I think we simply have to do our due diligence with payroll, like any employer. Also, definitely acknowledge treatment/therapy details are none of our business.
Definitely there is more going on than is made public and outside of being a Dogs fan I truly truly hope that he can get himself right personally. I can only go off what I know and to me it just seems like everyone is trying to help him and he doesn’t really want to make change to help
himself and until that happens I fear that he will be lost not only to the Dogs but to the AFL. I wish him nothing but the best, I’d hate if it’s at another club but if that’s what it takes for his life to get back on track so be it

I should also add employment contracts don't have to be limited to standards so perhaps AFL ones offer basically limitless mental health leave.

Person first, football second: Bains on supporting Ugle-Hagan

The CEO has reiterated the Club’s focus on supporting Jamarra Ugle-Hagan’s wellbeing.

Western Bulldogs CEO Ameet Bains has reiterated the Club’s focus on supporting Jamarra Ugle-Hagan’s wellbeing as he works through personal challenges.

Ugle-Hagan has undertaken a flexible training model since January and is not currently available for selection.

Speaking on SEN on Thursday morning, Bains said while there are a number of complexities surrounding the situation, Ugle-Hagan’s wellbeing remains paramount.

“We’re clearly dealing with a very challenging situation - we’ve got a young 23-year-old man who’s dealing with complex personal challenges, so our only concern right now is supporting him and assisting with his health and wellbeing,” Bains said.

“In doing that we’re guided by the medical professionals, and that's where the greatest intersection with the AFL exists - having the support from the AFL medical team to really assist him in a way that the Club isn’t able to give in its resource availability.
“Those conversations with the AFL have been ongoing for a very long time and within that there are different milestones, and I suppose new conversations around how we continue to support Jamarra.

“It really comes back to supporting him as best we can as a young man who’s obviously struggling with a lot of things at the moment.”

Bains said that despite external speculation there was no urgency from the Club’s perspective with regard to next steps.

“I don’t think we’re anywhere close to that point (of cutting ties) with him, and that’s not occupying any of our thoughts,” he said.

“There’s often a rush for final judgement on this, but we’ve only completed six rounds and Marra is contracted to the end of next year, so our focus is very much just on supporting him from a medical perspective and helping him get to where he needs to get to.

“We need to ensure that he’s doing absolutely everything he needs to do to help himself, and that’s part of the juggle and the challenge.

“Our focus has to be supporting him as a person. Football’s a fair way off at this point in time and not a consideration for us at all.”

The thing I took from Baines comments, is no mention of mental health. Personal, complex issues and well-being.
          This is no accident.
Mental Health, good and bad, impacts everything we do, think and believe, it is not a blanket excuse for all decisions and behaviour.
Forget the WorkCover references, he is being paid as the contract says we have to, and for the Dogs to salvage anything from this, we need to.
There is nothing occurring out of the normal expectation of his job, the be the cause of a workplace injury.

Bornadog, only quoted you as you posted the article on Baines.

Baines obviously thinks Marra's potential boost to the team is worth the current investment the club is putting in. Gotta back in the club's judgement, I guess.

                    What about JUH for Butters?

Imagine Butters (like all the rumours we have mostly been starting haha) is dead keen on getting to the dogs and tells Port as much. JUH gets out of the fishbowl and away from his "distractions" and certainly fills a need for them- plus Port have a huge indigenous cohort, including the likes of Burgoyne working at the club. Adelaide is only a short flight from family too.

Stuff of fantasies maybe. But with heavy bias I feel like this is a pretty good deal (considering he is FA in 12 months time).

It'd be easier to settle on JUH's value by draft picks only. I doubt we'll see any player for player swap in this particular situation.

Good to see you join the forum and posting.

For Jamarra it is probably more to do with whether he plays again at all.

I would take that in a heartbeat.

Not a chance that Port are accepting that deal.

We have to start realising that, even if Marra did defy expectations and come back to perform well at AFL level this year, we will be getting a poor return for him.

I'm anticipating a Stringer type trade (picks 25 + 30, which ended up being Balta and TDK) as a best case scenario, but that is if he plays this year.

If he sits out the rest of the year, we're getting even less.

Completely agree, but I'd just hold him to his contract then.

Unless we have a big fish lined up at the end of year and want the cap space, I don't see the value in trading him for nothing. Hold him to his contract - he can play and boost his value or sit out next season too and we lose him for nothing anyway.

I just don't see the value in trading Marra for nothing and strengthening a rival at the same time.

This would be the rare instance that I would do this too.

Typically you wouldn’t do it, out of wanting to act in good faith with the player and manage relationships with managers, players, perception et, but if you aren’t going to get a fair return, why make your opponents stronger on top of that. In a world where Clubs have massive limitations and players too much power in the trade system, this is a hand that could be played.
