Yep. Funny thing is on paper, I'd still back England. Pound for pound better on paper, we've just outplayed them thoroughly, and for us very enjoyably!

Just saw an interesting stat. During England's golden period (2005-2013), Australia has still won more Test matches- 12 vs 11.

The first real period without a genuinely dominant side in a long while. South Africa are the side to beat but don't have the aura or talent of the last Aussie or Windies era. Will be interesting to see where they go from here, Graham Smith may be remembered as their Alan Border mentality changer.

            Excellent.

It shows how willing British media are prepared to pump them up, versus how readily our media is willing to put us down.

You'd never know it from the way it's reported.

August 2011 to August 2012. Since then its been South Africa.

We were number one from May 2001 to August 2009. (74 months) Prior to that we were number one from December 1995 to 2001 in all bar 7 months with SA taking over three times in short spells, ie 5 months, 1 month and 1 month.

The longest streak since 1952 was the WI with 89 months from March 1981 to July 1988

                  Re: Australia vs England

So is their golden period really as far back as 2005? A year where they won only 5 out of 13 test?

In 2006 we smashed them in the Ashes and they won 5 out of 14 tests.

                  2007 was 3/11.

I would say their golden period started in 2009/10. No idea how we can claim it being their golden period when we were ranked #1 for 50% of that period. And their golden period stopped at the end of 2012. Were not convincing against us in the England Ashes series.

                        Is it really that hard?

They've won the Ashes 4 out of the last 6 series going back to 2005, where as previously they hadn't won them for 16 years. As mediocre as it has been, 2005-2013 is the golden era of English Ashes cricket. Every commentator in England is referring to this series as the end of the golden era.

Career defining innings here from George Bailey.

                            And gone next ball!

I am a massive believer in keeping a test side together, especially when it's a player who is a leader but Bailey doesn't look up to it.

Hey BAD, who took over #1 from the Windies in July 1988 and for how long? I can only think it must have been the Pakis, as India was rubbish, England were so-so and the Saffers were still in exile. Surely the Windies took over the #1 mantle not long after and would have kept it for another 7 odd years to 1995.

Just another whack at Watson. With the team struggling and Watson off too a reasonable start he failed to survive the last over before lunch. That's 3 times he has gone out in the last 2 overs of a session.

I'm clearly not seeing the value in him what so many others do. Smart bowler but a batsman with no sense of the importance of seeing through a session.
