Re: Game of Thrones
Watched via Amazon Prime. It was dark, but I didn't see it as a big issue - it was what I expected with the battle being at night. I'm assuming what I saw was marginally better than how it came up on Foxtel as it was commented on a lot on twitter afterwards.Comment

Re: Game of Thrones
I only have the basic Foxtel (for sports), and I know if I go to On Demand to watch a replay, the quality is extremely poor. Foxtel is really a disgrace.FFC: Established 1883

Re: Game of Thrones
House Glover owes the Starks now. If Lord Glover doesn't join this fight Jon would be forgiven for taking Rhaegal and burning Deepwood Motte to the ground.
House Tully still stands as well. Edmure and the Starks are family, and with the Frey's gone, Edmure would be Lord of Riverrun again.
Yara will rally as many Ironborn as she can.
There may be some other Southern houses that will rally against Cersei once they know that she betrayed the Starks.
Could Daario bring an army of volunteers from Meereen, ready to fight for the Breaker of Chains?
As soon as Bran said 'You're a good man. Thank you', you knew exactly what was coming.
No more running, no more Reek, no more hiding. He stood and fought. He knew he wouldn't win but he fought anyway.
Jorah. Just, Jorah. Kept getting back on his feet. Lived long enough to look into the eyes of the woman he loved one last time.
Little Lyanna Mormont. My god, has there ever been a more bad-ass 12 year old girl in TV history? The curse is dead.Comment

Re: Game of Thrones
I couldn't help but utter 'Hold the Door', watching him stand as he was.
There are some great videos of people watching the latter stages of the battle, specifically Arya jumping on TNK. As she plunges the dagger, the crowds in the bar lose their collective minds.
Think 'The stadium holds its breath', the fantasy TV version.Comment

BOG by a mile last night. It took about a quarter for her to get involved but her impact when the game was there to be won was superb.
She did go missing a bit during the Premiership quarter (under the blood rule) but when she came back on in the last, she turned the game on its head, and quite possibly the season.
Definite favourite for the Rising Star at this stage.
I feel like I've said enough negative things about the current state of the show so I didn't be the one to say this.
I thought last night's episode was suitably epic but much of the storytelling left a lot to be desired.
However, I was happy with the way the Arya storyline played out, and I thought the Theon arc was given the appropriate result: he dies bravely on his feet defending his home and family."It's over. It's all over."Comment

Re: Game of Thrones
Same as in Wars of the Roses; Marguerite of Anjou, Cecily Neville, Margaret Beaufort, Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret of Burgundy, Anne Neville, and Elizabeth of York were all either the mother of English kings, the wives of English kings and the mother of Prince of Wales' or the sisters of English kings and they were major bad arses.
BTW;
The success of the HBO show Game of Thrones, based on George R. R. Martin’s series of novels by the same title, has renewed interest in the English Wars of the Roses. Martin loosely based the political tangle at the heart of Game of Thrones on the bloody struggle in the mid-fifteenth century between factions of the Plantagenet family for control of the English throne.

Of course characters and events will take some inspiration from history just like it will take inspiration from fiction. That’s how most stories work. It’s clearly not ‘just the War of the Roses’ though and I’m sure one could point to other medieval civil wars of succession and say ‘see, it’s just that’ just as easily and they would probably have a fair number of similarities as well.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]Comment

Re: Game of Thrones
At risk of sounding like a killjoy that episode was epic, but nowhere near as good as I thought it could be.
For the first time in GOT history it felt like a superhero film, ie. Everyone had too much plot armour, and all the deaths were too heroic.
I think it was apparent from early on that we weren't going to lose the real important characters: Jon, Dany, Arya, Sansa, Bran, and that the good guys would manage to win this war. Which is fine, and still suspenseful and epic and all that.
My issue was the rest of it was a missed opportunity to really feel like there were high stakes for every other character. The producers completely wussed out, they killed 6 characters, and almost all of them irrelevant. The guy from the nights watch that no one actually knows the name of, fire sword guy from that slightly uninteresting side plot, the cute tough girl, red woman who has been missing for ages and had already been cast aside mentally by most, Jorah the stalker and Theon who has never really been integral to any major plotlines. And they all with exception of the nights watch guy got to either go out on their own terms or do the classic "I'm mortally wounded but refuse to give up until I take down as much of the enemy as possible with me".
This was made more annoying by the amount of times main characters were overrun by whites who we know are brutal and hard to kill and after 30 seconds squirming underneath 20 of them that characters favourite sidekick comes in and saves them. I think Brienne "died" about 3 times, Sam was stuffed 3 times, Red beard was stuffed twice, Jorah somehow didn't die with the rest of the Dothraki. It kind of loses it's impact seeing your favourites dissapear under a mass of ruthless enemies when it's already happened 3 times and no one even got hurt. Also there were some terrible battle tactics all round, especially with a complete underuse of the dragons.
For mine it would have been a much better episode if they stuck to what makes GOT different; the brutally real rules and events it has always fully committed to which has prevented this feeling like another superhero franchise. I think that by showing that they didn't want to kill anyone significant right from the start of the episode it really hurt the stakes of the whole thing, it never really felt like we were going to lose someone we cared about, except for maybe right at the end. I think the writers needed to sit down and assume everyone was going to die, and only save those that were important for the final three episodes. And then, they needed to really kill some people early, and i mean true GOT style where they don't even get to fight back. Think about the Red Wedding, or the Mountain in that trial fight. Something where it's so sudden and brutal you sit there going "Geeezus". They could've just instantly killed that nightwatchman guy, or Greyworm, or Lyanna, or Red beard, or Podroig. Really make you fearful from the start and set the tone that this is going to the the most brutal thing you've ever seen.
Instead it never really felt like the stakes were that high for me personally, because i wasn't going to lose anyone without atleast an extended fight scene where they get to prove their worth in their dying moments. And one of those last scenes where it panned around to show all the main characters fighting in the courtyard with literally zero non-main characters in sight could have been a very dully coloured Marvel film.
Don't get me wrong it was epic, and awesome, and very hard to see, and the Arya bit was very cool, as was the beginning of the battle especially with the literal wave of whites, and to its complete credit for such a long battle it didn't particularly feel tired at any point which is impressive. I just thought it felt at times more like a Marvel film, which is not why i watch GOT, and lacked the sheer grittiness and brutality of the Battle of the Bastards or other GOT episodes where a sudden, brutal and final death is always lurking round the corner.I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

Re: Game of Thrones
Meh, who cares, I loved episode 3 and every other ep in the 8 seasons.
It's been great entertainment and I don't try and analyse too much. Yes there are lots of things that don't make sense like, How did Arya get out of the room when surrounded by walkers and started making her way towards Bran.
