Not too many highlights at all from this season. It was a shocker. I'm hopeful 2013 is a much improved year and we are far more competitive because our 2nd halves the last 11 weeks are unacceptable.

Top Of The Bay, Williamstown will always be one of my favorites, the calamari is superb, and nothing better than walking across the road and camping down on the grass looking over the bay feeding the gulls, who will gently take chippies from your hand!
The one thing I miss about Melbourne is the Flake, up in the north state it taste like crap and they don't know how to batter things. I remember my Friday night special flake from the local in Broady, inch by inch and 10 inches long. Great stuff.

Potato cakes, I almost forgot they call them potato scollop's in QLD and I remember a mate who had moved from QLD to Melb. asked for a couple of scollop's and nearly threw up on the seafood concoction.

They are not like they use to be as none of the Fish & Chip shops make their own flake batters or potatoe cakes. There is a distribution company that mass produces them and delivers to each shop, including pre cut chips.

Sacrilege! Gone are the good old days. It's been 30 years since I left.

The Melton is the old fashioned one, I watch the man soaking the fish and potatoes in the batter and the old lady put it in the oil. Nothing like the good old days.

I feel your pain, miss my Flake, I have yet to find a decent fish and chip shop up north, there is one on the beach at Bribie Island, but I think I fed the local ibis most of the batter, the potato in the Scallops (cakes) was wafer thin and batter a few cms thick, the fish was similar, the view outstanding though and the photos made up for the so called feed.

Found a half decent shop in Ipswich near the Queens Park, but whilst the fish was quite nice, you could only get crumbed, so it actually almost tasted like a schnitzel.

They don't quite do fish n chips up in Brissy like they do in Melbourne, well, from my experiences anyway.

Re: Best Fish and Chips in Melbourne

My wife is a fish & chip addict & since moving to North Melbourne 5 years ago we've had fish & chips once a week. Our local is the fish & chip shop in Haines St North Melbourne. They make great fish & chips & are owned by Greeks so we feel lucky to have such quality so close to home.
Last Sunday we went to pick up our order like we have for the last 5 years only to find out that Sunday was their last day. They are leasing out their business to (you guessed it) an Asian family. Nothing against people from that part of the world but lets be honest, they can't do quality fish & chips. My wife was nearly in tears at the news. We'll give these new owners a few tries but I haven't got my hopes up.

When I was a Pup my Dad would drive to us to Baccus Marsh on the odd Sunday and have Fish and Chips at the corner store.
Don't know of it just from the memories but I still don't think I have had Fish and Chips as good as those ones.
Later on in life my brother and I would trek up and grab some.
My brother called in a couple of weeks ago and said they had changed hands and are not as good.

I am there every Tuesday night sitting in my car waiting for my daughter to finish cheerleading, never tried them though.

Something a little bit different is a place called Hooked at 172 Chapel St Prahran. The chips are hand cut and the fish is very good, but you do pay for it.

For years always went out of my way to go to the Fish n Chips shop in the Kensington strip of shops near the train station. Their Special Flake still is as good as I'd ever had. Since moving work, haven't been for a number of years now so not sure if they still stand up.
