Basically it saves us delisting a player.

I haven't done the actual maths either, so 43 might mean we don't have to use 52 or maybe even 45 on Darcy. That means we wouldnt have to delist a player to activate them and could trade them out for future picks or to upgrade a different pick. Basically 43 vs 55/58 could mean one or two players not delisted and a future third or something coming back our way next year vs nothing.
We do have to take three players in the draft, so I guess we upgrade Sweet and Roarke

Should have taken Shai Bolton when we had the chance.
Does the player have much say at the end of the day?

Pretty sure if you are upgrading someone then that pick is not able to be used for bid matching. I think you pre-commit to the upgrades so we can't just rock up with all those picks and then decide on the night that we'll upgrade Sweet and Roarke into them, so if we are upgrading them then we need to find additional list spots for them to fill if we want to use those picks for Darcy.

        I may be wrong though.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

No, almost none. The most he can say to the club trading for him is that he doesn't want his previous club to get shafted but after that it's all on the list management team at both clubs to work it out.

He could ask his manager to not nominate a single club and help secure a deal all parties are happy with. The manager works for the player.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

That’s good news particularly in light of the news we aren’t chasing any ruckman currently up for trade. A no brainer but hope that the club spends a lot of time and effort in the off season developing Sweet and English as well as our defensive set ups around centre clearances.

Doesn't the player have to wait until the PSD to be able to train with the team, use facilities etc. I think the player would have a small say in it and suggest that they don't want to take that route.

I don't think it'll come to that though.

All I know is all clubs must draft three players every season.

This NEVER happens. There always has to be a preferred option so the clubs can actually try and work out a deal without worrying about if the player will back out. A player like Lipinski would talk to several clubs, then he and his management would work out the best option for them, including which club(s) can get a deal done, then come back with the nomination.

Yes, the player will almost always prefer to get traded now rather than have 6 weeks in limbo, even though most of that time will be off-season. You'd still prefer to meet the coaching staff early, talk to new teammates, get an off-season training plan worked out, etc.

HOW TIGERS CAN HELP PIES LAND LIPINSKI

Richmond is taking aim at Collingwood’s pick 27 but the touted deal depends on the Tigers securing a trade with North Melbourne for Robbie Tarrant.

It’s understood Richmond is willing to bundle up selections 38 – the free agency compensation for new Sun Mabior Chol – 42 and 47 to acquire what is currently the Magpies’ top pick.

That would give the Tigers an extraordinary five picks inside the top 30, while Collingwood would have almost 500 more draft points to match a bid for father-son prospect Nick Daicos.

Those three picks could also be used to end the stalemate with the Western Bulldogs on Patrick Lipinski, who wants to wear black and white next year.

The Pies have already been heavily involved in pick swaps this week, including most recently sending No. 22 to Fremantle on Thursday for 27 and a future third-round selection.

Yes I think it sucks that players are allowed to nominate, well actually INSIST on the club they want to go to. Very unfair on the clubs. We all know Lipinski would be worth quite a bit more than Collingwood are offering if he was on the open market. I think the AFL needs to look at this. Specially when you have the threat of the Pre season draft hanging over your head. If other clubs had the chance to bid on him, the situation would be a lot healthier for the competition.

The upgrades have no impact on draft spots. We can use all our picks that carry points and then use the next pick that comes up.

Effectively it just pushes available picks further down.

If 90 picks have been used by all clubs we can conceivably use 91 and 92 to upgrade rookies.

Clubs don't use picks to upgrade rookies, hasn't been done like that for many years. Rookie upgrades are done outside the draft.
