Yeah...but it gives them ANOTHER top 20 pick. There will be some mids available with that selection...

Burton and Cal Ah Chee were the most talented players in that draft class - and Dunks was the best leader. Burton is still coming back from a truly horrific injury but the kid can play and sees the game better than most...I see him more as a Gunston type player than a defender...he is gonna be just fine.

Port are doing what they can in a terrible situation for them and if they can get a high end talent like Burton PLUS a solid first round pick back for a player who is:

    - Out of love with the club
    - A free-agent in 12-months (albeit restricted)

Then that is probably a good deal...is that better or worse than we got for Stringer???
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

      - Hawks deal was the same as ours minus the performance/bonus clauses. Our offer included performance metrics.
HUN reporting the Hawks deal is only $2.5 million over 4 years. I thought Chad wanted $1 million per year and we were offering more than his current deal of $800k? Something doesn't add up there.

Burton and Duryea to us and a swap of their pick 15 for our 7, to on-trade to Port.
The issue here is GWS hold pick 14 and McCartney may just bid on West to screw us over. There's more danger with downtrading a first round pick for us this year than in other years.

It seems every time a "big" club picks up a star player from another club the media rush to announce they've signed for much less than other clubs offered (e.g. Lynch, Shiel, Smith, Stringer, O'meara etc.) but when a "small" club picks up a player they've always paid overs and the other clubs pulled out because it's irresponsible to pay that much (e.g. Carlise, Boyd, Polec). It's complete horseshit, I know for a fact Essendon is paying Stringer a heap more than his contract at the Bulldogs and they outbid every other club for Smith and Saad as well purely on $$. Hawthorn will be paying Wingard more than Port were and every cent the Bulldogs would have as well.

The rumour suggests the Hawks deal had less clauses in it than we did and we had more performance incentives. That in itself is a little bit of a red flag, Wingard not backing himself in to meet the performance clauses.

Seems that we put in a lot via performance clauses and incentives. He clearly doesn't back himself in to make the most money if it needs him to work hard and be professional.

Wonder if we'll ever have publicly known salaries in the AFL like in most major US sports? All anyone is doing these days is guessing and then passing judgement based on those guesses.

Paul Marsh said he is open to having player salaries out there. I wonder if the players are?

Paul Marsh is the AFL players association CEO in case anyone is wondering and he said that today.

Baulking at an incentivised contract sounds true to form for Wingard. If true it shows there's more to this than us just missing out on a quality player...….

If I am a 25 year old, 2x AA player who has been targeted by an opposition club and they then decide to offer me a contract that is heavily incentive based, well, I would tell them to take a flying leap. So would you. If we have missed out because of this, I will be most displeased!
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I'm not that unhappy. Yes he's 2 x AA but like Stringer has had 2 sub-par years most recently. So it's not like he's a known commodity at this point. With all the crap we've been through with players like this post the flag, i'm not surprised we have erred on taking up another one.

2x sub par years? I keep hearing this and it simply isn’t true. He finished 6th in the b&f and his 2nd half of the year was sensational...he’s gone now so it doesn’t matter but let’s not kid ourselves on this point.
