    Australia vs England

How does this side look for the first test?

Rogers, Warner, Watson, Clarke, Smith, Bailey, Haddin, Johnson, Siddle, Harris, Lyon

Would Bailey be a lucky man given his shield average isn't good enough?

    Boy that's a piss we*k team.

But yes, probably the best we can muster. Looooooong summer ahead.

Problem of course is that they have concentrated on Mickey Mouse cricket since England.

Bailey has done as much to earn a spot as anyone playing Ryobi Cup. At least he remains cool under pressure.

If Clarke doesn't come up with his back issues, Bailey could even make his Test debut as captain.

Bailey not picked for Australia A - so either a shoe in or will be overlooked.

Only Glenn Maxwell from the India One Day tour is included. I wouldn't read too much into that.

If the pitches are all roads we have no hope. If it becomes a bit of a war of attrition we are right in it. Too much relies on Johnson now with our injuries and I am not convinced.

I generally take nothing out of ODI form and less so when they are played in the sub continent but Bailey will come right in to calculations. He does need some 4 day runs but you get the feeling the selectors are more inclined to go off gut feel recently. He seems to have the temperament for it.

                Sorry for the double post.

I think we'll struggle to make runs with that line up but what's the alternative? I can see Warner, Watson, Bailey and Smith all getting knocked over very cheaply. Strong defences are not the forte of any of the above and I have not seen one of those listed consistently put a price on their wicket.

Massively underrating Smith, came out of the Ashes with his reputation enhanced ten fold, has the temperament for the fight and a much improved technique. Warner and Watson will be okay on hard, bouncy tracks with less sideways movement. I have technique concerns around Bailey especially around the off peg but might not be exposed as much as we fear at 6

I thought we had a lot of young pacemen coming through. Guys like Hazelwood, Pattinson, Cummins etc. Are they all injured or so out of form that Johnson's back in the mix?

Totally agree. It's easy to look at Smith and knock him because of the way he was initially brought into the team but if you can move past the initial perception it's clear he's been one of our best batsmen from the India series on and has even managed a few handy spells with the ball.

Looks like Clarke is pushing for the inclusion of Bailey, so maybe he is a shoe in.

Pattinson, Cummins, Starc and Bird all injured. I think Hazelwood is in the mix but Johnson is bowling the best he has for years and deserves first crack.

Not sold on Smith, suspect technique for test match cricket and is really still adapting his style. Can look very uncertain at times well into his innings and is sucked into playing bad balls too often. He's still very much middle of the road and in the team because we have no leadership depth.

Happy to be proved wrong this summer.

Bailey again doing his chances no harm with another outstanding innings.

He looks so composed at the crease and just in total command.

His first class average isn't great but it's no worse than Ed Cowan's was and he was given a chance.
