Best Fish and Chips in Melbourne

Thought Ill a start a thread about the best fish and chips in Melbourne.

For people on WOOF familiar with the area Jungle Jim Fish and Chips in Vermont South on the corner of Burwood Highway and Hanover Road which is our local was the best fish and chips place once until new owners took over now its not very good. Hook, Line and Sinker Fish and Chips in Glen Waverley on Kingsway is where we go now and sometimes Captain's Choice Fish and Chips in Brentford Square in Vermont is another place we go to as well.

Kensington Fish Place is the best in my local area - it used to be mentioned in the Lonely Planet as one of the best in Melbourne.

It is certainly not Hickory House on Monash St in Sunshine which has stood unchanged since the 70's. Actually I dont think they have changed their oil since the 70's either! I must admit though I do enjoy their hamburger with the lot. Just dont do the F&C as they are very greasy.

Love this thread -- the best places to eat in Melbourne cannot be found in the Age Good Food or Cheat Eats guides, which tend to be written by and for a very narrow yuppie/hipster subsection of society. The best places are all local, very uncool joints surviving on word of mouth and kept secret by loyal patrons who don't want to be crowded out by pretentious hipsters discovering the latest thing. I've always found these places through discussions like these or tiny uncool food blogs. Tried a couple of the suggestions above, and they were pretty good (7-8 out of 10 range).

I'll keep my top 2, very local, very uncool places secret for now (we call the guy who runs one of them 'the professor' as he is so careful about how he handles his fish and he looks like he's working in a lab with his white coat and spectacles), but a third one that is out of town is the joint in Airey's Inlet (I think there's only one there). I haven't been there in a couple of years, but everytime I've been down there over the last 15 years or so the fish has been been melt in your mouth fresh and creamy.

Looking for a recommendation for the inner north if anyone has one. Our local changed hands recently and it's crap now

If we are leaving Melbourne best F&C I have ever had would have to be on the jetty at Batemans Bay. Bloody delicious.

Agree the Greeks make the best fish and chips.

My favourite for Fish and Chips is Napier Fish and Chippery (Napier St, Strathmore) they truly cook it to perfection - there's definitely no standing room in the shop on a Friday evening.

That's what happened to Jungle Jim's in Vermont South. When the Greeks owned it it was top 10 in the best fish and chips in Melbourne then it was taken over by the Asians and it has gone downhill.

One of the issues with all the F&C shops is they don't make their own potatoe cakes, battered fish etc any more. Most of them now get all this pre done from a distributor so they all taste the same ie terrible.

Back in the old days (sound like an oldman hey I am), each shop did their own battering, and it was fresher. My uncle had a F&C shop in Barkley st between Argle st and Blandford st and in 1961 my father ran it for just over a year while the uncle travelled. I ended up going to the primary school around the corner doing part of prep and year 1. It was a great F&C shop and had a sit down area with booths and was always packed out, especially Friday night with bodgies and widgies . I was only 5 years old but remember being there vividly.

The greatest memory was walking along Barkley st every second week with my home knitted footy jumper to watch the doggies. (not a bad year 1961)

Unfortunately when the uncle came back from overseas his heart wasn't in it and he ran it into the ground. I think there is a dry cleaning shop there these days.

(and no my family aren't Greek, they are Cypriot Turks)

Nothing like fish and chips on a Friday night.
