Heard that he did an ankle last week and that it was likely to dissuade list managers from picking him up in the mid-season draft.
But it was only supposed to keep him out for a fortnight and with the bye coming up that's really only a week and Pickett is out for 8-10 weeks and Richmond still picked him. It must have been something else, maybe he's been out keeping Daisy Thomas company?
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.
A few weeks after the mid season draft and there isn't much so far to suggest it's adding value to the teams
I don't quite get why we have reinstated the mid season draft, in most cases you can't bring in a player that has done the required work to make an impact. I think allowing teams to have an extra player on the list would be sufficient
Does anyone think it adds value?

Not particularly. And if Gardner has done his ACL, it's going to be a disappointing and expensive exercise for us.
I'm not sure the league needs it. If there must be anything, a simple SSP spot, post draft, for a Cat B rookie spot only would be more than enough to achieve pretty much the same thing. Even still, I'm not sure this is going to make a big difference to anyone.

I was against it from the start. The rookie list has been bastardized, it was meant to be supplementary list and a back up for injuries, whilst giving young players a chance to prove themselves for a future upgrade.

How can you bring in a player who hasn't trained with you all season and expect them to play? Sure you might be able to promote someone from your own state league team but even then most of them aren't full time athletes
Just let teams carry and extra player on the list and the jobs done

Small sample size, too early to tell.
There will be a scenario where a team, due to injuries, is in desperate need for a ruckman or a key back and we'll see a good example of it being used. I'm not 'for' or 'against' it - but I would be against it being thrown in the bin after 1 year.

While I agree it won't be shelved any time soon, I can't see how it adds value.
How do you think a ruckman for example could come in without training with the midfielders throughout the preseason and then all the way through to the half way mark of the season and make an impact? Remember most of the guys in the state league aren't full time footballers and we think mid season we can turn them into one?
Surely it would be better to draft an extra ruckman in November and have him with you until needed?

I liked the mid-season draft purely because it made a random Wednesday night more interesting, but this is what will stop players from ever effectively contributing from day one if picked up mid-season. The fitness gap as well as the difference in game speed is far too great to allow anyone to slot in seamlessly.

Not if your someone who is really driven they would train full on all Year round anyway.
An example would be maybe blokes like Micheal Barlow they know what it takes and want the dream.
And if you were looking to pick someone up you might give them a word up and have them at the club before they are picked up.
A VFL club would be the best place to get them no doubt as they are at an AFL club already and being coached by AFL knowledged coaches.
Personally if it’s to fill up on an injured players for 6 months it probably should be previous AFL players.
They should be dropped off the list at the end of year stopping teams picking 18 year olds and “cheating” the system
It seems to be a pre-curser to a mid-year trade period, it's less about the draft and more about softening up the AFL public to losing/gaining players mid season.
