn it around in 25 it seems like we are headed for a bigger clean out of players next year so getting the balance right now is the right thing to do. While we could have made the hard call on JJ, his form has been good enough and it's not like he's lost his run but it's more of a question about if he can stay fit enough next year.

I hope we don't cut too deep, can mean taking a huge hit to our depth.

We pretty much definitely will extend Treloar, Richards, O'Donnell, Bramble, VDM, Bont and Darcy. If they're interested in playing on, then Libba and LJones are chances of going on into 2026 but far from certainties.

JJ and Duryea likely retire. Leaves us with Scott, AJones, Poulter, Smith, Coffield and Baker.

Every season we see 1 or 2 trade outs or FA departures. So that could be as many as 12 changes if additional players leave, which feels like too deep of a cut at once.

No I do not think the number of delistings is a testament to our overall list management over the past few years.

You need to also take into account contract status and realistically how many players do you want to turn over in one off season.

Through trade, retirements and delistings for mine we have hit the right amount. Maybe JJ could have been one more.

If you look at the players coming out of contract at then end of 2025 I think you will see more players who could have gone this year.

Looking at the AFL site list of who has left each club, we had the equal third lowest number of delistings. Ours was 3 (equal with Dees and Lions). GWS delisted 2 and the Tigers zero.

Of the 8 that left us, three were traded for good returns. The Tigers also had 3 of 8 and GWS the most with 4 of 7.

By contrast Geelong lost 9 with 7 delisted and no trades.

I know everyone thinks Geelong are list management geniuses, but I think our list must be in better shape because our cast-offs are worth something, even going back t0 Lipinski, Cordy, Hunter and Stringer. (You can't perhaps list Dunkley as a cast-off, I suppose)

Anyway, the Cats had 7 duds to our 2. Only GWS and Tigs. had less duds than us this year.

Would be a good draft outcome. Might depend on what players we like in the draft. We might like someone in the vfl who?ll likely be a later pick anyway. 35/48 in this deep draft might be juicy once the bids have eaten some picks in front of us

So given our current selections (17, 25, 35, 48) obviously these will be moved back with FS and Academy picks being matched etc.

But should we be looking at bundling these picks for something sooner?

17 = 879
25 = 590
35 = 338
48 = 150
Total = 1,957 ... this is equivalent to 1964 (ish) or Pick 4. Given Richmond have an abundance of early picks, could we look at trading for Pick 6 (1,659) points?

(I feel like I'm taking BTs role here )

And ... If we do trade these picks, what happens with our other positions we need to fill? Obviously, we get one pick, but we need to fill at least four positions???

Richmond need to offload picks, not bring in another four this year. And since they don’t need draft points, a points trade seems highly unlikely.

As I’ve said, if we are looking improve our hand maybe an F1 & 17 for 11 & 24 off Tigers. 35 & 48 for 27 or 28 as those are likely points trade picks.

11, 24, 25 & 27/28. Four picks inside 28 is the best draft hand after Richmond. Plus two recycled players to fill out 6 spots.

That’s to me the highest possible outcome we could go for. Which would be sublime if we could pull it off.

Keath calls time on AFL career



Western Bulldogs defender Alex Keath has called time on his AFL career after 109 games across nine seasons at two clubs.

Keath began his professional sporting journey as a cricketer representing Australia at under 19s level before representing Victoria and the Melbourne Stars, among other teams.

Keath switched codes in 2015 to be drafted to Adelaide as a Category B Rookie, going on to play 30 games for the Crows.

Keath crossed to the Western Bulldogs during the 2019 trade period, playing 79 games for the red, white and blue across five seasons, including the 2021 Grand Final.

The courageous and reliable defender would often play crucial roles on some of the best forwards in the game, while also setting standards for teammates on and off the field.

Reflecting on his career, Keath said he was extremely grateful for the time he had spent at Mission Whitten Oval.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Western Bulldogs Football Club,” Keath said.

“The players, coaches, support staff and volunteers have been a pleasure to work with.

“To our fans - it’s been a privilege to represent the Bulldogs faithful over the journey. The memories will last a lifetime, thank you.”

Sam Power, GM of List Management and Recruiting at the Bulldogs, said Keath should take pride in everything he has achieved throughout his playing career.

“Alex should be extremely proud of the contributions he made to both Adelaide and Western Bulldogs football clubs,” Power said.

“He is the epitome of hard work and determination, a reliable defender who gave his all each time he ran onto the field. He’s also a much-loved and highly respected individual, not just by his teammates but also by staff across all sections of our Club.

“We thank Alex for everything he gave to the Club in his time in red, white and blue and wish him, Laura, Oliver and Ella all the best for the next stage of their lives.”

Yep, which is why I'm not overly on board with Pick 25 being a good deal for Daniel. It's a fair deal, but history is against us in finding a player at 25+.

The flip side is we?ve found very good players, including AA players, later in the draft outside the first round and to find them we need to get some ok picks to try to get them. Sometimes you need to roll the dice to some degree. 2014 was forced upon us, (Boyd aside) but McLean, Dale, Daniel, Cordy, Roarke & Biggs all played in Grand Finals. Two won AA honours. Four played over 100 games.

You just have to hope that Milesi was clearly telling Power the type of player he thinks he can get at 25 and how that is great for the club and not just salary cap savings.

For me, we need to look forward to the next go st things and this is assertive move. Just as (while I?m not happy about it) cutting Clarke was an assertive move. As would be moving on Keath seeing that Lobb has already replaced him. We aren?t really top 4 right now. But a couple more Joel Freijah type kids that come in and make us better and create a wave of talented kids that will continue to get better gets us top 4 quicker. It?s not easy letting champs go, but I like the club is chasing the next flag and not just telling us each year we expect a top 4 finish. These actions are better than those words.
