I'll grant him number 1, much the way most do Bradman as just acknowledgement for his aura.

But for those Aussie Fast bowlers who I've seen in my lifetime, it's McGrath and Bruce Reid ahead of Cummins.

McGrath's growth as a bowler from his debut in 93 to his arrival in the seminal West Indies tour in 95 was phenomenal. He had McDermott go down before the series really got under way and led the attack superbly, and came of age from that point on. I've just never seen a fast bowler so in command of his control and tactics as McGrath.

I also given bonus rating points to guys who can run through sides with big 7 for and 8 fors. McGrath had two of each. The fact he did it most often with other potent bowlers at the other end in Warne, Hughes, Gillespie, Kasprowicz, Reiffel all vying to take wickets from him adds more weight.

Reid, is just a could've been story, and I'm happy to get shot down, given the brevity of his best at the top level. But in amidst the periods where he would break down, he was really starting to stake a claim for being one of the premier fast bowlers in the world. Had he have stayed fit, I think he would've ended up rating very highly indeed as one of the all time greats.
Good summation of McGrath, and in his first few outings and a lot like a Brett Lee he benefited from a genuine shit gets wickets vibe (well, that's how I remember it - probably because of his haircut).

One could argue that pressure at the other end made it easier for him to just keep hitting a line and length to get results. But he had to keep hitting the line and length and his seem position was immaculate all the time no matter what variation he tried. I wonder how he'd go in the this day and age with scrambled seem bowling trends and his moderate pace......
    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

Lillie has to be up there with the best of all time.

He took over 5 wickets per test (355 in 70) while McGrath was just under that (563 in 124)

Lillie also missed a lot of test cricket due to the WSC etc.

His actual best bowling at test level was against a World XI that toured as a replacement for the cancellation of a tour by South Africa (apartheid). Lillie managed 8/29 in the as the World XI was dismissed at the WACA for 59. He took 12 for the match but that series does not count in his test statistics.

On the morning of December 11, 1971, a 22-year-old Dennis Lillee wrecked the star-studded Rest of the World batting to capture eight for 29. Arunabha Sengupta recounts the incredible session which ended with nine wickets to the fast bowler, including the scalp of Farokh Engineer twice.

I remember seeing that match. The thing that stood out about Lillee was that he started as a terrifying quick bowler and then with some injuries adjusted his bowling to add more swing and seam but over the years he didn't have that deadly yorker that many great bowlers did. I don't think he cleaned up the tail-enders like he probably should have.
Ian Chappell could rile him up and get the most out of him. Great bowler no doubt and he would be up in the top 10 of all time.

We have to accept these sorts of collapses with Andrew McDonald coached sides. Great for T20 and ODI but he won't insist on players putting some value on their wickets at the end or start of sessions or just before a new ball is due etc at the test level.

Marnus chased a wide one down leg side but the one that got Travis Head was a ripper.

Our batsman typically don't think and play more on instincts and their style. They don't tighten up early in the innings etc.

Even Smith couldn't bat out the last over. It's uncanny how many wickets have fallen in the last over of a session, the first over after a break or just before a new ball is due.
