"WESTERN Bulldogs midfielder Ed Richards is expected to be the next big name to wipe his name off the free agency list.

Richards was one of just five remaining restricted free agents left on the AFL's official free agency list it distributed to clubs on Monday.

But rival clubs are aware Richards is intent on staying at the Dogs, with Gettable revealing this month that he was in discussions on a five or six-year extension that would see him join 'Club 2030' as the players around the competition signed to at least 2030.

Richards, Hawthorn's James Worpel, Carlton's Tom De Koning, Brisbane's Brandon Starcevich and West Coast's Oscar Allen are the only remaining restricted free agents in the pool.

Clubs are watching with fascination on Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli's contract talks, with discussions not yet progressed.

JUH traded out, don't care where as long as we are compensated well enough. It's at a stage now where he is better off someone else's problem.
JJ and Duryea pull the pin.
Coffield delisted as he never gets on the park and is bog average when he is.
Poulter is in trouble as we don't seem to have a position for him and I'm not sure if he is actually AFL standard.
Artie Jones and Baker are just hanging on but at least have some leg speed but really need a good finish to the year as speed alone won't save them.
We also started the season one short saving a spot open for the mid season draft so assume that will be filled. So all up looks like about 5 or 6 pick without factoring in other trades in or out. Is 5 or 6 about right or too many/too few?

I agree 5 to 6 every year is about right and can go to ten of things are pretty bad and you want a refresh/rebuild. We had 8 last year and I am happy with the players we brought in.

If you go say 6, you need to bring in a couple of players from other clubs, unless it is a deep draft.

I like the idea of Jones, but no way should we be re signing him ahead of Baker, who can contribute in multiple roles, is actually good at the sub role, and appears to do everything right off field.

Scott should be retiring with concussion btw. He's averaging at least 2 a season.

jazzadogs i agree , i agree with all you have said there , as far as if Marra requests a trade or we want to trade him i think the club would probably go with the younger guy in Arty and Scott would go , but all in all nice summary of where our list sits.

I agree that Arty possibly gets another chance, ahead of Baker and Scott, because of his age, positive traits of speed and pressure, and potential to play as a small forward.

However I think Baker (27yo next season) and Scott are better footballers.

I'd be inclined to keep Baker as safe depth, but would understand us choosing to move him on.

I suspect that the 6 you have listed - Poulter, Baker, Arty, Duryea, JJ, Coffield - are certainly the least likely on that list.

Cleary has played himself in to another contract at this stage.
VDM is best 23, will get signed.
Smith is developing ruck and has shown improvement this year, we can't afford to let another one of them leave.
Liam Jones and Libba are likely to get another year each, but I think we are wise to hold off on re-signing them.

Anthony Scott is the other big question mark for me. A good foot soldier when he could get on the park, he is now an injury/concussion prone 30 year old (would be turning 31 prior to the 2026 season). I think he gets delisted too, unless he can demonstrate some value over the remainder of this year.

So 3 rookies (Baker, Poulter, Duryea) and 4 primary list (Coffield, Arty, JJ, Scott). If Jamarra requests a trade that takes us up to 8 changes, and might mean that one of Baker, Arty or Scott get another chance.

Mid-season draft prospect Tom Evans also had a bumper game for the Bendigo Pioneers in round 3 of the Coates Talent League, gathering 44 disposals, seven marks and seven rebound-50s from halfback.

The haul saw Evans record a round-high 205 ranking points.

Evans missed selection in last year’s draft but returned to the Pioneers as a 19-year-old this season.

The AFL mid-season rookie draft will be held on May 28.

I might be whistling a different tune if he turns into a bonafide star in the next year or two, but wouldn't it be good list management to actually let him be out of contract just as Tassie enter the comp? It would give us the flexibility with cap space if we were tight and needed a relief valve(and didn't want to match a crazy big offer), and also put us in a good position draft wise because we know Tassie will have a lot of high end picks to spend. Might be a shallow way to look at it, but in the modern game where contract mean stuff all it would be nice to have options.
