    Re: Draft Machinations

So if you believe the HS, we are perhaps a chance to trade pick 7

Western Bulldogs are considering making the first live trade under the AFL’s new rules and swapping their No.7 selection for a pair of first-round picks.

The Dogs are confident they can secure Vic Metro midfield star Bailey Smith with a pick in between No.7-11 and want to then draft a second player before matching a bid for father-son onballer Rhylee West.

Non-Victorian clubs are set to pass on Smith but the Bulldogs must snap him up before Geelong enters the draft at No.12.

Smith and 202cm swingman Ben King toured the Dogs’ Whitten Oval facilities on Tuesday.

This would indicate Ports picks 10 and 15 are in play and maybe we have someone else on the radar early

I'm not sure we should take the risk but if we do it does open up some scenario's with picks and players.

It would lessen the chance of getting Bailey Smith but probably not ruling it out completely. He might have scared off the interstate clubs but GWS are just likely to say stuff it and pick him. It would certainly rule a line through the possibility of getting Connor Rozee.
I think it would also substantially lessen the chance of Jye Caldwell and Ben King unless the draft gods are smiling on us.

At pick 15 perhaps we have Jordan Clark, Zac Butters, Ned McHenry, Liam Stocker, Riley Collier-Dawkins or Xavier Duursma on the shopping list.

I love the look of Bailey Smith but also like the prospects of trading pick 7 for 10 and 15 with Port or 8 and 13/16 with Crows. The draft goes deep so to get to live picks before we pick up Rhylee is a great outcome.

I'm torn ... Bailey at 7 or two picks in the top 20

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out but for some reason I think if Caldwell is available at pick 7 there is an outside chance we might just take him ahead of Smith but we shouldn't.

Boy its some big risk. I guess as long as the club are prepared for missing out on Smith and being comfortable with alternative outcomes.
I think this is a vital draft for us, I'm not sure I'd want to risk losing out on a top flight talent in either Caldwell or Smith.

If you had to pick which would you choose?

Twomey has Adelaide bidding for Blakey, Thomas, Quaynor, Briggs and Kelly and all of them going before West. Would mean our 27 and 31 becoming 32 and 36? before the bid for West.

It's close, very close. This time 12 months ago I was pushing the Richards barrow but also very high on Naughton and in the end we got both and they both had great first year seasons for us.
That sort of scenario is very unlikely to happen this year unless a very generous trade heads our way but failing that I do have a slight leaning towards Smith over Caldwell if he has passed our fitness tests.
Smith is a fantastic player who's commitment to becoming the best footballer he can would be a great thing for our club and an attractive quality for any player heading to the Kennel given the distractions we've endured in the last two years. I'd be equally delighted if it was Smiths name that was called out and for what it's worth the same if it was Ben King.

I hope all the players we select have that 'leaving no stone unturned' sort of attitude to becoming the best footballers they could be.
It's one of the reasons why I also rate the likes of O'Halloran and McHenry so highly as well.

Caldwell has that more explosive style about him and will take the game on a bit more than other elite players in this years elite group.

I hope we're not trying to be too clever.

At the moment I feel like we're one of the teams with a golden ticket to the chocolate factory - we'll be able to bank one of those consensus top 8 footballers and get a really good kid in.

I don't particularly mind if it's a Smith, Caldwell or King, I just don't want to miss out because we overplay our hand.

Its exciting, we have all been after another inside/outside mid to add to our stocks and I think Smith/Caldwell are just that. Agree Caldwell looks to have that little more X Factor via his burst while Smith does a lot of things right and I like his aggression too. Hamstrings scare me a little so its Smith by a nose.

I'm actually really bullish on Buku think he will become a very good player down the track, he is made for the modern game with his marking and kicking a real weapon. By the end of this week I think we will be adding at least 3 best 22 players of the future.

I can only assume it would be a deal with Port who might be interested in jumping in front of Adelaide and GWS for Hately?

That would mean we would get one of Caldwell or Smith at the very least.

I can't see us passing up on Rozee if he slipped so Hately is the next S.A. kid in line. Is he worth Port giving up two first round picks for though?

                            I agree.

Hasn’t turned out well for Melbourne giving up Josh Kelly for Salem and Tyson.

It's risky no doubt if that is what we are considering.

                                From the afl website

Greater Western Sydney, with picks No.9 and 11, is another team well positioned to trade up and has been linked with the Western Bulldogs' pick No.7.
But then says it’s unlikely anything will happen during the first day of the draft.
