Athletic tall defender that can play just about anywhere from midfield, forward, back or ruck. See him as more a defender as that’s where I think he impacts the most. He has good skills, needs to improve some of his decision making at times. He’s a good mark above his head and can take a contested grab. Has all the attributes to be successful at the next level but seems like he doesn’t want it. Doesn’t impose himself enough, needs to work harder and gives silly free kicks at times. His head just isn’t in it some days.
Would have loved to snare Wingard here, the local boy who has bucket loads of talent. Hoskin-Elliott was seen as the next best player, and should compliment their developing midfield nicely. A potential top line player who fits a need.
45 - Joshua Waldhunter - 183cm 84kgs
A tough inside player with nice skills. Should be able to play from the get go and adds a harder edge to go with his good ball use. Also a local boy, which may appeal. Port do have a lot of needs, but also a lot of developing players across most areas, so happy to go small again with this pick.
51 - Julian Dobosz - 191cm 85kgs
A medium-tall forward who has a good leap. Development player who has a few areas to work on, but kicks goals. I wonder if he may drift out a little in the real thing due to him not knocking down the door with his running in the DC (query injury limiting him there). Should form a good tandem with the tall Butcher.
With the first 3 picks i had specific criteria in mind for the type of players I wanted. They had to possess the following;
* Highly skilled
* Speed
* Attacking flair
The players had to be proven at the elite junior level with a preference for players who could work in the forward half. I was keen on players who had a genuine feel for the game with good attacking instincts. i wanted players with a bit of x factor who could produce something special when you need it or kick a magical goal etc. With 3 picks inside 30 I felt I could get that type of player more so than the hard working tackling machine who can run all day. I wanted to find a group of matchwinners who would come through together and be a force in 4-5 years time.
With the final pick I wanted a tall forward who could fit into a future re-structured forward line. I would have considered a good player who slipped through even if it was another position if it was too good to pass up. But a tall forward the priority.
Plan A and Plan B.
At Pick 8, I wanted the best genuine midfielder available. I had Adams earmarked for that pick so he was Plan A. Kavanagh was my next choice if Adams was gone.
At Pick 12, I wanted Crozier as a small/mid sized forward so he was Plan A. If Crozier was gone I would have taken Newman.
At Pick 30, I wanted Newman also as a small forward/mid. if Newman was gone I would have taken Lockyer the defender which would have meant a change to the overall strategy.
In the end I was able to get the 3 players I wanted with my first 3 picks so it was mission accomplished.
At Pick 47, I initially wanted Fletcher Roberts but wrestled right up until it was time to make the call with the idea of going for Ben Brown the ruckman from Tassie. So they were Plans a & b and it was a tough call. I went for Roberts on the strength of his match winning performance in the TAC GF an event I have often given a lot of weight to.
So who did I pass over that you thought I shouldn't?
Wanting a KPD is just a statement unless you nominate who you would have selected.
I would have gone with the best available KPD at 17 and to me that would have been Frost(Lockyer was also available at 39, he's also one I don't mind). I just think we are desperate for a young quality developing KPD on our list, we don't have any.
If we wait another season it could really come back to bite us as it's possible next year could be Lakes last season and many players never recover from an injury like Morris's.
