    Re: Draft Machinations

I tend to agree RT. Getting two first round selections within six or seven picks of each other seem more like a risk mitigation strategy, in a strong draft.

If things dropped away badly according to the pundits after pick 7-10 I'd be hanging onto seven for dear life, but that doesn't seem to be the case this year.
    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

      Re: Draft Machinations

It's interesting, for most of the past three months, the general consensus has been that the top 4-5 are all around #1 in most years and the top 7-8 was a clear level above the rest with 8-20 being fairly even. As we've gotten into the last week or so, it seems people are basically having a clear top 4 and then a blanket over the next 20 players.

Chris Doerre's final, full phantom draft

        8. Western Bulldogs
        Bailey Smith (VIC)
        Height, Weight: 185cm, 82kg
Summary Profile: Arguably the best and most complete midfielder in the draft. Smith is not only a high production midfielder but also offers the best combination of contested ball-winning, reliable kicking and acceleration of this year's midfielders.

        27. Western Bulldogs *matching West Coast's bid
Rhylee West (VIC - Western Bulldogs father-son)
        Height, Weight: 180cm, 80kg
Summary Profile: Ball-winning midfielder with production on the board. Son of Scott, Rhylee starred for Vic Metro during the Under-18 Championships.

        37. Western Bulldogs
        Fraser Turner (TAS)
        Height, Weight: 186cm, 75kg
Summary Profile: Outside accumulator who runs all day. A sound decision maker with clean skills who was a consistent performer for the Allies during the Under-18 Championships.

        47. Western Bulldogs
        Will Hayes (VIC)
        Height, Weight: 181cm, 79kg
Summary Profile: Hard running 23-year-old VFL player who is suited to playing wing or half-back. Has the strength to win his own ball and has clean skills.

        49. Western Bulldogs *matching Geelong's bid
Buku Khamis (Western Bulldogs - Next Generation Academy)
        Height, Weight: 190cm, 81kg
Summary Profile: Springy defender who reads the ball in flight effectively and intercepts across half-back. Khamis is a very reliable kick, maintaining an 81 percent kicking efficiency in the TAC Cup.

Smith with our first. Great result.
West at 27 (matched). Great result.
Khamis at 49 (matched). Great result.
Will Hayes. Does he know something?
Adelaide making four bids on academy and FSs. I'd almost buy a three game membership to them as a thank you if they force the hands of those clubs so early.

Who knows if the reports are anywhere near accurate, but it sounds like if we are happy with Smith we should be trading down and taking him with another player in the teens.

Draft anticipation is doing everyone heads in. We'd need to have few things going our way for us to trade down the order and still getting what we want or take the risk on missing out on the highly rated Smith/Caldwell. A lot is depending on what GC is doing this evening and if Rozee is slipping through to 7/8.

More interestingly, what about the guys down the order? Fraser Tuner and Will Hayes (his hard work at VFL level may now be rewarded). Would there anyone else linked to us around those picks?

              Jacob Koschitzke at 41
              Boyd Woodcock at 46
              Bailey Williams at 52?

Bailey Williams jumped out at me. I'd be more inclined to draft a young KPF/2nd ruck type like him (we've cut so many) in the 40's and then look at rookie listing Hayes should he get that far.

Will Hayes is the only selection that I'm not particularly keen on out of that group.

Yeah good VFL player, not quite an AFL player.

Yep. To me he's a rookie list option. If there's talent on the board when that discussion might arise, I'd take a Williams or Stack over Hayes. We've got three rookie list picks this year, so I think if we must have him then identify either pick 6, 24 or 42 in the rookie draft.

I have been on Woodcock since the SANFL finals. He was brilliant. Williams would certainly fill a need and would be a steal at 52, but could go anywhere from 25 on.

My ultimate (optimistic without being too fantastical) updated draft would be:
Trade 7 for 8/9/10 + a pick in the teens
                            Caldwell/Smith
                            Hately/Clark/Butters/RCD/Jones/Hill/McHenry
                            27 West
                            32 O’Hallaran/McHenry/Woodcock
                            45 Woodcock/Williams/Blanck/Koschitzke
                            63 Khamis
*Webb somehow still gets moved to Rookie list

I would not be surprised if Bailey Williams is the draft bolter. I just can't see how a guy who moves that well at that size wouldn't have a club very keen.

I'd love him, think he's a really exciting prospect as a key forward.

At the start of the season he would have been a top 10 to 15 pick. I suspect he could go early 2nd round.
