I think if he makes contact with the ball it should be play on, but I am happy with the penalty. The big downer is that I think Spain v Netherlands would have been a better game.
Perhaps technically it was the correct decision but it is not conclusive and there is an element of doubt hence why the referee did not take any action. It was only after the VAR ref intervened that it was deemed a penalty. This type of decision should not be adjudicated by the VAR unless it is requested by the on-field referee. Your analogy with the sliding tackle is a completely different scenario- that is a situation where it is a clear foul. This wasn’t and should have been play on.

If the VAR looks at every incident in the penalty box and over rules the on-field ref then they should over rule every wrong call including adjudicating on corners and goal kicks. It should be one or the other. Ridiculous that a game is decided that way.

      Agree 100%.

Just for example. How many shirt pulls are there in the box that don't get called? Every single corner at a minimum. If VAR examined each of those, there would be endless penalities.

My point was a studs first challenge that only collects an opponent (misses the ball) should be a foul.

It is clear cut when the challenge is on the ground, but the only grey here is that we just don't see many like this and the only real way to make a play on that ball in the air is by going studs first.

So point 1: IMO it should have been a foul, they pay a lot softer and stuff with way less contact around the ground. So therefore it should be a penalty.

Point 2: Re: VAR- Like our painful AFL video adjudications, VAR is still trying to work itself out. The ball sensors and updated hawk-eye style system/graphics have made a world of difference with the offside, but it feels like they haven't fully worked out the penalty box yet.

I think this is the type of incident you want flagged by the video referee. They have actually been doing this for ages- but just letting the play roll and calling it back an eternity later in some cases.

Do we want every shirt pull scrutinised? Not sure about that. But then again- it would quickly get rid of it. I've played over 30 years of soccer and a lions share of that as a defender- pulling shirts has NEVER been a part of my repertoire.

I know I am in the minority on this (judging by the majority of media in the aftermath) but as an unbiased observer I am pretty comfortable with my view on it but more than happy for people to disagree.

These grey areas are good for discussion.
It was a 50/50 and a guy who is a professional decision maker made a call and I'm happy to go with it.

Either way someone would be upset.

If Gareth Southgate leads England to victory tomorrow morning who of he and his team versus Ben Stokes and his team will be remembered more fondly by the English public over time?

I woke up for the final this morning at 5am, had a quiet night just for the occasion. It took me a few minutes to realise my mistake and own it, rather than blame it on Optus........or the European football bodies in commencing the game a day late.
            TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

I know I'm a NUFC idiot but they needed Gordon down the left in the last ten minutes to try and level the game.

Just something down the left FFS.

Thoroughly deserved by Spain. Didn't need Pens to get to the final. Won every game. Had the much tougher road to the final.

                    Throughout the tournament they defeated.

                    Croatia (World Cup Semi-Finalist)
                    Italy (reinging Euro champions)
                    Germany (on their home soil)
                    France (World Cup Finalists)
England (back to back Euro Finalists)

Massive gap to all the other teams in technical ability and especialy their ability to keep possesion, work the ball in tight space and create chances even when teams sit back and park the bus. England were outplayed for most of the final and were lucky to be only 1 nil down when they equalised from a fantastic counter attack. However, it was again Spain with a well worked goal that involved multiple passes and a beautiful through ball to win it for Spain.

Three of the last five Euro trophies in the Spanish cabinent now.

You're right. It was criminal from Southgate not playing Gordon. Such a dour manager hopefully they get a manager who unlocks their potential because on paper they have an incredible side. (except pickford).
They did a great job getting to the final tbh they never hit any great heights.

Chef your boy did well. He's a star.

Spanish, wow 7 out of 7. Rodri coming off at half time I though hmm that could be trouble. Nico Williams bang.

Two toon old boys coming on late. Merino and Toney! Perez on the bench with Gordon and Trippier.

Felt for Trips, Shaw was ok early but don't think he really caused a threat with his crosses.

Yeah, Cole Palmer is something special. He really should be starting over Bellingham.

Cucurella with another fantastic game defensively too then setting up the winner. What a turn around for his career.

Cucurella was great. He was the best of the full backs/wing backs.

Well done to Spain. They have had a great day winning the Euros and Alcarez winning Wimbledon.

It is not coming home once again for England.

Yes that's right. Huge win for Real Madrid in that Champions League final. When Real Madrid make a Champions League final they almost always win it.
