    Re: Socceroos Thread

What do we think of our chances for the final stage of World Cup qualifying? We drew the highest ranked opponent from every pot bar one! Japan is always tough but if we can play our home games in Australia we should fancy our chances of finishing top 2.

Not a bad draw. We should get a top 2 finish. But it won't be easy so we'll have to fight for it. Hope we're up for it. The Saudi's will be our challenger for the 2nd spot. Vietnam, Oman and China SHOULD be automatic. But, yeah, we sure do like to make it tough for ourselves. Japan will get top. Really, really don't want to finish 3rd and have to play the dreaded qualifier.

Yeah, we did it the hard way through Honduras last time, wouldn't want to try that again.

Yeah and even then, it was Cahill who saved our butts against Syria to get to Honduras. We don't really have star power like that anymore. First game against China will be an important one to get off on the right foot. They're no slouches anymore with the Super League.

To make a bad night even worse. The Socceroos lose 0-2 to Japan. This means they now have to take the long path to qualify for the world cup. That is, they need to beat the third best team on the other side of the draw in Asia (currently UAE) and the the fifth best team in South America (currently Peru).

Aint happening I'm afraid. The talent isn't there. Getting an aging Fornaroli in reeked of desperation.

                100% agree.

The games are not home and away fixtures as in the past. They are both one off games played in Doha. It looks like UAE v Socceroos 7th June. The the winner of that Vs 5th placed CONMEBOL on the 13th/14th June.

Will be tough now for us to get to the World Cup. Never say never.

How on earth is Doha a neutral venue against the UAE? Any chance we can play in New Zealand, it's equally as neutral.

At least we will be in good company after Italy was knocked out of qualifying by North Macedonia. The reigning Euro champs to miss a second consecutive world cup.

Nice win this morning v UAE, an absolute bullet from Hrustic saw us through after they quickly equalized after Irvine's goal.

Things get tougher again v Peru on Tuesday morning.

I'm lucky (in a way) that I'm working from home due to being under covid house arrest and could get away with flicking the TV on at 4am. Going to be tougher next Tuesday prior to returning to the office.

As a Melbourne Heart supporter Redmayne was the least likely player I've ever seen to save a penalty. For him to be the guy we turn to, and then deliver, in as big a shoot-out as that is incredible.
I should leave it alone but you're not right
