    Harley Reid

AFL Media’s Cal Twomey expects clubs to put together huge trade offers for pick No. 1 in this year’s National Draft.

While clubs have offered multiple first-round picks in the past for the top selection in the draft, Twomey expects those proposals to come this off-season without any caveats or requests for multiple picks in return.

“I think this year will be the first time that clubs offer three straight first-rounders for pick one,” Twomey said on SEN Breakfast.

“In the last couple of years, we’ve seen three offered for North Melbourne’s pick back in 2021, but there was something coming back as well (in those deals).

“Last year Melbourne threw up three first round picks for Essendon’s first pick, but they were also getting another pick back in the 20s for that deal.

“This time I reckon clubs will go all out and say, ‘Here’s three straight first-rounders, does it tempt you?’”

The reason clubs are expected to push so hard for that first selection is due to the player, at this stage, expected to be taken at number one – Bendigo Pioneers star Harley Reid.

After putting a stunning bottom-age season together for the Pioneers and Vic Country, Twomey is excited to go and watch the young gun as he plays his second Coates Talent League game of the season.

“I’m going up to Bendigo to watch him on Saturday,” Twomey said.

“I think there’ll be a convoy of recruiters and interest in Harley Reid.

“It’s fascinating the level of interest that’s already on him.

“Down at Mars Stadium last week in Ballarat he almost had a cheer squad following him from end-to-end, he had 20-odd touches and kicked two goals.

“He had about 15 fend offs as well, he’s really exciting to watch and I’m sure he’ll put on a show now that we’re heading down on Saturday.”

After their Round 1 loss to the GWV Rebels, Reid and the Pioneers will hope to pick up their first win of the season when they face the GWS Giants Academy at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo on Saturday.

We will be in a position to offer 3 first round picks in exchange for pick 1 this year. Harley Reid the hot favourite to go 1st.

      Should we do it?

I don't know if I would do it but he is a special talent.
What position do you see him filling at the senior level?

Only knowing the cliff notes on him, no. Nothing to do with him. We’ve used a heap of capital on JUH & Darcy. We need to bring in many first round kids/trades of players worth a first rounder. I’d prefer to extend the batting depth than go for another heavy hitter. That’s just how I see the list. Three very good players, and maybe a free agent, is a nice list re-fresh.

Why would we need to trade for pick one? Brisbane already gave it to us?

I've read that comparison but from the times I've seen him I'm not sure how accurate it is. Still this is going to be the best season to judge him.

I'm really wary of trading up.
Remember when we held pick 4 in 2013, and we were prepared to sell the farm to trade up and get pick 1?

We would have picked up Tom Boyd, and lost assets including that Bontempelli fellow taken at pick 4.

We have two firsts - we could feasibly pick up an early 20s aged running player from Port (Bergman/Duursma) and then take the other first rounder to draft. Package our later picks up to a club that needs points to grab another second rounder.

                      A quick look at 2018 draft :
AFL draft history and statistics. Includes national, pre-season and rookie draft picks as well as past pre-draft and midyear selections.

Top 10 ( last number is games played so far) :
1 Carlton Sam Walsh Carlton 81
2 Gold Coast Jack Lukosius Gold Coast 75
3 Gold Coast Izak Rankine Adelaide 50
4 St Kilda Max King St Kilda 60
5 Port Adelaide Connor Rozee Port Adelaide 83
6 Gold Coast Ben King Gold Coast 55
7 Western Bulldogs Bailey Smith Western Bulldogs 87
8 North Melbourne Tarryn Thomas A North Melbourne 57
9 Adelaide Chayce Jones Adelaide 58
                      10 Sydney Nick Blakey A Sydney 80

Was Sam walsh worth trading first round picks to get him ? Only time would tell but we got incredible value for Baily Smith slipping to our pick 7.

Smith, Walsh, and Rozee are the only players I consider as having influence on games from this draft.

Lukosiu, what has he really done to be offered that incredible salary? Hopefully that clogs up Aedaide's salary cap for ages.

I hope we are trying to get the best talent available for our picks. First round picks are precious commodity.

What has happened to Chayce Jones?
Tarryn may not be on an afl list if he does not sort out his behaviour issues.
                      The King brothers are injured.

The trading into the draft is an inexact science and so much based on potential.

Surprisingly, Lachlan Schultz has played 65 games! great pick from freo at pick 57.

Also, we’ve been doing very well out of our recent firsts.

Bundle up three players (picks) we’d hand over for the #1 Pick?

Naughton, Smith, Marra, Darcy, Weightman (we haven’t seen Buss).

Jones was a strange pick at the time and it stands out as a poor selection.
There are a few in this list I'd gladly trade 2 x 1st rounders for and I'd think Walsh is the pick of them and could be worth 3.

It's very easy to want to get a bit clever or cute with picks.
Unless a super player in their early 20s pops up, I really hope we take our 'earlier' first round pick to draft and pick up a running type.
