I saw that. I like it but I'm not sure how we could satisfy the saints in a trade. Would be too expensive.

The Western Bulldogs have turned their attention to Saints defender Callum Wilkie after missing out on Jack Silvagni

Isn't the idea to trade out of the top twenty and then get the player to nominate you, and then ensure there's a media campaign promoting the fact the incumbent club is being unreasonable for not giving the player away for nothing?
        TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

Even though it is a long shot, I can't love this enough. Wilkie is the closest current player to Dale Morris in the competition. He is absolutely worth a strong, robust and aggressive contract offer. I love defenders who can actually defend and put their direct opponent to sleep.

Also happy with targeting Buderick and Young - our list holes are pretty obvious and these 3 players will address our key areas of urgent reform. We do need to look at high half forwards as well - whether it be through the draft or in trades.

Don't really want Wilkie. We need a big stopper and I just don't see that at all with Wilkie who is an interceptor albeit an All Australian caliber one. We clearly are having a crack which is good but I really hope we get a true key defender not another 1 or 2 2nd or 3rd talls like we already have.

Once the player has nominated a club I understood that it was actually a violation of the Geneva Convention to not trade them there.

I'd much rather a 191cm defender who is proven over many seasons to be able to put his opponent to sleep than a project 202cm key defender who is inconsistent but has the better physical profile.

It is selling Wilkie short to say he is only an interceptor - he is a gun 1-on-1 defender who can play on talls and also the dangerous smalls. He is basically Dale Morris 2.0

Does that work for us? Or is it only for the big clubs?

The problem here is he's contracted for 2 more years.

I guess the Saints also need draft picks to get all their deals done too, so maybe he'll be sacrificed.

Tom Morris (I know) reporting we're offering $1m plus per year over 4 years.

I'd ignore it though. He's just suddenly reporting this after Twomey (one of the few respectable AFEL journos) announced we're after Wilkie. But it's probably what anyone could guess to be close to the truth.

The saints and their fans as well as the media are acting like they've one 3 flags in a row and are building a dynasty since the NWM signing and bringing in anyone who's money hungry. Even if this is next to impossible, it's a great move by us (and any other club) to ruffle the feathers down at moorabbin. There will 100% be players down there unhappy at being paid pittance compared to the newcomers. Force the salary cap squeeze on the saints. As soon as a decent player is squeezed out, their whole "destination" fantasy explodes. It's not like there's bountiful farmland on the bay. Players will move.

Yeah but they're trying to become relevant and play finals. Losing their best defender destroys that.

Imagine bringing in good-average players like TDK, Silvagni and Ryan on close to $1m contracts but losing Marshall and Wilkie (and arguable Battle).

Morris is actually a pretty conservative reporter (check his masterpiece of a tweet about Wanganeen-Milera from the morning of the day he re-signed), so if he’s running with figures they’re probably accurate.

I doubt this ends up going anywhere but maybe the Saints have a bit of push factor now that they’ve spent over a third of their cap on 5 players. Is there anything we can do to convince Marshall to stay?

I like Wilkie as a player and he can be matched against a range of opponents.
I get the sense that while we would like to add him we also realise that this is a long shot.
Effectively we are running up the Saints to offer him an improved deal.

If we have huge $$$ to throw at one marquee player, who would you prefer we throw it at? Wilkie or Butters?

For me, Butters is the better player and younger. But Wilkie fills a glaring hole. I'd still lean to Butters. We don't have a lot of midfield depth and it needs a shake-up.

Which of our interceptors are you refering to which one is better then Wilkie? .
Isnt the idea of list building is to improve your list if you have a chance , nah i can't agree with you there Aidan , Wilkie would be our best backman and im all for improving your list .
