Most of us like Buku and his versatility but should we have taken pick 41 that the Blues offered?

Yes. Hes not a best 23 player for us so that would have been a great deal.

Nope, he’s worth more on our list than a pick that we probably won’t even use at this stage.

Who plays if Darcy or Naughty go down? Who plays if Buss, JOD or Lobb goes down? We’re not exactly stacked with tall depth anymore why give him away for nothing. Carlton have courted a contracted player who we want to keep, we want to do the right thing by Buks but these offers from Carlton are a joke to be honest.

19 for Buku & 33 at a minimum to let him go = the equivalent of pick 37, ie the same pick we just gave up for an uncontracted Budarick

Pick 11 that will slide into maybe 14 in a "weak draft"? A F1 which will probably be late teens at best. A middling half forward who is a good player 18 but nothing more. And a flanker that isn't even in their best 22 and is on a big and long contract relative to his ability. And Sydney want a pick back?

They are basically sending two okish picks to upgrade an ok forward to a gun, and salary dumping another guy for a decent pick.
They're in a tight corner with Curnow just not wanting to be there.

Haywood is actually a really good player. He's only 26 so his best is yet to come.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

100%, same with the Merrett trade offer and obviously Geelongs Curnow offer too.

The media are wetting themselves over “first round picks” but fact is things have completely changed. The difference between a genuine top 5 or 10 pick (on the night, not one that goes out to 15!) and a late first rounder is crazy now. A competing teams first round pick is now basically garbage, literally 25 onwards. Getting Swans, Hawks or Geelongs future 1st? Genuinely steaknives

Look Blues probably take it, personally I think their list is shit and they’re in rebuild territory and a 30yo injury prone Curnow who wants to leave is a smart trade. But no way you give back 22, which would take it from a decent pick to just a pick upgrade which makes it a terrible deal really

The points you make are valid to the types of players we’ve been playing for little/ no return…. but we’ve hit the draft with a targeted approach over the past couple of years and I fully expect the likes of Dolan, Hynes, Jacques and Sellwood join Freijah, Jones & Croft become more permanent members of our team over the coming years… that’s (hopefully) where the improvement comes from.

I have faith that JOD and Buss become better players next year too… they both need massive preseasons in the gym, but I’m happy to back in ‘our’ players if we can’t bring in A grade talent.
Yeah look I don’t think we’ve been sitting on our hands I’m sure we’ve been working on things, but fact of the matter is this isn’t just a single offseason thing - we’ve had these issues for multiple offseasons and we just have not fixed them or even really made an effort.

We had the Wilkie Hail Mary but even that was a last minute opportunistic play, clubs are putting this work into our players 2 years out - are we doing that? I’d hope we are, or is Bevo still too proud to meet an opposition player in contract mid year?

I like the young talent on our list too, & obviously the top end - but that’s even more reason to go hard to fill gaps right now. We’ve got a mountain of cap space and all we need to do is pick up B graders but doesn’t even seem like we’re in the market for most of the ones moving which is just frustrating. These are the types of guys our club should be able to reel in.

Also yes we’re targeting the draft but don’t we owe it to the best player in our clubs history to have a real crack whilst he’s here? Theres only so many times we can rebuild the list with him still in his prime - every time we look ready to contend all of a sudden we’re back to hitting the draft and playing the kids. Why? We have probably 3-4 max years of Bont at his best, possibly less who knows. This is the time to put it all on the line for a premiership.

I also like JOD & Buss and have been one of Buss’ biggest supporters on here but does Bevo? I mean he wasted the perfect opportunity to get games into him earlier this season, subbed him on any occasion possible and now all of a sudden our list manager is extremely confident in his future. Well someone tell Bevo that because there seems like a big disconnect there

I trust Liam Pickering is going to be equally critical of Brisbane for asking for a higher pick for Ah Chee as he was when we held out with Josh Dunkley.

The circumstances are pretty similar other than Dunkley is a superior player. Pickering was fairly vocal that Sam Power was being ridiculous dragging it late into the period.

Maybe, but I think he gets to Carlton, and I reckon we get a favourable pick swap our way

They gave 41 for Chesser who was almost delisted.

Buku may not be best 22 but he still played 14 games this year. I think we did the right thing asking for more. It was mentioned somewhere that we were looking at pick slides, which seems smart given they just need points.

Just heard that no trades will happen till after 2 pm. Of course, the wheeling and dealing continues, but lodging the paperwork will happen after 2pm

It'll all happen at 7.30pm so it can be televised. Completely manufactured like nearly everything else in the AFEL.

The mooted Curnow trade is pretty risky for Sydney IMO. They are giving up a lot of established senior depth with Heywood and Florent in addition to the 2x first round picks to regenerate the list, and they don't exactly have enormous reserves of quality youth coming through. I know Florent was on the nose this year, but he and Heywood have both been mainstays and clearly above-average AFEL level players in that team for a number of years (especially Heywood). They are bringing in a 30yo roaming forward who doesn't love being the big dog and who has had a history of serious injuries - he's a massive talent and I get the appeal, but he's fragile both physically and mentally (he was really poor in the 2023 finals series) and that isn't going to improve beyond 30yo.

What does Curnow add that a Heeney can't do if he was more permanent forward? Maybe they should target an elite midfielder instead of Curnow to allow Heeney to destroy the opposition in F50. Also as insurance in case Warner goes back to Perth in a couple of years when he becomes a FA

The offer is a 1 year deal with a series of on and off field triggers for a 2nd year. It’s no more than about 250k… a fair drop from his current 900k deal. It would take something remarkable for this to fall over now." - Tom with an update on Jamarra Ugle Hagan

This bloke has cost us a lot in both draft picks and dollars this year. To get a pissy 70 or 74 is a joke - this stinks.

                                900k is a massive saving.
