Given the strength of our younger group could there be a change in philosophy this year where we focus a lot more on state league type players that might adapt to the demands of senior football quickly?
Of course we would get Rhylee West and probably Khamis but if we use pick 6 on Wingard could we spend the rest of the draft also looking at the likes of Corbett and Collins from Werribee, Scott from Old Trinity, Clarke from Subiaco and even a low key trade?

I don't like the idea of missing out on the best youngsters when you have an early pick but if we could land Wingard knowing we have West in the bank could we look at some of the players I mentioned above?

Bevo actually said we need to inject more experience into the team, however, I think he is more inclined to go after a few AFL players. I expect we draft Wingard (or similar), West and Khamis, plus one other Crozier/Trengove type upgrade Roark, Gowers and Lynch. That is 7 new players on the list at minimum. We could also go after a state league player if we end up with 8 spots.

I hope so. But with the Lloyd news today, and the news in Lynch chosing Richmond (they can't retain Lloyd at all now, so he's cheap as chips to me), I'm now hoping that pick 86 is for Lloyd. So I'm not sure we can get Dylan in now. Maybe the rookie list?

I can update the 60's numbers now. We have picks 60 & 61, put will be pushed back by possibly compo on Dahl, Roughy, Gaff & Lynch. So maybe pick 64 & 65. That's about 190 draft points in value which may be needed towards the purchases of West & Khamis depending on how things play out over the two nights, or maybe one night if Rhylee somehow slides out of the first round. So we might not know for certain unless other draft pick trades are done and/or when Kahmis name is read out on the second night.

If there's points or picks left, there's another NGA kid, Lachy Dawson, who may be a late pick according to many, including ESPN. If we wanted him there's maybe a chance we may match a bid him or just select him in the ordinary way if we like him. We've been linked to Hayes and an ammo's player, although my guess is as rookies. I think we go best available, if these two are best available here then good.

My hunch, nothing to it as to actual proof, is that Roarke Smith might be in play with the last list spot. The wording in the media releases on Gowers & Lynch was that they were 'elevated'. Smith's media was that he agreed to another year, but didn't specify rookie or senior list. I think if we have to burn up the 60's picks on West & Khamis, if we get someone like pick 100+ then maybe Roarke's year next year is elevated for one year instead of a pick 100+ draftee on two years. I know the rules are that the club needs to notify the AFEL prior to the draft about elevations, but with everything changing around with the draft, I wonder with their permission if we could elevate him on the night if the draft team thought that was the best option with the events from earlier in the draft. Or if we can't, and last minute the decision is made on the best available evidence to do it. Just the wording of Roarke's media stuff perked my antenna up that we would leave him on the rookie list all things being equal, but leaving the door ajar to elevate him if that was the best way to manage the list. No facts here, just another of my wild conspiracy theories.

If we can get a third rounder (46) for Roughy, that's 331 points which gives us more than enough cover to take West & Khamis. Still leaving pick 7 to trade on Wingard or draft with, plus that pick 46 Roughy compo (hopefully) and then something later maybe Lachy Dawson (NGA) or Will Hayes or a smokey.

So we look to have five of our eight spots taken now (Lloyd, West, Khamis, Gowers, Lynch). So leaving 3 from Pick 7/Wingard, maybe 46 & later pick for use as above.

It looks like it's going to have to be a very precise raid on the draft for us this year after our strong target effort last year. I still can't believe we were able to land Naughton and Richards via the draft and Schache, Trengove and Crosier by trades

Where everything gets tricky for us is if pick 6/7 is enough to land Wingard because if the Dahlhaus compensation pick has to be added then our shopping list and options are reduced substantially. The other option to help us is to offer up a 2019 pick in the trade for Wingard but getting something back from them this year.

Assuming we land Wingard then we have added something special to our midfield and forward line, Lloyd might also help our forward line. West is a player for the midfield and Khamis will get time to further develop as defensive player. We shouldn't need to rush either of these boys.

All this sounds positive but have the right selections available to cover the need to find a player to replace the loss of both Roughead and Campbell or do we run the risk of going in with English being supported by the likes of Trengove and Boyd?

We will soon find out if our interest in Wingard is a genuine option and once that is determined we should be able to get our targeted players.
