Good hands around the clearance, definitely looks to use the hands as a first preference, didn't see him kick often under pressure. He moves well and he's able to stand up in the tackle or shrug himself free when moving.

Hard to gauge his field kicking, but I would've liked to see more kicking once he'd won first possession.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

He's good out in space GD and he's a good kick.

Rhylee West's "Tomorrow's Heroes" video on the AFL site:

Also, Jordan Clark has been hit by Glandular fever and tonsilitis which will likely delay his first preseason significantly. Apparently it is unlikely to impact interest in him/the position he goes.

Kevin Sheehan and Cal Twomey did a mock draft on the road to the draft podcast

They had us taking Bailey Smith at pick 8 and Rhylee West at pick 23.

There was still some excellent players left after their draft effort for the first round.

I like Smith, and 23 would be great for RW.

23 with discount would be 85 leftover points which equates to pick 66. Given the complex movements that BT flagged (I think) it would end up finishing closer to pick 56 when other clubs have had to cash in their picks on their FS/NGA's.

West and pick 56 for pick 27? Backflips.

I've been looking at the issue of leftover points and given the issue of number of picks = number of list spots, I now think you don't get back a later pick when you only give up one pick to match a bid. So if we give up 27, although that might end up being overs points wise, I don't think we get anything back later. Still not 100% sure either way as I've had trouble finding the applicable rules on the AFL site.

Smith also happens to be one of the youngest players in the draft FWIW.

You might be right, but I would be staggered if that's how it works given that in many cases it would make the discount redundant (ie you hold pick 10 and the bid comes in at 9). In our case, any bid at 21-26 all have the same result- once it hits pick 21 we see no benefit of the discount (assuming he doesn't drift past 27).

If true, it certainly makes the live trading of picks to try to claw back some of your picks full worth important.

I don't think that's right, you still get the later pick if overpaying

If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

That example uses two picks to cover the bid, which does give a pick back. I'm not as sure it's implemented for single picks but not 100% either way. The issue I have with getting a pick back when using only one pick to match is for example, in the above post, the idea is that we get back pick 66 for West but there's already a pick 66 (Essendon) and their pick won't change as we're only moving 27 to 23 so any picks from 28 onwards stay in the same spot.

I love the look of Butters. Reminds me a bit of Gaff with his excellent pace and his ability to cut angles and hurt teams with run and carry.

Would it be a stretch to select him at 7?

Otherwise I would be more than happy with any of Ben King, Jye Caldwell or Bailey Smith.

I think it would be but he is a talented player and should go top 15.

I wish we had a pick in the 10-20 range as I would like one of RCD, Butters or Stocker to go along with King/Smith/Caldwell and West.
