Pick #44. Carlton - Tom Curran

Impressed by this kid. He's a great size at 195cms and no doubt he'll add some size to his frame after a few pre-seasons. He's a physical player - hits a contest hard and leads straight. Sticky hands, neat disposal and is a genuine KPF. He's a great option for Carlton at this pick, as they need a strong (and big) presence. Curran, IMO, is the man best fit to deliver them that. He suits their needs more than Dobosz, who reminds me a little of our own Jarrad Grant. Curran is more your power forward.
Good pick and likely to happen if he gets through to them. Spoke to a carlton recruiter at the combine and they are massively keen on this kid.

Ok perhaps someone can re do pick 52 for Melbourne.

Then we can continue on with Richmond at pick 55.

Pick #52 Melbourne - Ben Brown

Ruckman with an immense mark. He gets the ball often, and has surprising speed for someone close to two metres tall. Kicked seven goals in only three matches in the TAC Championship.

Tasmanian boy and nephew of James Manson, sees himself as a Dean Cox type.

Thumping kick with plenty of pace and skills. Performed strongly in the state draft combine and set an impressive time of 2.76 for the 20mtr sprint.
I know most people would want speedy midfielders but I say focus on that next year in the super draft where we have an extra first round pick.
And if he isnt any good, being a Jordan we get to trade him to the tigers for pick 19, win win situation.

Pick #55. Richmond - Marley Williams

Whilst Williams isn't exactly an inside midfielder, which is perhaps what Richmond need, I think he's too good to pass up on. He's got a great turn of speed and often burns opponents off in the first ten or so paces. When you watch him play, you can tell he has a natural talent. He can definitely win his own ball, but he looks great running and receiving. Able to play midfield or forward and create. Oozes class and can make things happen.

Tigers could go for some inside mids with later picks/rookie draft. I don't think they should pass up on a player like Marley if he's still available. I rate him - could see him going a fair bit higher than this.

Pick 56 - GWS - Jackson Coleman (Sandringham Dragons)
                  Height: 195cm Weight: 91kg Age 19
                  Tall forward

Big powerful, athletic tall forward that looks like he’s chosen footy over cricket. Can clunk a really nice contested mark. Skills are good for a big fella and uses it well. He’s generally a pretty good kick for goal. Only really concentrated on footy this year so has that upside. Can also play in the ruck and could maybe be that 2nd ruckman. Kicked quite a few goals in the TAC cup this year.

Why - Adds forward more depth to GWS stocks.

Is this a needs basis thing or just a best available approach. I noticed you picked 3 quick forwards, although you have mentioned you see Markworth as a Hargrave replacement.

                      Interested to hear your summary.

His pace and running appeals to me. He tested at 2.80 for the 20mtrs at the state screenings.
MJP also gave him a tick as well.
I wasn't too worried about positions because a lot of teams change that anyway and I just wanted four mobile types.

                        I'll write up something soon.

A summary of my Western Bulldog selections:

Focus - My major focus was adding pace to the list and ideally I wanted midfielders early on and then a key position player however, some of the midfield guys I rated went before pick 17.

                          1st Pick - #17
Given that Seb Ross and Elliott Kavangh were selected beforehand that left me with a choice between Daniel Markworth, who is not a genuine midfielder, Brandon Ellis and Devon Smith or taking some of the slower guys like McKenzie or Grigg. It really came down to Grigg or Markworth with McKenzie just behind that so I went with the player with the most run.

Markworth tested exceptionally well at the draft combine, he's a smart guy and has excelled in a number of sports. Even though he is a 19yo he is still has plenty of upside. I can see him playing in a number of positions at the senior level so I was quite comfortable with that

                          2nd Pick - #39
I rated Jordan Murdoch and it came down to a selection between him and Clay Smith so I took the chance that Smith would last. The Crows had 2 selections right after this one and Port also had one so I didn't want to take the chance that one of the local teams would have selected him. I think he could develop into a very good footballer.

Murdock possess a long left kick and like Markworth is exceptionally quick. He tested very well at the state screening posting a time of 2.76 for 20mtrs.

                          3rd Pick - #49
I was hoping that Clay Smith would last and thought I was quite lucky that he did. He's capable of playing as an inside or outside midfielder and he makes good decisions with the footy. He is a noted contested ball winner and a real engine room midfielder who tackles strongly and this certainly appealed to me.

The back ups for this selection were Jackson Merrett and Brad Hill.

                          4th Pick - #57
I was chasing another quick player and MJP had mentioned to me a while back that Haiden Schloithe had impressed him. His state screening results were very good and once again he tested well for his speed so regardless that he is technically another forward I thought he could add something to the list. Josh Bootsma was also considered at this pick.

With a strong draft in 2012 and with an extra first round pick I think we can address any midfield issues then.
Acquiring players with pace was my primary focus and I think this has been achieved albeit that we didn't get genuine midfielders with the first 2 picks. I do think the last 2 selections can add something to the list quickly.

Comments or feedback would be appreciated

I love Haiden. I have no doubt if he gets an opportunity he will leave no stone unturned to make it...just a good, old fashioned footballer. Personally, I would call him a midfielder, not a forward...but everyone keeps calling him a forward so maybe that is what he is!

I am going to be offline soon and I have pick 59. My preferred selections are as follows:

1/.Josh Bootsma - running half-back from South Fremantle. Great kick off either side...bit of a latecomer in that 2011 was his first year in the city after living in Albany for the past 5 or 6 years. Son of former Docker mature age recruit/South Fremantle captain Brad.
2/.James Batterham - good size, good kick either side...utility/mid from West Perth.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.
