I know, I'm joking about their position because only WCE would agree to something like that based on their trading last year

This could still end up like Dunkley though. We knocked back an offer we considered insufficient (like Melbourne say they will do if it's not 3 first round picks) and ended up with unders for an out of contract player. If Melbourne hold out for three first round picks the same thing could happen.

Spot on. Take what you can get while you can is where it’ll land. He’s not worth 3 first round picks either….
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Do you relly think our list managment wanted both Dunkley and Smith;s contracts to run down , what on earth do you do to players that refuse to re- sign , im sure they did everything they could to get thoes guys to put pen to paper but they refused , you cant say our list guys are dumb because these guys contracts expired , you can lead a horse to water but you cant make them drink , these guys simply had better offers in front of them and they wanted to leave ,some might say match the offers , sure but do we want to sell the farm for 1 or 2 players , we have to be reailstic here we gave it our best shot it didnt work , move on .

I think after we were burned by Dunkley, we should have traded out Smith 12 months before his contract ended. There were rumours at the time that he was happy to be traded, but the club didn't want to. I do think that we were naive at best, incompetent at worst, to let those deals end.

I am sure that we would have received a better offer than pick 17 for a contracted player (even leaving aside the ACL injury).

I think our best players should never be allowed to run down their contracts. Extend as much as possible, and if they refuse to extend (and have history like Dunkley/Smith had of looking at other options!) then trade them before their contract is up.

If Marra refuses to extend his contract by the end of this year, then I think we should consider trading him because of the very high risk that he requests a trade the following year as an uncontracted player.

I generally agree, but even if there is a reasonable chance of the player leaving maybe its worth the risk to keep him on the extra year and hope you can convince them to sign another contract.

We trade a contracted Smith, first we get the Stringer scenario where once you start doing that his value drops, then he gets shitty, and he either goes for pick 10ish or stays another year and then definitely bails.

Or, you don't shop him, risk the extra year, and while it may cost you 10 places in draft it does give you a 50% of retaining a player that would cost you much more to obtain from another club.

Not sure if that makes sense, but basically:
-trade him early, get pick 10 but one less year of Bailey and need to replace him
-hold him, get another year out of him (acl stuffed this but still), then either get pick 20 and have to replace him OR get to keep him for however long?

Interesting rumours regarding Luke Jackson. Possibility of a return to Victoria, back to the demons on the cards - makes the Kosi Pickett deal easier I guess although I have no idea how Freo also get Gulden

                Assume you mean Warner?

Think Warner will go to WC if anywhere.

Do you think it's more of a smokscreen to counter Freo's interest in Kossie?

Reports suggest it's more to do with Jackson's partner having significant business interests on the East Coast

So a bit more like Lobb's request to move to Melbourne.
There will be plenty of interest in him if that happens.

If and i doubt it will but if it does happen , Freo will want the earth for him , Melbourne or whoever bids for him should be ready for at least 3, 1st rounders , his good very good indeed but not a superstar , well not yet .

So Melbourne will push for a Kozzie Pickett straight swap? Their price for him was 3 first rounders.

More evidence for 'get rid of people who don't want to be there while they are contracted'.

It's almost as if Green might have known Jackson was eager to return to Melbourne when he made the three first rounders claim.
