Also hate to say it but we do need to consider the possibility that Freo or West Coast table a monster offer to Naughton and we need some depth in that area.
Aaron grew up around Frankston until he was 9, before his family moved to WA. Wider family in Victoria still. He was on record before the draft as strongly not wanting WA teams to draft him. He’s spent well more than 1/2 his life in Victoria already and will be for years with us. I’m not losing sleep. When he’s near contract renewal we should still be contending. All good.

Further to that...he is NOT from ‘Perth’. I guess the Freo base is only 30 minutes from his teenage stomping ground (and where his brother still runs around for the local team) but West Coast hq is an hour from there. I know, I know - an hour drive beats a 5 hour plane ride but the return home factor is almost non existent for country kids and pretty low for those on the outer suburban fringe...

Which (by the way) is why Gold Coast are making a mess of the first 2 picks in the draft.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

So GC should select country kids or kids from QLD/NT with their top picks vs metro kids?

They are picking two ‘best friends’ from metro Vic on the basis that ‘because they are so close they will want to stay’. I just think that is flawed. Life gets complicated as you get older...and people more used to coping with the idea of distance/travel from a young age (and people who have families who are also used to those ideas) will be more likely to stick it out in adverse circumstances than those who aren’t.

Everyone says that ‘they’ are different...let’s see how different they are after a couple of years of losing and some big money offers to return home.

I'm not sure the challenge for Gold Coast is much more than what Brisbane has faced, maybe it is, but at this moment it's about stopping the quick turnaround of players wanting to head home

GC don't necessarily need both Rowell and Anderson to be one club players but the short term focus is just to get them to sign 2nd deals like Ben King has.
If they can get the SA boys from the 2018 draft Jack Lukosius, Izak Rankine and Jez McLennan to follow King's lead that will be a significant step for them.
They have already re-signed Will Powell and Charlie Ballard from 2017 and Brayden Fiorini seems to be a good player for them

If they can get a group of players to recommit and keep identifying good local talent they have a decent chance to follow Brisbane's lead

I agree that the club just needs to be competitive if they are to maintain the players

Does any have an opinion of the type of player we should ideally draft?

Midfielder, key position forward or defender or small forward etc?

If it's for pick 13 I'll go best available so positional play doesn't matter.
As for our later pick I would like some speed and as it won't be elite at that pick very good disposal by foot.
People asking for a small forward we have Ben Cavarra and at this stage Rhylee West also maybe Fergus Greene.

I get that but the question was more about what type of player we ideally need if you were looking to balance the playing list of the side?

With that I would prefer some outside run. A Eagleton type player to give JJ some support. Someone to deliver into our forward line with skill to make the most of our forward setup.
Being in a state that is starved of footy news I can't tell you what player will be around our pick that fills that criteria but that is the type of player I would be looking at.

I like the thought of drafting something we don't have & have entertained the idea of drafting Gould. I have had a read of some of your reservations GVGjr & i share those sentiments. But if he can overcome these challenges & become a player then he adds something to our squad we don't have. i picture one of the Scott brothers with pace & kicking skills & the thought of that is tantalising in my own mind.
I've posted before my slight worry after our exit from the finals, of us possibly needing some more aggressive players. By the sounds of it though Gould sounds more of a end of first round pick.

That's the challenge for the team that selects Gould. We used to draft skinny kids and hope we could build them up, with Gould it's about him dropping a few kg's and seeing if the club that selects him could improve his endurance and mobility.
                        It can be done though

He reads the play well and has loves playing football so I think most environments will back themselves to get improvement out of him

My only other concern is that he is another defender but probably not a key position defender We are flush for those types even when we project forward a couple of years although perhaps we don't have ones that read the play as well as him

He is tempting but we might have other needs

Like you, I'd prefer a genuine midfielder or maybe someone who can play forward and in the midfield. Mind you I wouldn't say no to a key position player but a midfielder would be the priority

I would love a player who is elusive and quick who knows his way around the forward half. He doesn't have to be a prolific ball winner but must have hurt factor with his possessions and regular score involvements.

How does the likes of Williams and Bergmen fit that criteria Doc? Weightman in that mix as well?

Liam Henry would be perfect. I love the way he plays. Pity he is tied to Freo.

                                1. Cody Weightman. Small forward. Would be a very welcome addition, some on here have heard Melbourne may reach at Pick 8 for him.

                                2. Miles Bergman. Wing/half forward. Could be a good athletic pairing on the wings to Hunter going ahead, maybe more damaging around goal.

                                3. Fischer McAsey. KPD. Bulldogs supporter. Already 197cm could grow to 200cm and give us a big lock down defender for the ever growing tall forwards. Apparently he plays more bash and crash, and has great hands. Could allow Le Young to play more intercept and perhaps take over the athletic intercept player from Wood eventually. If Trengove rucks, or likely retires in around two more years, our KPD stocks are just Keath (then 30) Le Young (then 23) & Cordy (then 25). So bringing in a KPD with the long game in mind (then 21 when JT retires) might be a good move.

Next year we are likely taking two mids (Stevens & MacPherson), defender (Raak) & forward (Jamarra). These will take all our decent picks next year. This will secure long term our back, mid and forward groups generally. Weightman, Bergman & McAsey would be welcome additions for different reasons.
