Re: 2018 Tour of South Africa
What a disgraceful decision. Just goes to show how strong the court of Australian media is. If I was Smith I would walk away from Australian cricket. If that's how cowardly they are, and how little support I know I'd get from them, I'd tell them to get *!*!*!*!ed and travel the world as a mercenary. We played a team that's had 4 tampering incidents amongst them and are free and clear to play.
Cricket Australia bending over to please a media that will hate them merely for existing.Western Bulldogs: We exist to win premiershipsComment

Re: 2018 Tour of South Africa
I'm finding it very hard to settle on what the right punishment should be.
I think the actual 'crime' is only one component that needs to be weighed . The other is the ideal of fairness & integrity that the public, and historically players too have baked into the expectations of leadership of the Australian cricket team.
The standards of leadership and team behaviour have slowly started to slip in my opinion since Ponting's reign, worsened under Clarke and plummeted during Smith's tenure, culminaring in this final act of stupidity. For Warner, Smith and Bancroft to think this was a good idea gives you an idea as to the stagnant echo chamber that dressing room has become.
The penalty is harsh, and I think, rightly or wrongly is a construct of punishment for a collection of sins.
How quickly other cricketers have seemed to delight in this outcome gives us an indication of how despised our team is.
We aren't tough..we are bullies..and like most bullies it comes from weakness and an underlying lack of belief and self confidence.
We have witnessed 3 series in a row involving significant degrees of rancour, ill will, and other unsavoury incidents.
You know things are bad when Harbhajan Singh is proclaiming moral superiority.
Greg Chappell is still stained by the under arm incident...and that technically wasn't cheating.
It's just an appalling situation that should never have happened..but it did and Smith, Warner and to a lesser extent Bancroft are going to have this associated with their names forever.Comment

Re: 2018 Tour of South Africa
Captain and VC planning and plotting to bring a foreign object (sandpaper, not yellow tape as Smith and Bancroft lied about) onto the field to tamper with the ball is far worse than any of the other examples raised on this thread. I reckon the penalties are about right, and it's also right for Bancroft to get a lesser penalty as the patsy.
I wonder if Warner will go postal now and implicate everyone involved."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

Re: 2018 Tour of South Africa
Well they won't make money from 20/20 they have been sacked and can only play club cricket in Australia.
Warner has also lost his contract with LG .
No one will sponsor a cheat it's bad for the brand , they will lose all their income.Bring back the biffComment

It's not tall poppy syndrome, which is a tired and boring chiche all too easily trotted out. It is apt punishment for farking up big time and getting caught."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

One got a 1 match suspension and then made captain of his country, the other got suspended for 1 match and then for an additional 12 months, and that's about right. The punishment takes into account the systematic and pre-planned nature of what took place. Daresay that added quite a few months to the penalty."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

Re: 2018 Tour of South Africa
Why do we care what others countries have done in terms of handing out punishment to their players doing the wrong thing?
We have to gauge if the charges are valid and if we believe they are serious. In this case Smith confirmed the plot and CA have handed out the punishment. Does it really matter what SA did with Faf?Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Are we just so virtuous we feel the need to go so far beyond anything that's ever been seen before for this offence?Western Bulldogs: We exist to win premiershipsComment

Re: 2018 Tour of South Africa
Nane any captain and VC combination in world cricket that were caught planning to bring sandpaper onto the ground to deliberately scuff up the ball and they would all get massive penalties akin to what Smith and Warner have copped.
It's not tall poppy syndrome, which is a tired and boring chiche all too easily trotted out. It is apt punishment for farking up big time and getting caught.
But hey those who hate cricket will be thrilled, and many who follow cricket will turn away and find something else. Just like they're doing with AFL.Western Bulldogs: We exist to win premiershipsComment

Re: 2018 Tour of South Africa
You don't think it's relevant what the precedent has been for the same offence in all the previous incidents? Or that the punishment from the ICC had been satisfactory in all other cases? Or the fact that Australia handed out a punishment more than1000% times harsher than had ever been seen before?
Are we just so virtuous we feel the need to go so far beyond anything that's ever been seen before for this offence?
I think what we have done is too harsh but it now sets a very strong standard for our players to follow.
Would you have been happy enough with just following the ICC recommendations? Do you think that would have been a sufficient deterrent for other players?Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Re: 2018 Tour of South Africa
As a country we have taken a fair bit of pride in the notion that we pay hard but fair. Given we deviated a fair bit off this then I'd expect us to hand down a harsher penalty than other countries.

This notion that we should hold ourselves to a higher standard is absurd jingoistic hubris. How far should we take this virtue we apparently carry? Not bowl short to anyone batting below 7 so as not to appear too threatening to others? Perhaps only use bats from the 80's because the modern ones are unfair? Maybe limit the number of support staff we have in case it gives us an advantage over poorer countries?Western Bulldogs: We exist to win premiershipsComment
