The Olympics should be the pinnacle of international elite sporting competition. As funny as it was to witness, having someone like Raygun performing at the Olympics (let alone qualifying in the first place) actually make a mockery of the competition IMO. We've had inept Olympics participants in the past like the Jamaican bobsledders, Eric the Eel and Eddie the Eagle, but these athletes were at least self-aware, humble and grateful to be competing, and were absolutely striving to get the very best out of their (admittedly) limited ability in their chosen sports. Raygun was taking the piss and did not add any value whatsoever to her sport, in fact likely signing the death-knell of its participation at the Olympics (elite Breakdancing is awesome to watch and hard as hell to perfect), not to mention she did so with that intoxicating mix of arrogance, hubris, entitlement and inner city elitism to go with her complete and utter lack of talent as well as a large helping of fake victimhood.
If her entire schtick was an elaborate, self-deprecating Borat-esque joke, it would almost be forgivable.
Having nba players makes mockery of it not real people like her. She's a phd by the way and lecturer at Macquarie University and is Australias best female break dancer.
Having break dancing in the Olympics on the other hand, now I could hard agree that's questionable!

Admittedly, I don?t know the ins and outs of the judging and Olympic selection path for Australian female breakdancing but I have my doubts that she is the best break dancer we have in this country.
Some people are better off staying in the classroom.
Good on her though, she?ll become rich doing highly paid speaking gigs on a whole range of interesting topics.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

Hahaaa love it. She is apparently. She won the Oceanic qualifiers.
I think maybe the routine she chose didn't work rather than her ability lacking. She's not the best clearly but can dance if you watch other performances.

The qualification process sounds a bit odd (show up and get a score at some events and you're top 15 or so) and maybe that needs some review but she did qualify so not her fault I guess

I always respect the hustle, but I'd much rather hear about the amazing gold medal performance from the 14yo skateboarder, or the BMX gold medallist who overcame a serious injury (which also ended her brother's career) to triumph.
There are so many more worthy storylines than Raygun, but I get that's not how the world works in 2024. It's basically the Hawk Tuah story of the Olympics, and about as overexposed and uninteresting.

It?s a shame the young Aussie b-boy who also competed isn?t getting any love at all, he was actually awesome and world class.

It's not like she wanted all this negative attention.
If you've got a beef with anyone have it with the selectors / qualifying process or the IOC for allowing it in the games at all.

The best part of the Olympics has been Roy & HG’s podcast.
They said the 14yo skateboarder has dreamed of Olympic glory her whole life.
I actually know Raygun. I lectured at Macquarie uni from 2010-2014. One of her phd mates was tutoring for me, so we used to have beers together all the time.
She was breaking back then and was pretty good. She wrote on the ‘sportification’ of the scene not too long ago, so i think she’s alive to the weirdness of the sport even being in the Olympics at all. She was oceanic champion in 2023 too, so I don’t doubt she’s good.
I don’t know what the hell happened to her in that comp. She was likely too old and I know from personal experience that being an academic leaves you with some heavy anxiety that isn’t really a good match for the limelight of competition. I also wonder if anyone should turn their hobby into an academic career - and whether it’s possible to keep the hobby up once you get into academic work.
Anyway whatever else she is/was, I don’t think you can fault her drive and passion for breaking.

We've all had a laugh at the memes but in all seriousness hope it hasn't been too difficult for her.
I'd get a massive olympic tattoo if I was her!
