So is every list manager supposed to be embarrassed when the player doesn’t choose them? It’s not like he did anything further in the public than literally saying that we are interested in the player, and that they hadn’t heard from the player.

Every year there are several players in the market - some stay at their clubs, some leave and other teams miss out - like Shiel not choosing Carlton and St.Kilda, Lynch not going to Hawthorn or Collingwood - and Gaff not going to North. I don’t think its cause for embarrassment. I also don’t think the club is doomed because we didn’t extract Hurley from Essendon, or Wingard in this instance.

I'm as flat as a tack. How the hell did we pull off the Tom Boyd trade? The only way to change our perception of the club is to make and win finals.

They declared interest just as many clubs have over players in trade periods .
We picked up two players in the draft last season at 9 and 16 who will play good footy for a long period

None of that makes sense. We won the flag in 2016. Brett Goodes works for the club, they haven't won a final since 2015. It's deeper than that. Maybe we need to accept it.

I think Sam acted perfectly. He was asked a question that was doing the rounds and confirmed we had interest but nothing more than that. My understanding is that the player was genuinely interested in coming to us but in the end went elsewhere.
I can't blame the club for expressing interest, it needed to happen

Just on your second point - I know Hawthorn in recent times have had big name indigenous players - but wasn’t it a criticism of the Hawks until the mid-to-late 90s that they’d never had indigenous players at the club?

Calm down people. If we get some runs on the board with our performances next year players will come.

Go to the draft, get a gun and see who pops up next year.

We can pretend this is chill all we want, but for the third straight year our club has told us that we're in the box seat for a gun player, only to watch him end up somewhere else. This is bitterly disappointing and frustrating, and the club needs to ditch its ham-fisted approach to negotiation and public relations if it ever wants to be taken seriously.

Everyone knew we were interested - if you deny it publically, you just look like a dickhead.

I love trade week. Everyone is a bloody expert on what picks are worth, what players are worth - and what the club should say and do at every corner.

Had we gone quiet and said nothing eveyone would now be blaming the club for their low key position.
We ponied up a sizeable offer and let the player know that we were interested. In the end Wingard went in anther direction
I don't think we could have played it much better other than pulling out on Tuesday when the player and his manager were apparently wanting to hear another offer.

Considering we almost never make a play for a big name player, the fact that even when we throw everything at the one big name they still choose someone else is embarrassing. Trade period is a pretty humiliating time to be a Bulldog supporter every year.

I'm sure we'll pick up a cast off no one else is interested in and declare we're happy with how trade period went

Wingard, Hurley - and who’s the third one?

                              Statement from Port http://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/new...t-chad-wingard

Port Adelaide General Manager - Football, Chris Davies said “As we’ve mentioned from the beginning of the trade period, the only way that the Port Adelaide Football Club would consider a trade for Chad Wingard, is if Chad requested to explore his options at another club.”

“Chad has now informed us of his want to explore the opportunity that Hawthorn have presented him. However, he is also aware that unless an acceptable trade can be struck, that he will be playing for Port Adelaide in 2019.”

Davies added “Unless Port Adelaide is suitably compensated, a trade will not happen.”
Confirmation from Port of Wingard's desire to go to Hawthorn.
