Re: Coronavirus Info & Helpful Direction

Just in case anyone apart from EW was thinking about it:

New York: The US Food and Drug Administration has issued a strong and unusual warning: “You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it.”

    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

Nick Cave holds a similar view. All hail Nick Cave.

Cave thinks little of Ivermectin, meanwhile, writing that “the evidence for its effectiveness appears speculative.” By contrast, the efficacy of the vaccine “is fact,” says Cave. “I feel I can move safely through the world with more than dog worming pills and an inflated belief in my own immune system for protection.”

In Guangdong, where I used to live for the last 3 years, they got up to 150 cases of Delta in one area. A month later it’s all out of lockdown there now. They have so many security guards, nurses and others to get ‘numbers to the ball’.
It’s possible to get to zero but it needs to be very tight in a way other countries will find hard to match.
A massive security network exists already. You can’t buy a train ticket here without an ID card and everything is monitored. Anyone who is diagnosed with COVID, they lock your door and put cameras outside your room, or tape up your door.
There are few inquiries if you stuff up as an administrator, just fired. Our school has two QR codes, we wear masks and facial recognition that measures your temperature.
I am not sure we would want to live in a society like this in Australia, but that’s how they are managing it.

Bleeding Gums Murphy from The Simpsons. He was a washed up deviant (by society's standards) with a Faberge Egg addiction which I assume is the complete opposite of you due to its ridiculousness, but I was trying to point out how full on I think the security/ surveillance is there.

I agree with you 100% it's a big price to pay, but given our trend to authoritarianism in this country we'd probably be prepared to pay it.

Ok got it Jeemak. I really enjoy the Simpsons but have missed large chunks.

It’s only really bad here if you get political. Other than that it makes things run really efficiently if you are willing to trust the state. I try not to think too much about it to be honest or I get down about it.

Thank feck they can contain it here because the virus is not short of hosts….At least it’s pretty safe.

I’ll go with my Boss this week to watch us play and hoping for a big win. At least we made finals. Go Dogs.

There in lies the crux of it, right. Can you imagine how violent and ugly Saturday's shenanigans would have gotten if the same protesting was lifted from Melbourne/ Sydney and shifted to somewhere near you? Good grief.

Living in Hanoi there was always a collectivist atmosphere present, but without the authoritarian streak. They did well with the first waves, but have really struggled with the more recent waves. My colleagues and friends there are not reporting positive vibes, but I don't think any of them are pining for a more authoritarian overlay to help the cope with these outbreaks more efficiently.

I remember media reports at the start of last year about nailing doors shut in Chinese cities. It got more wondering how they get supplies/medication and etc in to the people inside. Or do they just not bother.

Nah they don’t need to nail them. The police have a red tape that is illegal to be removed.

But they do install cameras from time to time.
That’s how you control a massive population with very low paid, in many cases, semi-illiterate security force.

Someone posted on Twitter tonight. Isn’t strange how people can’t be with dying relatives, no matter how vaccinated, long the quarantine or strict the conditions, yet we can still have sports people travelling around the country.
Beginning to get very dark on some aspects of this.

Hi JM, am working at an IB school in Shanghai teaching art and design. I was in the TAFE sector in Geelong before this. Last I was in Australia was Feb 2020, doing some workshops in Portland. I bumped into Billy Picken at the Hamilton Library on that trip.

How about yourself? Where are you and hopefully you are still able to work.
