In my day (yeah I get it)……..you did whatever you could verbally and physically to maim players within the rules of the day. With the latter it was less of an issue due to the lack of athleticism in the game and the level I was playing.

At the level I played the players today are insanely more athletic, going up the levels to AFL and it’s just too dangerous. Players genuinely need to have the duty of care. Sheil knew exactly what he was doing and if he denies it he’s a dinosaur.

I wouldn't put money on it.
It should stand but the AFL can be creative with Star players when they're reported.

If only he threatened to physically assault another player on multiple occasions like Willie Rioli did, he would have avoided any penalty whatsoever

            According to Ralphy:

Adelaide is bracing for a suspension of between 3-5 weeks for the Rankine homophobic slur. The Crows contacted the AFL integrity team on Sunday. The club does not hold out much or any hope that Rankine will dodge a finals-impacting penalty.

I'd bet on 3-4. Enough that if Adelaide made it to the GF he'd be able to play, just barely in line with 'precedent'

Bad 24 hours for the Crows - missing out on NWM and likely losing their most talented player for the entire finals series.

Will somehow get wrangled down to 2, or a fine.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over a player being racist, sexist or homophobic on the field getting punished accordingly by the League as I share the values where those parameters have emerged from. I will say though, that the game has a real problem with its judiciary and scaling or perception of what is dangerous, harmful, unacceptable, or needing to be managed.

Maybe it isn't a problem and the lack of perspective, or scaling or fairness is deliberate and allows for massaging things and/or creating uproar to feed the news cycle.

It is always about optics for the AFEL and nothing more, it is never about consistency of values and ethics. Clarko escaped punishment completely for his homophobic remark against Jimmy Webster in pre-season last year and then the AFEL went whack on players transgressing in 2024, but have now scaled back on punishments in 2025. But then they spend millions on GF entertainment this year for an artist that has a long history of homophobic lyrics - don't bother trying to make it make sense.

If the AFEL didn't have double-standards, they'd have no standards at all. On that metric, they are akin to that reviled and disgusting group of criminals known as the political class.

I was starting to think that they had applied the "Star discount" and backed down and set a smaller sentence- 5 is absolutely fair given the precedent set in other cases.

Heard Eddy this morning. The AFL integrity unit operates separately to the Tribunal/MRO. They have laid out the penalty, but they allow Adelaide/Rankine to appeal before releasing it to the public. Somehow, Eddy knows the penalty and really should have said nothing.
