VFL player Wade Lees cops 18-month ban for importing performance-enhancing drugs

This is an old article but just goes to show the double standards of the AFL. I cannot see how Essendon cannot be fined, its players banned for anything less than this bloke got.

Wade Lees didn't even take the bloody stuff, he was guilty of importing it and didn't even receive it as customs intercepted it. 18 months ban, very harsh. Why hasn't Watson been charged already, after all he admitted taking a banned substance.

If you don't acknowledge things it means its not happening.

Watson admits tat he believes he was given that supplement not that he actually received it. Subtle difference but it is important.

Did anyone hear the Kim Jong Evans and his speech looking down the camera and uttering " They're not performance enhancing drugs".
No, but they are banned substances!

I didnt understand the comments either. He can argue that point in his Tullamarine office while the repo men are gutting the place.

Yes I found that quite hilarious but no doubt the silly Essendon supporters are blanking out the last part

Huge news in the athletics world with a number of high profile sprinters failing drug tests overnight - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/oth...ance-drug.html

Interesting article, and some very interesting comments from those accused, whose attitudes are in sharp contrast to the Essendon players:

Simpson, 28, also took responsibility. ‘As an athlete, I know I am responsible for whatever goes into my body,’ she said. ‘I would not intentionally take an illegal substance. I am sorry for any hurt or embarrassment this positive test may have caused.’

How can Essendon players continue to shift this responsibility to others? They have 100% responsibility for whatever substance enters their body.

Because it was only banned, not performance enhancing........

But seriously Asafa Powell is in the gun and is taking responsibility while denying the claim. Essendon need only to be treated the same as anyone else, no more, no less.

You're missing the point BT. It's not about what they took, it's about the players accepting 100% responsibility for what they took (whether it was AOD's, PED's, Berocca's, I don't care really).

Pretty sure BT was extracting the urine on that one, Sedat.

I get where you ar coming from, the throw away (yes WD, it was not quite serious )line was reflective of the hair splitting Essendon are living in denial with. I.e. banned/performance enhancing, WADA/ASADA lists, but the club doctor said it was OK so as a player I don't have any responsibility, etc, etc. (there is no hair splitting!)

I completely agree with your point. I'm not sure why they are arguing ignorance on a charge of strict liability. But I don't see them taking responsibility anytime soon, or at all.

Its highly debateable whether they are performance enhancing anyway.
Even in the best case scenario they are indirectly performance enhancing.

My sarcasm radar is clearly off today

Whilst I hate the stance that Essendon has taken throughout this entire sorry saga, I really cannot forgive the AFL for their passive, rudderless display in managing this situation. Their silence has been deafening, and I hope that WADA and the Aust Govt punish senior AFL management with as much force as I hope they do to Essendon.

                              Agree, agree, agree.

Just another example of the AFL sweeping things under the rug in the hope that it goes away. If there is a national competition governed by a more morally corrupt, leaderless administration, I'd like to see it.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

Whole heatedly agree. Some sports take athletes taking banned substances very seriously, but the AFL have acted like if they ignore it, that it just might go away and not affect every other stakeholder throughout Australia including me. All I ask is that the standard treatment that applies to athletes all over the world apply to Essendon players, no more, no less. If that's 42 player bans and essentially a club ban then fine. Let the AFL intervene and allow the club to draft 40 players next draft and special compensation for the salary cap. Then watch the media get stuck into them for working around WADA just in order to look after the TV rights.
