And more than some and equal to others. Meh.

For him to play again this year the Crom have to lose their first final and then make the Grand Final. Odds are against him.

So the official statement said compelling medical reasons influenced the suspension.

              What could that possibly be?

My best guess from reading a couple of articles is that the crows have submitted a report from a doctor or doctors detailing adverse mental health effects for Rankine if he has no chance play again this year.

I could be wrong but that's my feel.

I think they might've argued PTSD trigger from being knocked out, concussed, stretchered off in the showdown last year. Houston 'allegedly' referenced it on field. I imagine (just guessing here) that medico/lawyers could argue that being triggered by a derogatory reference to a traumatic experience can temporarily impede judgement.

It is certainly established that head injuries can have long lasting effects-as the AFL well knows. Verbalising it to someone in either a threatening or demeaning manner can trigger a highly emotional response, a panic, flashback or a survival response that is largely a blood rush and temperature and adrenalin surge. There are plenty of studies that show the vascular changes in the body when someone is truly triggered, (not in a petty frustration as it is often misused) some people even faint. They may have argued that this impeded Rankine's capacity to fully control his behaviour and behave rationally.
Houston's bump was brutal. I remember it well. Its a clever argument if thats what they've gone with. However there's plenty other slurs to choose from that aren't in the vilification category.
If that is the compelling medical argument the AFL will want to amend that technicality asap. There are CBT therapies available for regulating physical and mental behaviour when a PTSD response is activated.

I don't agree with it. 5 weeks from precedence, 6 if they were genuine about compounding penalties.

From the start they should have been doing something like two week suspensions, mandatory training and ten week suspended sentences.

Arguing ADHD/Tourette's/PTSD as a reason for it is absolute nonsense - it really irritates me when people use these type of diagnoses as excuses for poor behaviour. (I think the Tourette's comment in this thread was a joke - if he has a legitimate Tourette's diagnosis that is different).

Shock horror. Star player gets a lighter suspension than a no name player off broadway.

And worth mentioning not all people with Tourettes have tics that involve yelling slurs. Some do, I believe, but if that's the case here you'd assume people would be made aware.

Crows star Izak Rankine banned for four matches for using homophobic slur

Adelaide’s submission to the AFL about the crushing impact of potentially missing a grand final on Izak Rankine’s mental health and his previous medical issues played a key role in the league reducing its five-week “provisional” suspension to a four-week ban.

But chief executive Andrew Dillon has denied the league has double standards after Adelaide’s “compelling medical submission” played the key role in reducing his Tuesday night penalty.

Dillon refused to detail Rankine’s “compelling” medical issues for privacy reasons but strongly defended the AFL’s almost week-long process to reach a determination.

Rankine will still need a finals miracle to play again this season after the Crows accepted his four-week ban for his homophobic slur on a Collingwood opponent last Saturday night.

The evidence which helped reduce the ban is understood to be from medical professionals who detailed Rankine’s shattered state and potential fallout as well as some of the potential reasons why he acted out last Saturday night.

The Crows’ club doctor provided not only that testimony but backed it up with medical records detailing Rankine’s journey since being drafted by Gold Coast.

The club also believed him being knocked out last year took a significant toll that could have impacted his outburst.

Adelaide is adamant it did not play the mental health card with Rankine but strongly believed there were mitigating circumstances for his conduct, as much as they did not condone his outburst.

While Crows also referenced Rankine being triggered by comments from Collingwood defender Dan Houston, the medical submissions played the key role in securing him a small sliver of light that his season is not over.

It is understood the Crows have a quiet confidence that Josh Rachele will be his finals replacement as he builds fitness after a knee capsule issue.

When asked if the reduced penalty had anything to do with the fact that Rankine would miss his first finals series, Dillon said: “No, a game is a game.

“...the language used was offensive, hurtful and highly inappropriate,” he said.

“Importantly this incident was called out by the players and ultimately acknowledged by Izak himself as wrong

“One incident is one too many, the fact there have been multiple incidents over the last 18 months shows there is still much work to do

“Players get taunted, players get provoked but when the line is crossed, there must be accountability and in this particular instance Izak is paying a significant price.”

The penalty was one week less than Sydney’s Riak Andrew, given a five-week ban for an identical offence, but the same as the penalty handed to West Coast’s Jack Graham after he self-reported his slur.

“We look at all the circumstances around each of those incidents and they are in a range, the important thing is … one incident is one too many, I don’t want to be in a position where we are comparing these going forward,” Dillon said.

He defended the league’s slow process, and assured footy fans it could not have been expedited any faster.

“This has significant ramifications for the player and the club and the competition,” he said of the timeline.

“We were advised by Adelaide on Sunday night; the investigations and interviews were Monday leading into Tuesday; the determination was made late Tuesday and Adelaide and Rankine were then given the ability to make submission on that provisional determination.

“We received them late (on Wednesday night), we considered them today (on Thursday) and we made the determination (Thursday) afternoon.”

Adelaide chief executive Tim Silvers said the Crows would not appeal the sanction.

“From our end what was said by Izak, his words and his actions were unacceptable,” he said.

“They don’t align with his values, they don’t align with our values. We worked with the AFL over the last few days to work through what is an appropriate sanction.

“Four weeks is what they have deemed as appropriate, we accept that. We won’t be appealing. We will move on.”

When asked about the Crows’ “compelling medical submissions” that formed part of their submission, Silvers “it was not appropriate” to discuss it.

“There were medical submissions that were part of an extensive submission that we put to the AFL,” he said.

Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall says he has been left “as confused as I’ve ever been” by the AFL’s decision.

“I don’t know how compelling medical evidence gets you from 5 weeks down to four and if we are talking about mental health .. (on) what metric measurement scale are we saying that equates to one week?” Dunstall said Fox Footy.

“We are not getting all the information. We are just expected to take this at blind faith and say ‘they’ve made the right decision’.

“We can’t do that because it doesn’t make sense without all the relevant facts to understand why they decided to give him a week off to give him hope perhaps to play in a grand final.

“How can you sit there and say medical (evidence) equaled one week.”

If its true-as Mitch Cleary has reported that Rankine said the same thing to another Collingwood player a couple of years ago then I hope Adelaide go out in straight sets.
