We need at least one tall but could you really bet on it?

I haven't seen much of the VFL, but is Gardner any good?

He is only 197cm - that bit short for a ruckman. I know Trengove is that height, but I would rather a taller option.

He's not a ruckman but I think he is a good enough footballer.

Lewis Young is our next in line big man now and he is 197cm and lets just say he has a lean build

He hasn't played a minute of ruck time at VFL level I believe, but was kicking goals until he was thrown back to showcase some versatility.

He's the age and size we like and could well be the best available for his role at the mid-season draft.

It more than does in Bevo's view.
I did caution last year that we didn't have enough ruckman especially given the doubt on Boyd overcoming a couple of challenges and especially his back.

I just don't know how you could bring in a ruckman mid season an expect to make a decent contribution. How could they have done the work required?

Jonno Marsh took about 6 weeks to lift his fitness for the Saints and he'd previously been in the AFL for a period of time.
Taking a part time ruckman out of a state league team and expecting them to do much for the 2nd half of the season is a bit of a long shot in my opinion. They can't have done anywhere near the work of a full time professional player.

Harvey Stevens was 183cm. That's right, players have gotten taller over the years.

It would appear the club were never counting on Boyd playing this year. We have English and Trengove, Lewis Young now the makeshift back up, along with Sweet. I just don't see Bevo signing off on having a ruckman there for the sake of it unless there is someone we really rate.

I think we looked at ruckman at the end of last year, but there just wasn't anyone available.

No shit but ruckman have been around that 195-210 height range for about 30 years plus now.

197 maybe of the shorter range, but i guess it depends on their jump and what they offer on the ground. I wouldnt be ruling someone out just because they are 197cms.
