    Re: LOL Aints

The question mark on Ross is if he can be part of building. developing a list. He's pretty much always come into a side that's playing finals and given them a boost to premiership contention. Their list right now isn't really a contender's list so if he can achieve top 4 this time around it's a pretty big refutation of that perceived weakness

2023 was a pretty good start - they were widely touted as a bottom 4 candidate at the start of last season.

For sure, 6th was way above what most of us could expect, but they were also one game from 9th and nowhere near top 4. I don't see them getting top 4 without developing their young players which historically they've failed to do as a club and with Lyon as coach. Would be huge if they make that next step but personally I think they slide a bit as the new coach bump continues to wear off

They just don't have the top end draft talent (King excepted) that they had during their last Lyon tilt.

Id be shocked if they make the top 4.

Lyon has all these guys covered by the length of the Flemington Straight.
They have plenty to lose, irrespective of how little they've won the past forever.

Jobs for mates, or acolytes rarely works. No problem if Ross wants to run the show, but he should be exhaustive in his approach to ensuring he's surrounded by the best talent possible, not just a bunch of people who agree with him.

Same here, they're really light in for talented players.

Rocket was our most successful coach outside of Bevo, and he was hired virtually on the spot without any process whatsoever. Sometimes the exhaustive process works, sometimes it doesn't. If you have absolute clarity of purpose and direction, you don't need to tick the boxes just because other organisations have done it. Bassat is a successful businessman and knows what he wants - it was a ballsy move to sack Ratten when he did, but he owned it with full accountability and zero apologies for making a tough call (whilst acknowledging the hurt he caused to Ratten). Clearly there's a strong rapport and chemistry between Lyon and the ex players. If it fails, so be it - they weren't going anywhere before his arrival anyway, and now they are a punchers chance.

I think that's fine if you're talking about one appointment, but not a cohort of buddies and acolytes. It has unsustainable shit show written all over it.

And I fundamentally disagree that if you've wasted some years, it doesn't make a difference if you waste a few more. That's reckless management.

I can't imagine Ross delegates alot, but I could be wrong.

No way I would want him and the Dogs.
                      His players love him.

Ross can seriously coach. Who are the Saints stars? Sinclair & Wilkie kind-of, Max King maybe, and...? (Steele was good and Marshal a rung below the best rucks). He's getting the best he can out of that list which is all you can ask of a coach. They defied expectations last year and there's every chance they're a finals side again.

Lethlean is your typical boys-club 'went to the right school lets give him a job' type who was already run out of the Crows. I'd point way more fingers at him than I would a guy who, but for a bad bounce, would be a premiership coach

I'm with you here, if you spend five years on a failed project that could have been managed with a 2020s mindset (things have changed a lot in twenty years) then that's gone from shit show to disaster film.

Look at Macrae at Collingwood, would they have been better off getting Ross and his boys club in?

You can list off the premiership coaches since Clarkson's threepeat and it's all new guys except Scott at the Cats.

Beveridge, Hardwick x3, Simpson, Goodwin, McRae.

I'd be looking at something fresh if I was the Aints. But considering I enjoy their failures I welcome what they've done.

                                Luck matters.

Zaine Cordy's knee and Buddy's rolled ankle sure helped Bevo a lot in 2016. You need to be a good enough coach to get your team in the position to get that chance first. Ross can at least do that. He's done it at two clubs so that shows it wasn't a list anomaly that got him there.
