    Not a big crowd, but I guess people worried about the weather.

      Perhaps Kerry O'Keeffe is right about many supporters losing their passion for Test cricket unless it's against the likes of India or England. Troubling signs for test cricket lovers.

        I hope it isn't the case, but he may be right.

          Warner should have been out for 2, but straight forward catch dropped in slips.

            50 runs without loss but the hard work might be starting now with the opening bowlers likely return to the attack soon.

              I truly think conferences are the answer. Have SA, India, AUS, NZ, Eng to start.

              They are the only teams we should be playing regularly.
              Pakistan, sadly no one cares. I've found it hard and I love test cricket.

              Not sure how it looks, but something needs to change so we Eng, SA, India more often.

                Once again a wicket late in proceedings takes a little bit of the shine off what was a good session for Australia, Hopefully the weather is kind to us for the balance of the day.

                Awful shot selection by Warner. Tried to drive a wide one off the spinner and it went to first slip. Bat was very wide away from the pads.

                    Smiths dismissal just takes the edge off the Australians performance today and Travis Head is getting worked over a bit.

                      3 for 187 at stumps on day 1. Head lucky to survive with a catch being dropped in the last over of the day.

                        Re: Australia v Pakistan Tests Summer 23/24

                        During the play cancelled for poor light and rain during the afternoon, a discussion on the future of test cricket broke out where I was sitting. Factors discussed were
                        IPL influence on test selections
                        virtual disappearance of Sheffield Shield
                        Sheffield Shield v County Cricket;
                        promotion of Big Bash at the expense of Sheffield Shield
                        reluctance of southern hemisphere nations to engage in Test Series during their domestic seasons;
                        poor behaviour of England this year and Indian supporters lack of respect for the opposition;
                        need to restore West Indies as a force;
                        coaching of Test teams;
                        organisation of test series among minnows (Ireland, Afghanistan etc)

                        I suppose we could have discussed Melbourne's weather.

                            Thanks D Mitchell

                            What was the consensus of the discussion between Shield and County cricket?
                            The discussion about Southern Hemisphere countries reluctance to play play each other I assume before early Jan might have been a good one.

                              County Cricket has maintained its importance as a nursery for test cricket whilst Shield has been relegated by being squeezed in between Big Bash and Footy so declining as a nursery. Did Khawaja and/or Labuschagne come up through Sheffield Shield ?

                              The decline in numbers of Tests between Aus, NZ and Sth Africa where the preference is for northern hemisphere nations where at least one participant gets to play off season. Overall IPL seen as the source of many problems.

                                Once you have the conferences you can pretty much forget about ever playing against the likes of Sri Lanka, the Windies and Pakistan and I think that would be a real shame.

                                I see why you'd do it but those nations need sufficient coin coming to their players for playing test cricket and you won't get it unless they get a lick against the bigger teams.

                                The whole opening test at the Gabba or Perth thing should only be against the test teams that really can give us a run on those decks. An opener at a more benign/ true Adelaide could be considered for those who struggle to acclimatise to length/ bounce. More tour matches on bouncing wickets should be accommodated but that can only be done with a less crowded schedule.

                                Big Bash cricket is just tripe to me. I haven't watched a game in years, but I'm not the demographic it's chasing. I fear though its popularity will die out relatively quickly and we'll be left with no cricket that anyone wants to watch over summer.
                                TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.
