I'm not convinced that the 6 match/6 week rule that applies to elevate Category B rookies applies for drafting players from the midseason draft. The initial midseason draft rule back in 2019 said:
The 6 week rule was definitely in place for the mid season draft last year and has been linked earlier in this thread.
Whether it still applies and what exactly happens after the injured player returns we are only guessing as the AFL for some reason just do not make it clear to the general public.

I don’t get the lack of transparency. Surely we are not asking too much.

That just means we are yet to open up a spot. We still can but given we don't have anyone with more than a 6-8 week prognosis and undoubted financial challenges, it seems unlikely we participate.

The reason I put that up is surely we wouldn't be nominating the last minute.

Why not? Essendon have just opened up a spot by moving Hurley to the inactive list. Other clubs will be making similar calls. I don't think we will do anything but it makes sense to wait as long as possible to assess the progress of any injuries.
Losing $300,000 Bain’s might be concerned about the $50,000 of every player on a 6 month contract. We could have up to 3-4 picks for us to consider using (Dunks, AT, Jong & perhaps VDM have more than 6 weeks injury left).
How many picks should we use?
I doubt we will use any. The boys who are currently injured will be back in 6-8 weeks so I doubt we will bother.

What types of players? Mature ready to go, or highly talented youth to bank them away?
What positions should they play?
Do we look at former AFEL Players?
Do we look to a Footscray player who would be advanced in our systems? (Ie Gardner)
Any names want to specify?
If we do enter the MSD I think we we should as a matter of priority address any positional needs ahead of youth in this instance. We are contending so experience would be preferred in my view if we can find it.
The key areas are
Ruck
Key Defender
Small Crumbing Forward
Will there be any decent experienced ruckmen available at our pick? Doubtful, especially as several other clubs with picks ahead of us are reportedly after ruckmen.
Could we find a Key defender in this draft who could step in straight away? Again doubtful. We have 4 key defenders available now. Keath is a lock with Gardner, Cordy & Young (probably in order of MC preference) available for selection. We could possibly go after someone like Schlensog but is that better than what we have? Would it just be simply adding to the pile? If we want to seriously bolster our KPD stocks then I think we go to market during the trade period or draft a young gun.
Left field is we pick from Footscray and give JGM a chance. He cover KPD & backs up in the ruck at VFL level. But same question. Is he a realistic chance to jump the queue for a senior spot this year?
In terms of small forwards, again how many could step in right now to help us? Would Stengle be an option? I doubt we would go after a naughty boy. Corey Preston I don't mind but I doubt he is ready to go now. A couple of looks at him this season tells me he is a nice player but he hasn't screamed out "DRAFT ME" from my viewings in a couple of games so far. However he has had other cracker games.
I think we have until 5pm this afternoon to lodge our intention to enter the draft. So if we do it will be interesting what we plan to do.
We don't have anyone that we want to rule out for the rest of the season, so I don't see any reason why we would be moving someone to the LTI list. If we wanted that player to play again this season, we'd have to hope for another season ending injury in the next 6-8 weeks and I'm certainly not about to hope for that.

The AFL website seems to confirm this line of thinking:
By making Hurley inactive, it all but concedes the Bombers have put a line through his season. However, should the 30-year-old make a rapid recovery, he would be able to be lifted to the 'active' list if another player suffered a long-term injury.
They also mention that of the 4 clubs without a list spot, Freo and Geelong have declared they are not taking part, West Coast are making a decision today and us? Crickets...
‘ With no further retirements, or season-ending injuries, the Bulldogs are unable to open up a list spot to select a player.’
It’s a shame in one sense, I think some clubs are using it as a free hit to get kids they would have moved on in the National draft. Sure they may not be ready or needed, but neither is Bedendo.
Queue jumping on a few smokeys aside, I was hoping we might take a few if for no other reason that it may help deliver us a VFL flag.

Who would you have moved onto the injury list for the rest of the year? Jong? VDM?
