Twomey's team of the year so far
THERE are the highly rated talents like Jason Horne and Nick Daicos who have entered their draft season and lived up to expectations.
There are the surprises, like Finn Callaghan, Mac Andrew and Josh Gibcus, who have rocketed into top-10 considerations due to exciting openings to the season.
Then there are overagers Jacob Edwards and Cody Raak, who are eligible for the mid-season rookie draft in June after being overlooked in last year's intake but whose form warrants being in this side.
AFL.com.au will put a spotlight on weekly changes, looking at the players who have pushed themselves into the side and those who may have dropped out, while highlighting the consistent showings of prospects who have held their positions in the 22.
The first line-up consists of 12 Victorian players, seven from South Australia, two from Western Australia and one from the northern states.
Two father-sons start in the side – potential No.1 pick Daicos and Sam Darcy, who shapes as a possible top-five selection and is tied to the Western Bulldogs where his father Luke is a club great.
If Raak is not selected at the mid-season intake, where key forward Edwards is expected to be the top pick once he nominates, then the Dogs will get first call on the NGA prospect at the end-of-year draft in November.
Callaghan and Gibcus have both pushed themselves right into the mix as early pick contenders, while Tyler Sonsie's performance at VFL level recently highlighted his traits.

Western Bulldogs could win big at AFL Draft yet again via father-son bolter
A year after the AFL scrapped the Next Generation Academy rules that saw the Western Bulldogs pounce on Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, the same club could be set to win big in the father-son stakes as Sam Darcy, son of club great Luke Darcy, rockets up the draft order.
Currently Nick Daicos, son of Collingwood legend Peter Daicos and younger brother of current Pies player Josh Daicos, is a good chance to be taken at Pick 1 in this year’s draft, which Collingwood would then have the option to match under the league’s father-son rule.
Speaking on 3AW Sportsday, 1988 Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy said he had overheard a couple of player managers at a Melbourne cafe on Thursday with news that pricked his ears.
“They didn’t see me and I saw them and I sidled up behind them and they were talking about a kid I’ve known about but haven’t really heard about,” he said.
“I’m told he is the biggest bullet in the draft and he’s going that well he may go from somewhere between 15 and 20 to challenge Nick Daicos as the number one pick.
“My ears overheard this conversation that Sam Darcy, son of Luke, is killing them at Scotch College and they look forward to his performance with the Oakleigh Charges as the NAB League continues.”
If a club is to bid on Daicos with Pick 1 and Darcy with Pick 2, it could lead to a bizarre situation where North Melbourne, widely expected to finish at the bottom of the ladder and secure the opening pick of the draft, aren’t able to take either of their first two preferences at the draft as they look to rebuild.
Last year, after some clubs were unhappy with the already contending Dogs having access to a player the calibre of Ugle-Hagan, the AFL put in place a ‘protected’ zone for NGA players in the first 20 picks of the draft.
It means that, from now on, Academy players who are bid on with the first 20 picks in the draft fall are unable to be bid on by their NGA club.
Speaking ahead of the draft last year, former Fremantle coach Ross Lyon supported Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson’s complaints about the draft being compromised.
“We talk about integrity within the competition. The draft, based on that, has lost its integrity,” Lyon said on Footy Classified.
“Doesn’t it highlight that clubs should invest and develop players and put them into the pool. That’s not what we’re doing are we? We’re developing them if we get them.”
Lyon was also in favour of scrapping the father-son rule in an effort to even out the competition more.
“In my view, get rid of father-son,” he said.
“Let‘s get equality in the competition. We’ve got too many clubs struggling.”

Re: 2021 draft watch
Lyon wants to scrap father son because it's only ok if the player is crap?
Player is pick 55 "I love the romance of the father son"
Possible top 5 "Get rid of it *outrage* *outrage*".BT COME BACK!

I would give up Darcy if it meant the Pies missed out on Daicos just to see the melts. Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.Comment

Re: 2021 draft watch
It's not like there are these father son dominant teams smashing the rest of the competition!
Libba, Viney, Tomahawk? Probably the best 3 currently at the club of their father.
Daniher isn't at the Dons, Mitchell isn't at the Swans.
So it doesn't stand up to any scrutiny at all.BT COME BACK!

Re: 2021 draft watch
If we have NGAs and Father-sons having to use Draft Points for the receiving club, I don't see why the same doesn't apply to free agents.
Say it was Tom Lynch wanting to go from Gold Coast to Richmond - he nominates Richmond, then just like father-son any club can nominate him in the draft and then Tigers have to match the points."I'll give him a hug before the first bounce and then I'll run into my pack and give them orders to rip him apart."Comment
