    Mid Season Draft - 2021

Jumping Jake looms large for mid-season draft

A Victorian schoolboy giant - likened to Max and Ben King - could be picked up in this this year’s mid-season draft, prompting frustration from interstate clubs.

Jumping Jacob Edwards, an athletic 202-centimetre ruck/forward, looms as the likely first pick in this year’s mid-season draft, after being overlooked in the national draft.

The 18-year-old, like many potential Victorian draftees, was unsighted in 2020 because of the impact of COVID-19, meaning he wasn’t picked up last December.

But the big man, who is a late developer after switching from basketball as a junior, has been turning heads in the NAB League while playing for Sandringham.

“Jacob is a jumper,” Dragons talent manager Mark Wheeler said.

“He’s big, he’s agile, and he kicks it as good as anybody. He wasn’t really on our radar for the 2020 draft, he always felt he would go in the 2021 draft.”

Because Edwards nominated for last year’s draft, he is eligible for this year’s mid-season equivalent.

It essentially means a club such as North Melbourne - who look likely to have the first selection - could get in early and take Edwards before he’s available in the national draft later in the year.

Edwards, who is still only 78 kilograms, will almost certainly not be ready for AFL football this year but could be allowed to develop at school level and in the NAB League while on an AFL list.

The 18-year-old has had some recruiters salivating with his rare ability to ruck with both his left and right hands and has been pushing forward and kicking goals.

Edwards has already been interviewed by Fremantle, Sydney and Hawthorn.

“He’s a bit like the King boys, Max and Ben,” Wheeler said.

“He’s definitely a ruck because of his leap and hands on the ball, but they need to be able to play a secondary position. His hands on the ball are actually unbelievable.”

The pending selection of Edwards would be vastly different from the last mid-season draft, which led to Marlion Pickett being selected by Richmond in 2019 and make his debut in a winning grand final.

Ryan Gardner (Western Bulldogs), Will Snelling (Essendon) and John Noble (Collingwood) are the players still on AFL lists from that mid-season draft in 2019.

Interstate clubs have also expressed their disappointment that it would not be feasible for them to select someone like Edwards, who is still completing his year 12 studies at Mentone Grammar.

“If they’re still at school, it’s simply not equal,” one interstate recruiter told The Age.

The selection of Edwards, however, would not be to fill a gap at AFL level this year but more to develop him over a long period of time.

Interstate clubs would argue it would be harder to develop a schoolboy while he’s still at school, given he would be flying to and from the club to train.

But the AFL has no problem with teenagers being selected.

“We want the best players across the country, whether they are 18 or 28, to be able to have the opportunity to reach the elite level,” an AFL spokesperson said.

Richmond, Western Bulldogs, West Coast, Geelong, Fremantle and Greater Western Sydney don’t currently have an available spot on their list, but teams can add players to long-term injury lists in order to create availability.

“I think he’s a long-term prospect, he won’t be one to break in at the level this year, I wouldn’t have thought,” Wheeler continued.

I don’t know anything about him but there’s a guy in the WAFL called Gregory Clark that had 37 on the weekend, is 193cm and appears to have been carved out of granite and I say we draft him.

Played State 18's for WA back in 2014.

Nice kid. Good player. Think he has played in 3 or 4 premierships for Subiaco since being overlooked mostly as a 3rd tall defender...has been playing a bit of mid lately.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Travis Varcoe mentioned on the Yokayi show that he might nominate for the mid season draft. Not sure if he was joking or not.

Mid-season draft contenders, ex-Crows trio on radar

POSSIBLE NO.1 MID-SEASON PICK WEIGHING UP NOMINATING
THE POTENTIAL top pick of June's NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft, Sandringham big man Jacob Edwards, is weighing up whether to nominate or wait until the end-of-year national draft.

AFL.com.au revealed earlier this month that the athletic 202cm Edwards had jumped into contention for the mid-season draft with an impressive start to the NAB League season with the Dragons.

His form has continued as a versatile key forward/ruckman with good skills and clubs believe he is a standout in the mid-year pool after being overlooked for last year's draft. North Melbourne currently holds the No.1 choice after its winless start to the season.

But Edwards has not yet decided whether he will nominate for the mid-season draft or sit it out and wait to have his name called at the end of the year, with the 18-year-old viewed by some as having top-10 claims in the draft if he did not go mid-season. He is considering the pros and cons of joining the mid-season pool.

Re: Mid Season Draft - 2021

There was some talk whether players had to nominate for the MSD or if they missed out in 2020, their nomination rolls over automatically. This seems to confirm players have to specifically nominate for the MSD.

I'm still hopeful Raak doesn't nominate and either goes top 20 in the National Draft (and therefore we lose access to him but good on him) or we match a bid later.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

Revealed: The top AFL mid-season draft prospects set to do battle in Colgate Young Guns game

On Saturday, Victoria’s best under-23 prospects will have a big chance to impress AFL recruiters. See who has been picked to play in the state’s showcase game.

The best and brightest mid-season draft prospects will have one of their final chances to impress AFL recruiters this weekend in an exhibition match showcasing Victoria’s best young talent.

The Colgate Young Guns game will feature the state’s best under-23 players that are eligible for the mid-season draft in a Metro v Country clash.

Of the 52 players selected in the initial squads for the match, 48 hail from NAB League teams while four are from VFL clubs.

NAB AFL Academy member Ned Moyle has been named as part of the Vic Metro squad and has emerged as a strong mid-season draft prospect.

A 205cm ruckman, Moyle caught the eye of recruiters with a competitive performance in last month’s Academy game against Geelong’s VFL team.

Another ruckman who has similarly attracted mid-season draft interest is 202cm Calder Cannons big man Liam Podhajski, who joins Moyle in the Vic Metro squad.

Eastern Ranges forward Corey Preston, who trained with the Western Bulldogs in search of a Supplementary Selection Period (SSP) list spot during pre-season, will also line up for Vic Metro.

Western Bulldogs Academy members Ewan Macpherson and Cody Raak are on the same team.

The Vic Country squad features a pair of prospects who are brothers of current AFL players.

Charlie Ham — the brother of Essendon’s Brayden Ham — has made a strong start to the season for the Geelong Falcons after being overlooked in last year’s drafts.

Will Papley — the brother of Sydney’s Tom Papley — is a lively forward for Gippsland Power, where his brother also came through the ranks.

Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Will Bravo, who missed out on an SSP spot at Hawthorn over summer, is also part of the Vic Country squad.

The match will be played at Werribee Oval on Saturday from 2.40pm.

The AFL’s mid-season draft will be held on June 2.

A SNAPSHOT OF THE KEY 2021 MID-SEASON DRAFT PROSPECTS

AFL Media draft guru Cal Twomey says there is a clear top pick in this year’s mid-season draft, provided the player in question actually nominates.

Sandringham Dragons talent Jacob Edwards is rated as the most likely candidate to go at no.1 in next month’s draft, but is also tipped to go in the first round of the National Draft if he opts for that path.

Twomey, who expects around 15 picks total to be made on June 2, says Edwards is yet to make a call on whether he will nominate for mid-season or wait for another opportunity later this year.

Edwards would likely attract considerable interest from both North Melbourne and Hawthorn if he were to nominate, according to Twomey.

“There’s a guy who looks like being the number one pick, if he does nominate, and that’s Jacob Edwards,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

                            “He’s a 19-year-old key forward/ruckman out of the Sandringham Dragons. He’s 202cm, agile, a nice kick.

“He’s still weighing up whether he does nominate or not. You can either wait it out and push to the end of the year where he could probably be a first round pick. That would be a pretty likely scenario if he did hold out.

“Not many can get access to him now because if he does nominate for the mid-season draft, I’d be shocked if North Melbourne didn’t take him at pick 1 or the Hawks at the next pick.

“However, he’s weighing up and he hasn’t nominated yet. I think he’s leaning towards nominating, but if he held out and actually waited until the end of the year, at this point given his athleticism, his kicking, his start to the season, I’d view him as a top 20 pick.

“He’s the guy that everyone has been hyping up a bit around this mid-season draft.

                            “He’s not a mature-ager, he’s still at school, so he’s a long-term investment rather than a short-term fix.”

Twomey also commented on a number of players plying their trade around the country who are also in the mix for the draft that will take place in the week between Rounds 11 and 12 of the AFL season.

“There’s Ned Moyle (Oakleigh Chargers/Collingwood VFL) who is a big ruckman and I think is a good chance to get taken,” Twomey added.

Cam McLeod from the Murray Bushrangers. He’s a 190cm goalkicker who has done some good stuff.

Max Heath (Sandringham Dragons) is another ruckman who is in that boat.

Luke Cleary (Sandringham Dragons), Josh Green - the brother of Tom at GWS - has played some VFL (with the Giants), he’s 19 as well.

“They’re the group of names that are in that bracket, but I don’t think as many have emerged as they might have expected at the start of the season.”

From a more mature age perspective, there are some former Adelaide Crows who are making an impact in both the SANFL and VFL.

Tyson Stengle and Riley Knight are playing well for for Woodville-West Torrens, while Jordan Gallucci is doing some good things for Williamstown.

“Tyson Stengle is a player who will be looked at by clubs, there’s no doubt about that,” Twomey said.

“There’s a view that he is the most talented player outside the AFL system right now.

“Does a club give him his third chance at AFL level? He’s a prospect.

“Riley Knight from the Crows as well, has been playing some really good footy in the SANFL in the midfield. Does a club bring him in and just hope that over the next six months he can really help their premiership push?

“Jordan Gallucci is another former Crow who trained at the Tigers in the pre-season. Started the year pretty well with Williamstown in the VFL.”

Former Collingwood and St Kilda midfielder Nathan Freeman is another with previous AFL experience who is attracting interest.

He has tallied 40, 42, 36 and 44 disposals in four games for Frankston, but would have to make a call on nominating again or focusing on his player-management career.

“What a start to the VFL season he’s had, averaging 40-plus,” Twomey said of Freeman.

“He’s going to have to want to nominate. He’s in the game as a VFL player but also a part of the Connors Sports Management group, so it’s going to be a decision he’ll have to make.

“He’d have some clubs looking at him, but it’s a matter of whether a club backs him. He’s getting a great run at it fitness-wise for the first time in a long time.”

The Gold Coast Suns have some ruck woes with co-captain Jarrod Witts and youngster Matt Conroy sidelined for the season with knee injuries. They are keeping an eye on a number of mature aged big men.

Corey Gault, the former Collingwood ruckman, Wylie Buzza, who has been at Geelong and Port Adelaide, they are guys that Gold Coast are looking at as part of their ruck conundrum,” Twomey said.

Michael Knowles, he was part of the mid-season draft two years ago with the Swans, is on the Gold Coast radar as well. One to look for whether he is a two-time mid-season drafter.”

Twomey then provided a quick snapshot on a number of names fired at him.

                            Luke Partington (Glenelg)
“Unlikely I think. I think he’s done enough at AFL level and the clubs he’s been at to say that.”

                            Myles McCluggage (South Warrnambool/GWV Rebels)
“I don’t think so. He’s probably a better chance at the end of the year.”

                            Frank Anderson (Swan Districts)
“He’s been around the system for a little while now. He’s been overlooked a few times so a club would had to have seen some improvement in him over the past six months to suggest they’ll take a chance.”

                            Ryley Stoddart (Carton VFL)
“He’s an interesting one. He’s got some real attributes. He’s a really nice kick and can run with the footy pretty well.

“I think clubs have been keeping an eye on him. He’s part of that Carlton VFL mix and part of their leadership group as well.

“His experience at the Swans would count for a fair bit.”

                            Toby Wooller (Carlton VFL)
“I don’t think so. He’s probably found that level where he’s playing some good footy but I’m not sure he was at that point at the Brisbane Lions.”

And any nibbles for Kade Simpson?

“Not as yet. He’d take the right club, wouldn’t he?”

The 2021 AFL Mid-Season Draft takes place on Wednesday, June 2.

Good to hear. With Raak’s year so far in the NAB League you’d expect him to be mentioned. Perhaps Cody is taking the year to develop on the NAB League, rep footy and VFL and seeing if he gets to the club in ND. Perhaps?
