    2017 Draft Watch

My first hit pick of next year is Darcy Fogarty. (Glenelg) AIS academy, state u18 this year mainly as a forward. I can see him moving into the midfield. Is quite tall and attacks the ball harder than any junior I've seen for a while. To quote a senior AFL person a few months ago "he will kill someone one day".

Brad McCarthy is another strong young mid fielder who won the league 3k time trial when training started a few weeks ago. Also I'll be watching Sam Walker and Jonty Scharenberg with interest. Still staggered Walker missed out

Is the feeling around the traps that Scharenberg's awful beep result cost him a spot on a list?
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

For those of us old enough to remember the horrors of the early 80s teams, a player to watch will be Tom De Konning, who has made the AFL Academy squad and is son of cult hero Terry.

For the younger members of the forum, Terry De Konning was a 2nd Ruckman/KPP who managed 31 games (7 wins, 24 losses) for us in 1980-82. He was a local product who had a crack but whose talents were limited (in 1980 he famously played 4 games despite winning a combined total of 3 possessions and giving away 5 free kicks).

We were so crap in the 70s and 80s (85 withstanding), that in hindsight we should have gifted any Bulldogs player 100 games and therefore make their kids eligible for F/S.

Would have had a Hannebery, 2 x Reids, a Rance and now this kid.

Considering we have Libba, Wallis, Cordy and Hunter already on the list with at least 1 gun West kid on the way, it's prett crazy to think how many former Bulldogs have had sons that are AFL standard. Surely our club is a clear #1.

Dunno. I'm in NZ this week. And maybe the fact that both of his brothers have had ACL problems may not have helped. It's sh@t for Jonty, he's a ripper lad too. The funny thing was he was clearly BOG in the under 18s gf this year as well. (And Sam Walker gave an absolute bath to someone else who was drafted as well).

Billy Smedts dad, Alby, played 46 games with us. From memory it was only 4 games short of the qualification at that stage.

Both the Reid boys would have been F/S qualified for us for the vast bulk of their junior days. Bruce played 84 or so games, well over the 50 games it was until 2 years (maybe 3) before Ben was drafted when they jacked it up from 50 to 100 games to qualify.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Then Bluey Hampshire gave him the flick.

Bad decision, Bruce was a pretty good player.

I thought he was too BAD. Played a number of games for Carlton after us too.

Ended up playing 33 games for Carlton. His brother John also played 78 games for us as well as a few at other clubs. Their father Bruce played 28 games for us in the 50s. Shame the dynasty was broken with Brucejr two sons.

I wonder who Bruce follows these days.

I wonder what we got back for him? Could it have been the right to recruit Jim Sewell?
