No it's on the edge of Footscray up near the Maribrynong. It's more of a fish/seafood wholesaler than a fish and chip shop.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I got really nice oysters and prawns at Conways for NYE. I don't recall the food cooked on site being especially good or bad either way when I went there a few years ago.

Was staying in Williamstown for a few days recently and tried Hobsons Bay Fish and Chips as I felt like a genuine binge. Ended up fairly happy with what they dished up, but didn't actually have chips. For the amount of food I consumed I should have felt worse.
      TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

        Hehehe.

I love a good chip binge!!! In fact given I am pretty much a carnivorous vegetarian these days chips have been on high rotation.

They have a fish and chip shop next door to the fish shop.
It's not quite as flexible - you can't buy one potato cake or dim sim (only available in lots of three).

They will grill a selection of fish (200g) and serve it with salad for $14.50 if anyone is health-conscious.

I went to the fish and chip shop next to Conways (part of the same building).

Kensington fish and chip shop is back open, and the couta is still excellent.

Someone who sort of sleepwalks into being a vegetarian. It just sort of occurred to me one day that it had been a couple of weeks since I had eaten any meet (except for fish and chips ironically) and I hadn't died or farted myself to death.

I'm going the opposite way. Heavy animal based diet (lots of meat & eggs, very low carb intake) and never felt better or stronger.

That's what I refer to as my life up until I turned 50. I loved a good piece of cooked animal and if I couldn't have that then I wanted something that came OUT of an animal, not something that grew out of the ground. But I find I'm better off having some control over what I eat these days and a vegetarian diet gives me the slow release energy that I need and ensures that I at least think about something before I eat it.

No, that is another of the intentions but it's not working. It will though, it's got to.

Re: Best Fish and Chips in Melbourne

I've got a number of fish and chip shops within about a 5 minute drive from my place and find most of them have strengths and weaknesses.
One of the closer ones does a good hamburger, sensational chips, excellent grilled fish and homemade salads but the dim sims and potato cakes are awful, not even close to the mark. I haven't had the dim sims from there for a long while now
It's also an expensive shop compared to others but given it's often busy most people must rate it

There is another very good one that doesn't make a great hamburger but the fish and salads really stands out. It's also a busy shop

There are 4 others with three of them having long term owners (family businesses) and another that has just change owners
They're are all decent options but the big failing is that a couple of them really do not try and build a rapport with their customers
A bit of chat with the customers as they wait for their meal would benefit their business.

I have probably already made the point but good chips are vital to the success of a fish and chip shop (any fast food place really) If you don't get the chips right then forget it, the rest of it is going in the bin and I'm not coming back until I see the "under new management" sign go up.

There are a lot (A LOT!!!) of kebab and hamburger places doing good plant based burgers going up in West Footscray and surrounds.

I may have mentioned it already in this thread, but the whole concept of Fish and Chips has changed dramatically. These days, many shops have pre done frozen chips delivered as well as the fish, and all they do is the deep frying. In the old days, each shop made their own chips in house.

Hard to get a good shop now, although I did enjoy Hooked in Prahran when I was living out that way.

In December, I was overseas visiting family and had a few days in London. My sister took me to her local Fish and Chip shop, and it was really good. The Poms do know how to make a good fish and chip. They mainly use Cod, and I really enjoyed it.
