What an amazing bit of storytelling and marketing that a player of Silvangi's capability created a bidding war between three clubs. A five year, massive deal for a journeyman. Kudos to them.
If a club is willing to offer Silvagni 5 years at 900k a season, good luck to him. It's great money.

Carlton losing Silvagni and likely getting band 1 compo for him means they will probably be more generous in their dealings with us for Buku. Pretty good result for us.

Silvagni is an excellent defender but he's not the big dog who can take of the gorillas. Tylar Young fits that brief more closely - granted he has far less exposed form.

We should throw serious money and an extended length of tenure at Wilkie. I hope we are engaging with his management on the quiet.

So did Collingwood to be fair. Craig McCrae clearly a dud date.

agree. While Silvagni is alright when not injured, he’s not our answer. Would rather Ridley (as a player) if going down thst 3rd defender, but I agree, we need a big bodied FULL BACK.

I will never see #16 the same!!

Did we get worked though? We put in a fair and reasonable offer and didn’t up the ante. Think we played this well.

Would of been a good get but not necessarily a key requirement. Good thing though is that the Saints are paying overs on a whole raft of players. They will need to deal with salary cap issues in the short to medium term. As we know you can’t build success on half a team

Saints are certainly going all in the next 2 years to try and keep NWM happy. If they don't challenge they'll fall into purgatory.

But putting up those kind of numbers for SOS who's ok but no world beater is brave after doing somewhat similar with TDK. They're also wanting to bring in Aleer so it's strange to me they've targeted 2 defenders in an area that they're not particularly weak in. SOS would have had much clearer game time with us given our weakness in that area but it's clear the money is talking! And so is Dad!
They're actually horrible in defence and a lack of key defenders is the problem. They've been rolling out an undersized Wilkie and Caminiti most of the season. Howard is cooked. They have the flying Viking but he's not ready to help them yet.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Jack is also undersized. I get it but that's a decent amount of cap in an area that they're not desperate for.

Glad we didn’t budge and sacrifice any more salary cap on him .
Saints are doing a Nth Melb of the 70s , loaded up and going all in to get a flag .
I think Silvagni is a good honest player who gives his all and bar injury will give the saints good service .

Media reports of Carlton offering Buks 4 x $600k pa.
The guy has to go and secure his future if that deal is correct.

St Kilda a destination club now?
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I'm all for overpaying for the right players.

Silvagni is a good player but not the right player in this instance.

Time is ticking for Power though...

There will be enormous pressure on the saints next season. There'll be nowhere to hide for the new recruits.

It's hard not to admire them for having a crack. What's the alternative for them? We've nailed drafting and have been lucky with F&S. And of course getting Bont. So as a small vic club we've avoided their problems.

Take all that away and as a small vic club you don't have many options than to overpay to bring in some talent. Of course, overpaying doesn't normally work out. One way or another It'll be an interesting case study in the future for sure.

This is the thing. Silvagni is an overpay and isn't worth that coin. But would it have been better than nothing? I bet we do nothing now or get someone who plays vfl all year.

And a crazy term as well. On his exposed form he shouldn't be getting more than a two year deal anywhere.

Good luck to him. Carlton's first pick this year is 34, and they have Harry Dean as a likely father son in the first round so might be able to work a points trade or get future picks involved?
