Thanks BT. With Smith recent serious ACL injury wouldn't this be a wiser move? Not sure who else we could target at that later stage of this draft?

No dramas. The club seem keen on giving it to Smith. My preference would be to let Dalrymple make the call. When they call out 'Pick 82', if Dal really likes a player there then let him do his thing and risk losing Smith, but trying to get him back. On the flip side, if Dal says there's nothing worth it then elevate him. But, my view is the club seem pretty keen on committing to Smith.

Getting Schache makes up a little bit for not having enough draft picks but I am bullish with our 2 early picks. I wish we still had something in the 30's and 40's as well

Most tipped us to take Coffield at our first pick.

          SEN, Today's update:
WESTERN BULLDOGS - Nicholas Coffield – Northern Knights, Victoria (Pick 9)

The Dogs have pure ball winning covered, but need speed on the outside, and Coffield is their man.

At 191cm he runs 2.89 seconds for 20 metres, is a precise kick and kicks goals. The loss of Jake Stringer gives rise to the Dogs looking for a playmaker forward of centre.

          AFLNation, Terry Wallace:
Terry Wallace’s draft Top 10 and where they could end up

          1. BRISBANE: Luke Davies-Uniacke (midfielder – Dandenong Stingrays)
          2. FREMANTLE: Paddy Dow (midfielder – Bendigo Pioneers)
          3. CARLTON: Cameron Rayner (midfielder – Western Jets)
          4. NORTH MELBOURNE: Adam Cerra (midfielder – Eastern Ranges)
          5. FREMANTLE: Jaidyn Stephenson (midfielder – Eastern Ranges)
          6. COLLINGWOOD: Jarrod Brander (forward/defender – Bendigo Pioneers)
          7. ST KILDA: Darcy Fogarty (midfielder – Glenelg)
          8. ST KILDA: Hunter Clark (defender/midfielder – Dandenong Stingrays)
          9. WESTERN BULLDOGS: Nick Coffield (defender – Northern Knights)
          10. CARLTON: Andrew Brayshaw (midfielder – Sandringham Dragons)

Thanks Choco. Yep, that's all but one having us taking Coffield. I wonder if that's inside word or them all genuinely being on the same page. It will be interesting if we take Coffield if Clark, Brayshaw &/or Fogarty are still in the mix.

If everyone is expecting us to take Coffield then I'm backing Not-Coffield with pick 9

Some reference at FootyProphet in regard to Academy and Father/Son players to watch this year.
                (LINK).

I wonder if any team would force Richmond hand to bid for Naish?

WHO ARE THE ACADEMY AND FATHER/SON PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR THIS YEAR ?

One of the biggest stories this year revolved around the much-maligned GWS Academy, who lost a huge catchment area along the NSW/Vic border. This meant that they were not given priority access to highly regarded players such as Jarrod Brander and Charlie Spargo, with Brander a big loss in particular given he is touted as a likely top 10 pick. The Giants do still have some talent available at their disposal, however, with the likes of midfielders Jack Powell and Nick Shipley.

Their neighbours to the east though, look like they’ll be quiet once more this year after back to back success stories in Heeney and Mills in 2014/15. James Bell certainly showed some impressive signs in the U18 Championships though, and could be one to watch develop.

The Suns have some interesting prospects in the form of Harry Simmington and North Queensland product Kwaby Boakye, but their best talent lies in ruckman Brayden Crossley. The big man made his senior NEAFL debut as a 16 year old and impressed in his 13 games for the Suns NEAFL side in 2017.

It’s the Lions that no doubt have the pick of the academy talent now that the Giants’ reach has been reduced, with Connor Ballenden. Whilst the key position talent hasn’t progressed in his senior year as well as many hoped, there are not many 198cm players that can move and kick like him. His switch from forward to back has proven a success this year, and there is no doubt he has plenty of upside.

For father/son nominations, they are few and far between this year. Patrick Naish is certainly the standout, with Richmond no doubt hoping that they can avoid having to use their first pick on him. The winger, who can also play from half-back, can really make things happen with his outside run and big right boot, and looks likely to attract a first round bid.

Tyler Brown will likely join his brother Callum at the Magpies after a solid year for Eastern Ranges. Despite not quite matching his brother in terms of ballwinning or contested footy, Tyler looks to be more effective by foot, and being nearly 10cm taller, he has plenty of scope for development.

Perhaps the only other father/son pick likely to get snapped up in the National Draft is Jackson Edwards, son of Adelaide 300 gamer Tyson. The balanced midfielder is incredibly calm and composed in congestion and efficient on either side of his body. He lacks the acceleration that would set him apart, but he’ll certainly be on the Crows’ radar.

Not sure if it is posted elsewhere, but it looks like we maybe using pick 82 with Smith delisted but promised a rookie spot (AFL website)

It's a certainty that another team will bid on Naish, it's just a matter of when. We may be a chance to do so at our second pick.

I think Naish is a pretty good fit for us in terms of list requirements, whereas Richmond are well stocked for nippy, skilled forwards. If we did bid at 16 I reckon we could just get him. If we get a really good runner/user at 9, like O'Brien or Coffield, then I reckon Naish would be an ideal second choice purely in terms of list balance.

Richmond have already nominated him up, so we need to make a bid.

This happens live during the draft though, we don't have to nominate prior. If it gets to pick 16 and he is the top of our list, then we make a bid.

Think back to when we picked Dunkley.

I can't see Richmond walking away from him for the sake of one spot. My guess is they'll match that bid without hesitation. Now if we bid pick 9 that might test their resolve. They have picks 20 and 25 as well so while they hope he slips through until later I can't see then not selecting him if we bid at 16.

All we have to do is select Naish at 9 or 16 if we think he is the best player for us at that pick. It's then up to Richmond to match that bid. History says most clubs match given the emotional connection, but Naish is not the type Richmond need. We did get Dunkley because Sydney chose not to match.
