    Re: 2019 Draft Watch

With list spots at a premium it goes to show how stupid a move it was to not keep Khamis as a category B rookie. If anybody ever gets a chance to chat to Sam Power please ask him why on earth they did this.

      Re: 2019 Draft Watch

Deven Robertson attracting top-10 interest ahead of AFL Draft after being likened to Joel Selwood

Deven Robertson hasn’t had a lot of spare time between working full-time and football commitments this year.

But when he does get a few moments to himself, the highly-rated AFL draft prospect enjoys spending it spinning records.

“I have a pretty decent vinyl record collection in my room,” Robertson said.

“I’ll chuck them on every time I get some downtime and listen to them.

“Tame Impala gets a good run. I do have quite a variety of music. A bit of old stuff, a bit of new stuff and a variety of genres.”

      DOB: 30/6/2001

      H: 182cm

      W: 80kg

      Position: Midfielder

      Plays like: Joel Selwood

      U18 National Championships averages: 30 disposals, 4 inside-50s, 4.8 clearances, 4 score assists, 6.8 tackles, 128 SuperCoach points

Robertson is more mature than your average 18-year-old – and it’s easy to see why the natural-born leader was named All-Australian captain after an impressive under-18 national championships for Western Australia.

“That was definitely was an honour but, in saying that, it is only an imaginary team,” Robertson said.

“What I enjoyed doing more was captaining WA to the title for the first time in 10 years. That’s what brought me the most honour.”

Former West Coast captain Darren Glass is Robertson’s uncle and the current Hawthorn assistant coach has been an inspiration and key source of advice in recent years.

But while Glass was a key defender, Robertson is a tough ball-winner more in the mould of Geelong captain Joel Selwood.

“He’s the type of player that I want to be like,” Robertson said of Selwood.

“He’s tough, he’s a leader, never backs out of a contest and wins a lot of contested ball.”

Robertson put his toughness on display when he played through a dislocated shoulder in the final game of the national championships, which he kept a secret for the entire second half.

“I didn’t want to mention it to any of the physios or doctors because I had a sneaky suspicion they’d pull me out of the game,” Robertson said.

He went on to undergo shoulder surgery which will mean a slightly delayed start to full-contact pre-season training, but that won’t turn away prospective suiters.

A top-10 prospect, Fremantle (picks 7 and 10) has been linked to Robertson, while Melbourne (pick 8) has also expressed interest.

Robertson averaged 30 disposals at the national championships – the most of any player – and does not hesitate when asked what his biggest strength is.

“Competitiveness. I’m like that in all the things I do,” Robertson said.

I wonder which club organised the invite for Kysaiah Pickett to attend the first round draft night? Could it have been us? It wouldn't surprise me.

I know that’s just one game, but I am just DREAMING of us having a player like that in our forward line

His positioning for goals 4 and 5 in that vid are excellent. Innate.

Love his highlights, but Pickett would be a big reach at 13 surely? Wouldn’t be against live trading the pick back into the 20s to pick up someone like Pickett or Taylor and pick up either another 2nd rounder this year or next.

If we want that Pickett kid and he is available at 13 then I think that we should take him at 13. He has skills that we miss on our list and would be welcome on it. Take him out wherever we can get him. He's an excitement machine. Love the first goal where he just strips the ball out of the defenders hands in the goal square

                    From AFEL.com.au - Cal Twomey

Kysaiah Pickett's recent call-up to attend the opening night of the NAB AFL Draft on November 27, when only the first round will be selected, surprised some clubs. But he has been linked to the Demons and also the Western Bulldogs at pick 13.

The Dogs are understood to have put plenty of time into the crafty small forward across the year.

                    ......................

Twomey’s bio on him in a seperate article:

                    Kysaiah PICKETT

                    Clubs: Woodville-West Torrens/South Australia

                    Position: Small Forward

                    Size: 171cm, 71kg

Bio: The lively forward has earned an invite to the draft, indicating a club in the first round is seriously considering drafting the nephew of Port Adelaide premiership player Byron Pickett. He is a true small forward who creates spark around the ball and knows the craft inside 50. His speed and agility is outstanding, with Pickett screaming X-Factor. He averaged two goals a game in the SANFL Reserves, with a standout performance coming earlier in the season where he took a huge mark and booted six goals.

I have only seen hos highlight reel and haven't really considered what we would be foregoing should we reach a bit and take him at 13 but from what I saw on the reel he brings a lot of tools that we just don't have and I'd be happy to take him at 13.

You know me I don't like mucking about and trying to turn one pick into two because we think we can snare him in the 20s and get another kid in as well. If we rate Kysaiah and want him then we should back him and the recruiters and spend pick 13 on him. After all you can't have enough good footballers on the list and this kid looks like a seriously good footballer.

If we trade down, and I very much doubt that we will, it won't be by much and it will still need to be in the first round.

Most clubs are prepared to take a flyer on a player that has his sort of upside and I tend to agree that you shouldn't try and squeeze more than you should. If we rate him as a first rounder, lets pick him at 13. I have some minor doubts though

He fits our needs for a savvy small crumbing forward with pace and skills and someone who takes the game on and he also helps our focus on bringing in some indigenous talent. A lot of boxes will be ticked if we draft him

It will be interesting to know if it spooks another club to have a rethink about taking him early.

I also think that it shows the player that if we take him at 13 then we really rate him and we are prepared to show a fair bit of confidence in him. I know that it can also be a "no pressure son" type of scenario (ie, there's plenty of pressure son but we won't just talk about it) but if we communicate to him that we think he is a player that can make us a better team almost straight away then it's not so much "no pressure son" but more of a "this is a huge opportunity to really make a name for yourself and we will support you in any way you see fit" sell to him, he could be our (younger and fitter) Eddie Betts.

                                Pick 13 + 51 = 1,471 points.

                                That equates to pick 17 & 39. Geelong have picks 17 & 36.

If McAsey is gone we might have a handshake agreement to live trade down a few spots so we can secure our second pick target via significant upgrade.
