Is it a mental health issue or is being a professional athlete just not his top priority?

Feels more attitude than anything else.
    The curse is dead.

What is your source for this? I find it difficult to believe.

Although nobody knows for sure what players are being paid he signed a 2 year deal in May last year when it was reported he was getting +10 year godfather offers from other sides. It's difficult to believe he would re-sign for half of what he was likely being offered elsewhere.

How does a present day AFL player contract work?

it’s not any fault of his employer to present to work, I’m assuming he’s claiming sick leave? (Due to mental illness) yet his actions preclude that being the case? I.e not preparing like he should.

so is he being paid his full salary? The optics of being in party town whilst getting the $ are ordinary at best.

players bang on and on about it being a workplace, which it is, but if this were in a real workplace he wouldn’t be getting paid. He’d be on work cover. And probably going through a separation with his employer.

Yeah he’s absolutely not on $600k

It’s weird though isn’t it, as you said signed early last year. What broke down so badly for him in the 2nd half of the year that this situation is nearly untenable in just a 6 month period?

If there was any issues with him wanting out then he would have taken an 8+ year deal on huge money last year when he was uncontracted or at at the very least waited until the end of the year to sign & made us sweat on it.

What went so wrong so quickly here? Its truly mindboggling

I fear that the writing is on the wall. You would think that after many months, and a lot of support from team mates, the Club and supporters, he would be further down the road to recovery. But, if what is reported is true, it seems he is not committed to getting back in the saddle in a hurry.

Seriously, I get the gravity of the situation but I think too many people are getting drawn into the medias need to constantly mention the JUH story without having any new information.

Are we so sure that things haven't progressed? That is the media line- but what concrete information is there around this? The messaging coming from Bevo/the club/players has not changed one bit- they are saying the same thing every time they are asked.

The social media thing is not a great look, but ultimately does that mean he has not taken steps forward elsewhere?

He should have gone to the game- really? I can see why a kid who has some anxiety issues with an obsessive amount of media attention not attending a special night for our club (with a huge crowd) was the right call? I tend to think if he goes along he gets the "made it about himself on the clubs special night" (given he would know the media attention it would draw). Posting to social media was dumb, but that doesn't take away from the former.

I have maintained all along that I am just gonna avoid all the noise on this- it just isn't worth committing the energy to the constant clutching at straws coming from everyone trying to find a headline. Wait till the club/his management speaks on whether he is staying going when the time comes.

Honestly feels like things have regressed. He was turning up to training every day for the last two weeks, this week he hasn't been spotted once.

One step forward, two steps back.

Marra had completed about 4 weeks of uninterrupted 'on the field' sessions that I'm aware of then he missed a couple in a row before attending again.
These last two missed sessions and of course not attending the centenary game have happened after some increased media speculation so it seems fair to link they are related.
We are on a long journey with Marra, and it's not like things will be resolved with a snap of the fingers.
The social media stuff when he's not where we would like him to be might be the kick starter but in the whole scheme of things are minor distractions.
His health and well being should be the primary focus and the good part is that a whole lot of support is in place for Marra.

Time will tell if it works or not but for supporters getting frustrated about when or if he might return shouldn't be the focus.

My biggest concern now is what do we get back for him? Hopefully a first round pick

I fear he has gone too and so has Bevo at seasons end.

Can I say Bevo's interviews show his sincerity and that he is not displaying frustration with JUH but what he reports about him are very frustration worthy.
Bevo and the club have invested years in Marra and have done their part of the deal and will continue to.
As a team this is a big loss this season and a setback for the short term future.
Marras wellbeing is paramount and the club agrees. Marra will need to address his issues with the resources available and we'll have to be patient.

I’m all for supporting and encouraging anyone who has genuine health or mental issues but frequenting pubs and social media seems to suggest he is prioritising having a good time over his contractual employment obligations. He has never been particularly invested in football, never watches games, it’s just something he’s able to do well. He could well walk away from a football career. I don’t think a change of scene would cause a big turnaround in his attitude.

My seat at Docklands is around 20 metres south of the intersection of the 50 metre arc and the boundary line at the Footscray Road end so what's in front me me is the half forward / half back line. Given the huge publicity of his recruitment, for half a game, Ugle-Hagan was an eye magnet in his second and third years. Not impressed. Moments of brilliance but no second or third efforts when these failed. No chasing, blocking, decoying, no team things. The best I hoped for was that the examples of Naughton and Weightman would kick in and he'd become a good player, he was never going to be the Franklynesque superstar. Our condemnation of his behaviour or imposing blame on the club is counter productive.

The way Bevo spoke about him on FC was excellent. We have an extremely well run club at the moment, with great leadership in the form of the coach. So I am confident they will do a better job than anyone in managing Jamarra.

Not sure if it is the case with Jamarra, but if the drive and passion to succeed at the elite level is not innate, it is very hard to instil into someone. As a person who has never had that drive for anything, and a passion that definitely does not aspire to be elite, I can sympathise with anyone else who doesn't. I just hope that, if that is the case, he finds his place in the world. Somewhere he really wants to be and happy with a lesser level of commitment.
