    Re: 2019 Draft Watch

McAsey, if still around at our pick, would be my preference, doubt he'll be there though.
He would really set our KPP stocks up nicely into the future. Especially as we are shaping as being contender for next few years, and unlikely to get access to top flight KPP recruits with later picks in the 1st round.
Given we've got the anticipated Ugle-Hagan as a key forward pick next year as well, with McAsey on board, we would be in a good position spine wise for years to come.

I wouldn't be disappointed if Luke Jackson was still around at our first pick. Looks like a real mobile ruckman, and we know how Bevo likes a mobile ruckman. He would be a good foil for English and some much needed some long term ruck insurance in case English goes down with injury.
They've done studies you know, 60% of the time, it works every time!

He would be a welcome addition, he could play as a foward and in the ruck. I'd be surprised if he is still available but there is a chance

Great suggestion YHF, a bulldog supporting key position player.

I know we have no real list spots left but can we take Cooper Craig Peters as a cat b rookie? That would give us three young draftee inclusions and effectively a free hit at trying to get some indigenous talent involved at the club.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

                McAsey gets my vote too.

We've gone contend now over the trade period with our KPP, McAsey is a long term term option as YHF says and makes a lot of sense for us, particular when looking at our early draftees the last few years. We've added Smith (mid), West (forward/mid), Naughton (key forward), Richards (running utility) so a key defender seems the right balance.

Happy to take a flyer on a nippy forward with our second pick and otherwise see what Greene and Cavarra can do hopefully with a good preparation and more luck on the injury front.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Dalrymple I'd think. He loved the bottom aged bolters
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I love Jackson - my second favorite player in the draft and one of the two GC SHOULD be drafting - but we already have English.

Two developing ruck-first players and a senior coach who only plays one??? Not sure I like this plan.

The problem is an injury to English leaves us with a versatile tall and someone who hasn't demonstrated he has the mobility to add a lot of value. You will know his attributes far better than I but I could see Jackson as someone who could split time between forward and ruck duties.

I also don't think we should be ignoring players because we have a coach who doesn't prefer some types of players. He shouldn't really be a huge consideration in our best available approach

                        THE ADVERTISER

Glenelg premiership defender Will Gould – described as one of the best leaders in this year’s draft pool – has responded to questions about his fitness by shedding 6kg and slashing his skinfold levels in two weeks.

Admitting to being “a bit rusty’’ at the AFL Draft Combine, which was held just nine days after he helped the Tigers break a 33-year league premiership drought, Gould said he had been stung by some “pretty direct instructions’’ in his meeting with Sydney.

Key defender Gould weighed in at the combine at 106kg and recorded skinfold measurements of 78 after a week of celebrating Glenelg’s long-awaited flag.

When he last weighed himself two weeks ago – after he had pulled out of the Tigers’ end-of-season trip to Darwin to focus on his body and the draft – he had dropped to 100kg and his skinfold levels were down to 60.

The Swans had told Gould – SA’s under-18 captain this year – that his skinfolds needed to be measured at 55 or below before a club would draft him.

“There was a little bit of feedback from clubs at the combine,’’ the powerful 18-year-old told The Lowdown AFL Draft Podcast.

“The Swans just said in black and white that I needed to lose a bit of weight and get my skinfolds down to about 55, they were pretty direct with their instructions to get working.

“But I knew I wasn’t going to test that great because the combine had come so soon after the granny and I was still a bit rusty.

“I had a crack and did my best in every single test but for me, what I was doing between the combine to get myself ready for the 27th (draft on November 27) was most important.

“I’m in much better form now than what I was a few weeks ago.’’

Gould, who should be a first-round draft selection, said it had always been his dream to play AFL and he showed his commitment by not joining his premiership teammates in Darwin.

“I’m really close to all those boys and seeing all their Snapchats showed me what I was missing out on but it will be put in perspective when the draft comes around,’’ he said.

“I’ll do anything I can to play AFL, so it was just a little sacrifice for the bigger picture.’’

SANFL talent manager Brenton Phillips said Gould’s testing numbers in the past few years – “the body of work,’’ he calls it – showed he had an excellent combination of speed, agility and endurance.

A Geelong supporter from Lucindale in the southeast of South Australia, the 192cm Gould appears to have polarised recruiters.

His CV is outstanding, having shone for Glenelg and SA from the under-16s up.

Whatever level he plays at, he seems to rise to the occasion.

But the fact he already is so physically mature has had some clubs questioning his upside, just as they once did with two other Croweaters – West Coast premiership captain Shannon Hurn and now-retired Fremantle great Matthew Pavlich.

                        A dual All-Australian under-18, Gould’s game has been likened to Hurn’s.

“I’m a lot different to most of the kids in the draft in that I’ve been this big for a while now,’’ said Gould, a magnificent kick who took kick-in duties for Glenelg this year.

“But I’ve learnt to play on both talls and smalls and I’ve still got plenty (of improvement) to come.

“I'm a natural leader and think I’m someone who is ready to go next year, having played against men this year and AFL-listed boys in the Port and Crows teams in the SANFL, and wanting to play in round one.’’

Gould’s SA teammate Dylan Stephens, tipped to be the first SANFL player picked at this year’s draft and in contention to be selected by Adelaide at pick four, says he is one of the best leaders he’s come across.

“I’ve seen Will go about his captaincy this year (with the SA under-18s) and he is one of the best leaders in the draft pool,’’ said Norwood midfielder Stephens.

“Seeing him go about it gives me something to aspire to. He just sets such a great example on and off the field.’’

I'm both cautious and delighted to read the news on Gould
Good on the Swans for delivering a stinging reminder on the professionalism required and for Gould to respond in the manner he has

It begs the question though of what the heck was he thinking to balloon out like that?
I get the Glenelg celebration part but surely he didn't put on 6 to 8 kg in the 9 days after the grand final win? The issue with his weight gain had to happen before that

I still don't get how he could get so distracted before such an important test because he's clearly given some clubs reasons to prefer others over him

If you cant get motivated to get yourself fit to get drafted, does the motivation develop after getting paid thousands?

I guess you can look at this situation from both sides. I'd doubt he wasn't escalating in the KG's as the season progressed from his last weigh in as it was, and it's a positive that he's been to the combine, received feedback and stripped off a large portion of weight.

What I'd be interested in seeing is his previous testing results.

While I agree with the sentiment we have all experienced the impacts of distracted players on the playing list and know that sometimes it isn't quickly turned around. It's one of the reasons why some might have reservations with a player that turned up for essentially a job interview and didn't present and perform as well as he should.
If you look at his highlight reel he does look a prospect and he is a character with a good sense of humor which are all positive ticks but his combine results with endurance and pace must raise some doubts.
