Re: 2021 draft watch
I do wonder if recruiters get a bit too cute with late picks by going for the hail-mary pick on a kid tucked away who looks great the six times he gets the ball per game and ignoring kids who are just natural footballers who understand the game.Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

Cut and pasted from The West (paywall via link: https://thewest.com.au/sport/afl-dra...ng-b881880452z )
WA’s best draft prospects battled it out in an internal 19s trial match at Leederville Oval ahead of the national under-19s carnival opener against South Australia in July. Here’s how it panned out.
The stand-outs
WA Football Commission State talent manager Adam Jones described Subiaco’s Neil Erasmus, East Fremantle’s Josh Browne and East Perth’s James Tunstill’s midfield performances as “prolific as per usual”.
Lions senior regular Matt Johnson got better as the game went on, finding plenty of it in the second half, while Swan Districts running machine Max Chipper was his workmanlike self.
West Perth small defender Zac Fleiner’s strong colts form translated into a big trial game, providing his usual rebound out of the backline.
Versatile East Fremantle tall Jack Williams was the premier big man on the ground, especially after half-time.
“Williams worked into the game in the second half and in the third quarter especially, he kicked a couple of nice goals,” Jones said.
“He was the pick of the big blokes.”
Fellow key forward, East Perth’s Jye Amiss who played on the opposition side, had plenty of opportunities but couldn’t convert which is rare for him.
Small forwards Jesse Motlop (South Fremantle/Aquinas), Richard Farmer (Subiaco/Hale) and Kaden Harbour (East Perth) also caught the eye.
“Kaden Harbour had a really strong game,” Jones said.
“He’s got really strong pressure and took some nice overhead marks.
“Motlop had a really good game, one of his better performances for the year, as did Richie Farmer.”
Perth’s Jack Avery played his usual intercept-marking defender role to perfection, racking up midfield-like numbers.
Fellow Demon Jaiden Hunter, who has been playing a mix of seniors and league this season, also impressed down back.
Subiaco colts premiership player Jake South is firming for the lead ruck role after a big trial game and strong WAFL form.
“He’s been so impressive with his ability to compete and follow up,” Jones said.
“He can also go forward and kick goals and take a really nice mark. He was the stand-out ruck on the day.”
The strengths
WA’s key forward stocks are looking good with Claremont’s Jacob van Rooyen and East Fremantle’s Jack Williams the highest rated and East Perth’s Jye Amiss and Peel’s Luke Polson also going well.
Swan Districts’ Rhett Bazzo has been playing mainly as a forward this year but will likely fill a key defensive post in the championships.
Jones admits the midfield division is looking much better than first thought, with Subiaco pair Matt Johnson, Neil Erasmus, Sharks ball magnet Josh Browne and East Perth’s Kade Dittmar and James Tunstill all improving out of sight.
“Guys like Browne and Erasmus have come from nowhere to be really strong colts players,” Jones said.
“We’ve certainly got a good mix with (East Perth pair) Kade Dittmar and Tunstill as well.”Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment
